About the builders

We are using some building contractors currently do build an extension. Job will take some months, we’ve used them before but not in this context - that said they have been mostly great.

There is a skip on our drive. I’ve noticed that they are bringing rubbish from other jobs to put in our skip. It may be that our drive is easier to have a skip than the other properties but I’m not delighted that a. other people’s rubbish is in our skip and b. we look to be paying to “house” other people’s rubbish (yes I suppose others could be being billed for part of it)

yes I am going to speak to them about it but AIBU to be a bit pissed off about this or is it entirely normal. Not sure if I should offer up my pissed off face or not.

In my experience it’s normal. I’ve had skips where I’m having a job by a company of builders and my jobs the biggest and other jobs have been put into mine. I recently had my kitchen tiled floors replaced plus the wall tiles and my old tiles went to a bigger job where the skip was, I believe they were having their bathroom ripped out and an extension.

I guess if you have an issue with it, it’s best to talk to them about it as you say. If I’m honest I’ve employed this company of builders twice and I’m loathed to have a company again. In both instances, my jobs have taken far longer because they’re just not concentrating on my house alone. On both jobs, we’ve had two really good starts but the job loses momentum in the second, third weeks etc. so for me it’s not actually about skip sharing, it’s also builder sharing if you like. I have periods where the jobs have gone far longer than expected because they’ve taken on work elsewhere.

i know it’s not your question but next time I have work done, I shall looking for individuals who will concentrate on my job alone and my skip alone!

Thanks for your response.

we had a pleasant chat and been reassured that we don’t pay for other people’s rubbish per se. Or at least it all evens out. It’s about making sure no skip is overloaded apparently and like you we could benefit further down the line when our job no longer needs its own skip.

I do have concerns like you that stuff could end up taking longer as as the labour is shared around but there’s so many different trades coming and going that it’s unrealistic for all of them to be here all the time. They’d be waiting around for other stuff to get done. The brickies are here almost every day at the moment which is reassuring. But yeah, stressful times!
