To have heightened anxiety even after just a few glasses of prosecco?

I don't drink very much these days, however yesterday had a few glasses of prosecco and I'm feeling terribly anxious today. I have heard of hangxiety but is this possible even just after a few glasses??

Why, can you not just have 1 or 2?

I find that really hard for some reason. No problem to not drink at all, but once I got the taste for it I want a few more (never to the point of total excess or anything like this)

It depends on the size of the glass.

  • A standard size wine bottle is 750ml.
  • A small glass of wine is 125ml. If you use this as a pour size, you’ll get 6 glasses of wine from a bottle.
  • A medium glass of wine is 175ml. That means you’ll get just over 4 glasses of wine from a bottle (or 4.29, to be precise!)
  • A large glass of wine is 250ml. In which case, you’ll get 3 glasses of wine from a bottle.125ml, 175ml and 250ml are the usual serving sizes for a glass of wine in a bar or restaurant.

Prosecco glasses.

6 prosecco glasses out of a bottle.

If I have a few glasses of wine I wake up at 5am hating myself...

StylishAndBeautiful · 02/02/2026 12:13

@IwishIcouldconfess , OP didn't specify that the prosecco was drunk out of a prosecco glass.

I agree - I find it much easier to have none, than one! I don't know why, maybe my willpower is rubbish 🤣.

I have transformed my drinking over the last few years. Not that I was ridiculous, but it was becoming habitual rather than an enjoyable once in a blue moon treat. The anxiety was through the roof!

I found the try dry app very helpful, along with following the sober girl society on Instagram.

There's so many alternatives now, it's helpful.

Mind you, I'm currently pregnant so I'm in enforced sobriety 🤣 it hasn't been a challenge though!

Haha. To end the glass discussion, they were indeed drunk out of prosecco glasses!

In fairness looking back now I probably did have the best part of the full bottle so no wonder I'm feeling rubbish..

For me it’s quite dependent on who I’m hanging out with, what I drank, how much I ate. It’s about the impact on cortisol really - maybe rather than giving up drinking try switching to low sugar alternatives like tequila & soda for a while and see if that makes a difference. Also if you were speaking with new people/people you perceive as judgemental, that might have had an impact too.

What else would you drink it out of?

Thanks for the clarification. The reason I pointed it out is because a 'glass' at home is probably larger.

Oh good gracious no!

AIBU To have heightened anxiety even after just a few drops of prosecco in a glass that wasn't a prosecco glass?

Why not? A glass is a glass and it’s not as though it’s fine wine - it’s just Prosecco

But isn't the glass designed to keep the bubbles longer?

StylishAndBeautiful · 02/02/2026 13:23

A G&T in the wrong glass just isn't right.

StylishAndBeautiful · 02/02/2026 13:24

But isn't the glass designed to keep the bubbles longer? In theory, but it's probably a marketing ploy.

Springersrock · 02/02/2026 13:27

As I’ve got older, especially since menopause, I find even the smallest amount of alcohol affects me badly.

I had 1 glass of wine on Friday night (friend’s birthday and I fancied it) - I couldn’t sleep (and when I did finally drop off it was that not properly asleep sleep), I felt jittery, anxious, tired and like utter shite all day Saturday.

First alcohol I’ve had since a work Christmas party the beginning of December (where admittedly I did go a bit mad) that took about 3 days to get over.

LookingThroughGlass · 02/02/2026 13:27

It's a biological reaction. The alcohol is a depressant so dulls the feelings of anxiety, and when it wears off it anxiety feels heightened because it had been suppressed. That's the basic cause, but you can add to the mix a psychological reaction because when we drink we lose inhibitions so there is a risk of behaving in out-of-character ways which then cause embarrassment in hindsight. As we age, our bodies become less resilient so the alcohol toxins have a more rapid and worse effect - it doesn't get any better.

The only way to stop it is to limit or stop drinking alcohol.

I have the most beautiful crystal champagne glass for fizz - 50p at charity shop but its beautiful

A nice glass makes all the difference

No idea - I have to admit it’s never stayed in the glass long enough to lose the bubbles!

haha same here if truth be told - but I feel so ladylike with my nice glass

Skybunnee · 02/02/2026 13:38

if I have a glass or two of wine or other alcohol at 5-6pm, when I wake up at 2-3am , which I always do, my first feeling is panic. So I try to remind myself not to drink

isthisnormalatall · 02/02/2026 13:39

I must admit that I'd feel quite odd not drinking in social situations with quite a lot of my friends groups. Anyone got any tips on that? When you meet friends who like a drink?
