Was the shoe shop BU?

Bought startrite shoes for DS (7) at start of September. He wears them four days a week.

Two weeks ago the strap snapped. Rest of the shoe totally fine.

Took them to shoe shop today. He's measuring 11.5 H and they were a 12.5. they've moved him to a 13 and gave me 50% off (so £30 instead of £60).

Were they BU to not refund the shoes and/or do a straight swap for a new pair?

Sounds like they were pretty generous to me, they've had a fair amount of wear already!

mondaytosunday · 31/01/2026 19:57

He’s been wearing them several days a week for six months? I’d say the strap snapping is fair wear and tear and I’m surprised they gave you 50% off!

Auroraloves · 31/01/2026 19:57

I think it’s a 3 month cut off for shoes. If they’d have broken in the first term I would have expected a replacement but it’s nearly 5 months since the start of September so I think what they offered was reasonable

Crunchymum · 31/01/2026 19:59

Unless they have some sort of extended guarantee, then I think you got a good deal to be honest.

KilkennyCats · 31/01/2026 20:00

He’s had five months of wear out of them and needed to go up to the next size anyway!
I’m amazed they indulged you at all.

Agree! I think you’ve had a good deal.

He didn't need to go up..he's an 11.5 and was in a 12.5.

I've no idea why people feel the need to be so aggressive. 'indulged?' no one indulged anyone.

They really did, you know…
Why did you accept a size 13 if he’s not a size 13?

StartWrong · 31/01/2026 20:04

Thanks all. That's what I thought. I googled it just to have a nosy and there was a thread on MN almost exactly the same a few years ago and most said they'd have expected a full refund so I questioned myself.

We always use that shoe shop and trust their judgement.

pizzaHeart · 31/01/2026 20:05

Agree that it’s a good deal. DH once had a problem with shoe sole after a few weeks. It was obvious that he wore shoes just a few times from their look and date of purchase so he was refunded in full. In your case 50% is more than generous.

I really don't want to argue with you, I won't be replying to you on a 'yes they did no they didn't' basis.

It wouldn’t have occurred to me to even raise with the shop. I think the were very generous.

The2ndMrsMaximDeWinter · 31/01/2026 20:06

I've had three kids go through school.and honestly they've always had a fault by January. It's five months of wear and kids aren't known for being good with shoes!

It wouldn't cross my mind to return shoes at this point, they went above and beyond IMO.

itsthetea · 31/01/2026 20:07

Think that’s about fair

SteelMaiden · 31/01/2026 20:07

I'd expect shoes to last longer than 5 months though...?

Because some posters make a hobby out of finding a way to slyly criticise someone’s personality, rather than just answer a question factually. You probably shouldn’t indulge them, OP.

Adidas school shoes.. robust and hard wearing. We gave up with Clark’s and start rite, not the quality they used to be

Trabbling · 31/01/2026 20:10

Why did you buy a pair of size 13 if they're too big for him?

Ratherbeonabeach · 31/01/2026 20:13

Hi Op, I appreciate this isn’t why you posted so please ignore if you’d prefer, but did they say why they have put him in size 13 if he only measures a 11.5?

If he is a H width then he really needs wider shoes for comfort, rather than just getting bigger sizes to try to get the width right. Shoes too long just become a trip hazard and can make kids claw their toes to keep them on.

So if they don’t gave 11.5H I would expect them to fit a 12G. A 12.5F is not ideal and it might be worth looking at ranges that come in the wider fitting - diff shops if necessary.

It’s annoying as my DC is the same, and wider shoes are harder to find, but I remember doing my children shoe fitting training (years ago admittedly!) and they said about the width issue.

Clarks and Next both do wider shoes.

Sorry if not helpful, but thought it might be worth asking them next time.

They aren't slipping, he was v happy walking in them and we had the manager test his ankles with them.

But I will be keeping a very close eye on him in them.

I was lucky if I got much past Christmas with my kids school shoes from September. I think they were generous to give you 50% off.

I think that was my feeling, especially as it's basically four with holidays considered

If they see expected to be faulty every term then I may as well buy from M&S, £180 a year in school shoes is a lot...!

Shoe shop said they tell people to budget for two a year.

You're taking the Michael

BlueRedCat · 31/01/2026 20:20

my view is that there are some children who can wear a pair of shoes far greater than other children. My eldest was like that. She was just so active she could destroy a pair in months and even now she can wear through a pair of trainers in less than a Year. So you might be upset with the shoes lasting only 5 months but your child is wearing them in an above average way. I never thought to go back to a shop when inevitably her shoes failed. Occasionally I would resort to duct tape to eeek out a bit more wear and then pay full price for another. Don’t have any of these issues with my youngest.
