I had a bra fitting today. The partner was excellent and really knew her stuff.

The fitting was coming to an end. I was trying on the matching knickers.

As I was pulling them off, I heard a man talking to someone in a different cubicle just the other side of my curtain. I felt so vulnerable in that moment - I was only wearing a bra. I'd been having normal volume conversations about my boobs and my body with the partner, believing it to be a single sex space. And there was a gap in the curtain I could see out of, so knew it would be easy enough to see in.

I pulled my clothes on as quick as I could, whilst holding the curtain gap closed to recover them.

Once dressed, I found the man about 1m away. He was there with his wife. Why he couldn't wait by the sofa's and her come to him like it has always been, I don't know.

I spoke to the partner and she was very sympathetic. I asked her if there was a single sex space I could have had the bra fitting in, and she said no. John Lewis don't have them.

The bras are the last items I'm buying from John Lewis brand.

Bye bye Waitrose weekly shop.

I’ve certainly never heard of anyone doing it. What a bizarre thing to do.

I've never done it but now that I think about it I just assumed they would have sample pants with a bit of sticky plastic in the crotch area they replace afterwards if people insist on trying them first. You really can't trust customers to try them on over their own knickers.

If you've got £30 floating around to waste on 2 pairs of knickers that don't fit, then I'm happy for you.

I didn't realise my first post needed to clarify the knickers were tried on over my own pants, as I thought that was a given, but MN is a strange place.

Ever thought about all the BO/dead skin that you leave on tops and dresses you try on? Sweaty Betty leggings that go up the bum crack tried on by thong wearers?

The partner was so helpful in teaching me about how to position my breasts after putting my bra on. The practical demonstration of how to daily adjust your bra after closing the clasp is life changing. There was a huge difference in the bra, and the way my torso looked, pre/post adjustments.

A good bra fitting is worth its weight in gold.

If I buy a 5 pack I still try one of them on.

Don't understand all these posters thinking trying on knickers is outrageous and no one does it. What's the problem?
I'm assuming you wash new underwear before wearing. If you don't then I think that's more odd.

Complain, loudly, every single time.

Men should not be in female underwear departments. I like to wander around choosing and holding my chosen items without the male gaze.

1 I wouldn't spend £15 on a pair of knickers
2 I don't wear any type of leggings
3 its not the skin cells or potential bo (i wouldn't buy anything that smells of bo) its the vaginal secretions that are the problem
I have no problem washing tops or dresses before I wear them (though you can almost always tell which ones have been tried on and I generally avoid buying them) but knickers are completely different hence the different rules about returns and refund.
The fact that you were unable to remove them without removing your own is exactly why you shouldn't try them on even over your own knickers.

I agree that trying on pants over your own pants to check they fit is normal. I don’t see why it’s any less hygenic than trying on tight trousers or a bra. I wash clothes next to my skin before wearing them anyway especially underwear. I thought most people did

Do you not try new trousers, leggings, swimwear on over your own knickers ? That’s not gross, neither is trying on new knickers.

There's a heck of a lot of difference between trying on trousers or leggings over your knickers than just a pair of knickers over them!

Not really. Leggings are pretty snug and cover all the same bits as knickers. How about swimsuits? How do you try those on?

Swimsuits have a plastic strip for protection when trying on. Knickers don’t.

I completely agree with you. Not long ago a man accompanied his wife into the changing rooms in new look. I hated it, felt vulnerable. I got dressed and left without trying on the clothes. I complained to the shop assistant who told me she said it was ok?? Why??
