To have heightened anxiety even after just a few glasses of prosecco?

I don't drink very much these days, however yesterday had a few glasses of prosecco and I'm feeling terribly anxious today. I have heard of hangxiety but is this possible even just after a few glasses??

if I have a glass or two of wine or other alcohol at 5-6pm, when I wake up at 2-3am , which I always do, my first feeling is panic. So I try to remind myself not to drink

Oh gosh yes, similar here!! Why do we feel so panicked!

I find my anxiety after drinking is worse these days. The last time I had a few drinks on an empty stomach I felt terrified for hours the next day. It scared me so much I will stick to 2 drinks tops now, and only after a meal.

I must admit that I'd feel quite odd not drinking in social situations with quite a lot of my friends groups. Anyone got any tips on that? When you meet friends who like a drink?

Alternate lime and soda with wine, or have wine and lemonde

Or even better, tonic water, but call it a large G&T

I totally agree, I absolutely cannot have a drink before having eaten a good full meal!

Same!

I had 3 of those mini bottles of Prosecco just before Christmas and that sealed it for me. I was awake for hours in the night with heartburn and anxiety, and it ruined the first day of a mini break the next day. It just wasn’t worth it and like you I’m not a big drinker. I have never drank at home, so it was only really meeting with friends once a month or so where I’d have a few drinks.

I haven’t drank anything since that night in December, it’s just not worth that awful feeling for me. There are plenty of alcohol free drinks out there now that taste really nice!

HollyGolightly4 · 02/02/2026 13:45

@isthisnormalatall being upfront about it- I'm not drinking today, so alcohol free for me and not tying myself in knots giving reasons!

You might find that some people want to get on board with you- it prompted some interesting conversations with my friends.

There was one friend who definitely cancelled on me if I said it in advance, or would mysteriously be only be able to stay for one if we were out, but I chalked that up to their problem. We're not as close as we were, but tbh I think they would sometimes drink to a problematic extent and would encourage me to do the same. (And as mentioned up thread, my willpower is negligible 🤣)

I've been doing this all my drinking life.

I've asked for my G&T to be served in a straight glass when it's been served in something resembling a goldfish bowl.

Myoldbear · 02/02/2026 13:48

I think 'a few' is key here.

For me anyway, one or maybe two, is actually good and heightens a social situation.

Any more makes me tired and not join in, and makes me anxious in the night, and sluggish the next morning.

ChapmanFarm · 02/02/2026 13:54

@isthisnormalatall I'm so glad to see your post.

I don't normally drink prosecco but did at the weekend and I felt I had really anxious half sleep.

I was glad to get up and feel better.

I'm not an anxious person and although drink can disturb deep sleep, I don't normally feel like this.

I was wondering if it's a thing and up pops your thread.

4 glasses is roughly a bottle so I’m not surprised you are feeling anxious today.

Depends how big the glasses are. 125ml so would only be 2/3 of a bottle. A proper drink but not a bender.

Weighing in here... I second Alcohol Explained by William Porter. Great book and explains that anxious feeling really well. The Unexpected Joy is also a brilliant book. Quitting altogether is totally doable and there are loads of resources nowadays. Try the Naked Mind (there's also an app, and a book), and loads of non drinkers have pages on insta etc. William Porter's book explains what happens when you quit altogether - how your dopamine levels return to normal, and how you get more joy from life as a result. You just learn to navigate social situations etc. it's like learning to drive. At first it feels a bit new and alien but after a few weeks you don't give it a second thought. (Peri) / Menopause 100% affects alcohol tolerance. Don't be scared to think about quitting. It's not the taboo it was x

Prosecco has a terrible effect on me - it’s not the bubbles as other sparkling wine is fine

It depends on the size of the glass.

  • A standard size wine bottle is 750ml.
  • A small glass of wine is 125ml. If you use this as a pour size, you’ll get 6 glasses of wine from a bottle.
  • A medium glass of wine is 175ml. That means you’ll get just over 4 glasses of wine from a bottle (or 4.29, to be precise!)
  • A large glass of wine is 250ml. In which case, you’ll get 3 glasses of wine from a bottle.125ml, 175ml and 250ml are the usual serving sizes for a glass of wine in a bar or restaurant.

oh dear @StylishAndBeautiful this is rather a fail!!

I’d say it’s safe to say most of us can count. It’s also safe to say that Prosecco is generally served in 125ml glasses … almost never in a 175 wine glass (4=1 bottle) and NEVER in a 250ml glass (except on hen dos maybe!!)

StylishAndBeautiful · 03/02/2026 21:32

@TawnyVowel , your post is rather a fail as far as I'm concerned.

OP only mentioned 'a few glasses' and prosecco is a wine. She has since clarified that it was served in a prosecco glass, but when I posted she hadn't.

It's safe to say that OP stated the size of glass over 24 hours ago and has posted that she had drunk most of the bottle.

Edited

It’s a bit like asking if you drink your G&T from a pint glass….

I mean you could, but you don’t … (I’m guessing!)

Createausername1970 · 03/02/2026 21:44

I was having a similar conversation about strong coffee the other day. I don't drink much coffee any more, and I have a jar of decaf at home if I fancy some.

I had 3 cups of coffee over a two hour period in a restaurant on Saturday (I didn't want alcohol) and I felt awful for the rest of the day. I felt like I had drunk a bottle of wine - I had a headache, my hands were shaking and I felt anxious too.

StylishAndBeautiful · 03/02/2026 21:44

I don't but I don't drink it very often. I like it but haven't had one for about a year and a half.
A glass could be topped up without you noticing.

Crikeyalmighty · 03/02/2026 21:45

@isthisnormalatall Prosecco or champagne even gives me the jitters really badly too - no idea why , any brown spirits give me hiccups - hence I stick to red or white wine and Vodka and tonics

Thank you so much for your reply!! All very interesting and I'll look into that William Porter book!
