To have heightened anxiety even after just a few glasses of prosecco?

isthisnormalatall · 02/02/2026 11:15

I don't drink very much these days, however yesterday had a few glasses of prosecco and I'm feeling terribly anxious today. I have heard of hangxiety but is this possible even just after a few glasses??

For reference, I am 38 so not sure if that matters!

How many glasses is “a few”?

I definitely found my alcohol tolerance became worse after I turned 35

Onewildandpreciouslife · 02/02/2026 11:17

Yes, alcohol causes anxiety to spike, and the fact you don’t usually drink will make the effect more obvious

4 glasses I think!

Genuinely contemplating going tee total as it's just not worth it!

From the start of perimenopause for me, a single glass of wine means I wake up the next day with an impending feeling of doom. I don't drink at all any more and am much happier for it.

Overtheatlantic · 02/02/2026 11:20

4 glasses is roughly a bottle so I’m not surprised you are feeling anxious today.

Well that is true actually! I honestly might just give up drinking altogether!

I think this might be the way to go, just read "The unexpected joy of being sober" and found it really interesting and thought-provoking. Not that I ever drank to those levels but sometimes it's hard to have less than a few glasses!

I found that my response to different alcohol types has changed over time/ per menopause.

Lager now makes be feel dreadful but I have found ‘clear liquids’ better - Prosecco and gin and tonics. I don’t drink much else now when I do drink.

Youdontseehow · 02/02/2026 11:27

Yes because alcohol causes a rise in cortisol, the stress hormone. It also has an exciting effect on the nervous system which lasts longer than the “calming” effect of the alcohol. You don’t need to be blind drunk for this to happen.

UnhappyHobbit · 02/02/2026 11:29

Yes and I experienced something very similar yesterday. It took me all day to feel normal again and I felt very low.

Same. Wake up in the night feeling gripped with anxiety.

I read alcohol explained by William Porter. It explains the mechanics of what it does to your body and hormones and it all makes total sense. I barely drink now, it is quite easy as the impact is so immediate (thanks perimenopause)

RazedBeds · 02/02/2026 11:31

Prosecco is especially bad for this. It's famous for terrible hangovers.

Stick to champagne and cremant.

I find clear spirits and champagne are just about the only thing I can drink now.

CloakedInGucci · 02/02/2026 11:32

I quit alcohol when I was 32 because even a small glass of wine (and I really do mean small, I would take 4 days to drink a bottle) made me just feel on edge and a bit blurgh. Not horrendous, but bad enough.
Four glasses of Prosecco would make me feel awful.

6 glasses for a bottle of prosecco

You just need more practice @isthisnormalatall

im 42 since about 38, wine (I’ve only ever drunk wine and lots of it) gives me anxiety, acid reflux, dull skin, waking in the night, heart palpitations and it’s definitely not worth it. I only have a glass when eating out now.

isthisnormalatall · 02/02/2026 11:38

Thank you all so much. So apparently it's not just me then! It's odd because when I was younger, I was just really hungry and a bit fuzzy-headed. Shame as I do enjoy a drink here and then but might just have to give it up. I seem to be very bad at just having one or two and always end up having more (though I often don't drink for weeks on end)

DoubleShotEspressox · 02/02/2026 11:41

Prosecco is notorious for this and it was always something that I could previously smash back and not have any issues aside from craving a sandwich the next day.

I can maybe tolerate vodka in the right circumstances but if I’m due on, a little bit tired, if I drink my anxiety is off the charts for days.

I just don’t bother anymore. It’s basically a poison anyway and clearly as I edge towards peri it’s getting worse.

So no, you’re definitely not alone!!

insomniacalways · 02/02/2026 11:42

Yep I hit 45 and that was it went from being able to drink a bottle of wine with no issue. To one glass, making me unable to sleep , have acid reflux and waking the next day feeling like death and so anxious. It was literally overnight. I can now manage one glass with food but most of the time it's not worth it.

It depends on the size of the glass.

  • A standard size wine bottle is 750ml.
  • A small glass of wine is 125ml. If you use this as a pour size, you’ll get 6 glasses of wine from a bottle.
  • A medium glass of wine is 175ml. That means you’ll get just over 4 glasses of wine from a bottle (or 4.29, to be precise!)
  • A large glass of wine is 250ml. In which case, you’ll get 3 glasses of wine from a bottle.125ml, 175ml and 250ml are the usual serving sizes for a glass of wine in a bar or restaurant.

I don’t understand that at all to be honest. It’s not difficult to have one glass of wine and then move on to alcohol free. I do it a lot when I’m out.

On the other hand, if only I could have only one piece of chocolate and then stop.

So I suppose we all have a weak spot! But now you know that it’s making you feel awful the next day, focus on that and work out a strategy, either to stick at one or shift to none, whatever you think will work best.

Haha, yes that's true about the weak spot! No problem for me to just have one piece of chocolate! Though it's probably better to eat more chocolate than drink wine, if that makes sense!

Yes I get this now (mid 30s) and for some reason wine/prosecco is the worst. It started when I started to drink less, so I don’t really bother anymore

Why, can you not just have 1 or 2?
