John Lewis, you should be ashamed of yourselves

I had a bra fitting today. The partner was excellent and really knew her stuff.

The fitting was coming to an end. I was trying on the matching knickers.

As I was pulling them off, I heard a man talking to someone in a different cubicle just the other side of my curtain. I felt so vulnerable in that moment - I was only wearing a bra. I'd been having normal volume conversations about my boobs and my body with the partner, believing it to be a single sex space. And there was a gap in the curtain I could see out of, so knew it would be easy enough to see in.

I pulled my clothes on as quick as I could, whilst holding the curtain gap closed to recover them.

Once dressed, I found the man about 1m away. He was there with his wife. Why he couldn't wait by the sofa's and her come to him like it has always been, I don't know.

I spoke to the partner and she was very sympathetic. I asked her if there was a single sex space I could have had the bra fitting in, and she said no. John Lewis don't have them.

The bras are the last items I'm buying from John Lewis brand.

Bye bye Waitrose weekly shop.

I honestly cannot believe it has come to this.

If you can't cope with someone trying on a pair of pants over their own, I hope you're taking your own bedding with you when you stay somewhere other than home. You don't want to know what happens in hotel beds.

Don't know about you but I look where I'm sleeping and I can usually tell if it's dirty and if it is not I will not stay, or I will ask for clean sheets....

Interestingly just asked my husband if he has even tried underwear on in a shop - never in his nearly 60 years!!! Got me thinking if this is a female thing!

LVhandbagsatdawn · 31/01/2026 19:28

So you weren't trying them on over other underwear or trousers?? Sorry but that's fucking mucky.

Why he couldn't wait by the sofa's and her come to him like it has always been, I don't know.

So you want a woman to parade in her underwear through the public area of the changing rooms so you don't have to have a man in earshot while you're talking about bras?

I think hearing a strange man while only in your underwear is rather less stressful than having to walk around in front of one in it, but you do you.

ThisGutsyQuail · 31/01/2026 19:31

I think you are required to try pants on over your own pants.

How do you get the right size first time if you don’t try them on ?

Agreed, I haven’t needed to try on for ages because I always buy the same packs of passion killers but if I had to change brands for some reason, I’d try them on.

Dunno, just do. Never got it wrong.

CantThinkofaNam · 31/01/2026 19:40

Given they allow bloody shitty dogs in there, I am not surprised. I would much rather encounter a man in the changing room, than a dirty dog among everything

FieldInWhichFucksAreGrownIsBarren · 31/01/2026 19:43

Serencwtch · 31/01/2026 18:47

She 'accidentally' pulled them off with the ones she was trying on 🤔

This is the thing I find the weirdest tbh, how did she get them all the way off without realising?
Cannot think of anything more uncomfortable than stood in a shop changing room behind just a curtain with my fanjo out.

Trying not to sound sarky, so meant in the most pleasant way – lucky you !

As I’ve said, I now exclusively buy the same brand and size passion killers every time but a few years ago I was buying two different brands and was 16 in one and 22 in the other. 🤔

The idea that a woman can’t try on clothing without the help of her husband is really strange.

She may be disabled. I’ve a friend who only has the use of one arm (other was amputated from the elbow down). She definitely needs help depending on what she’s trying on.

Well sure I check the sheets, but I don’t know that the person who previously occupied that bed/those sheets didn't have a mammoth session involving all kinds of bodily functions before they were put on my hotel bed. They will have been washed, but enough to remove all traces?

I'm not sure what you think happens when someone tries on a pair of pants over their own for 1 minute? And you know that if people weren't meant to try pants on they wouldn't let you take them into the changing rooms?
Wait till you find out that some people don't wear underwear yet still try on clothes in shops. Not me mind, clean pants are a necessity for me.

Anyway, I will stop derailing. OP, please contact John Lewis and request that people are made aware when booking fitting appointments that the changing rooms aren't mixed sex. Then they can make a choice. Maybe try somewhere like Rigby and Peller instead? Or for something more regular highstreet Boux Avenue? I haven't tried either personally but they could be worth researching.

Thanks for the lecture on other folks, but I’ve been around long enough to know about others dirty habits. But as you say this is derailing the op post.

If people can’t stand the sound of a male voice while out shopping or in a public changing room (how do these people cope in the swimming baths!) perhaps they ought to do all their shopping online - they can try stuff on to their hearts content and return if it don’t fit. What do people seriously think will happen in a public changing room the world gone nuts!

thedramaQueen · 31/01/2026 17:52

Who does that!!! I'm not sure I believe this post... because of that!

Don't be so ridiculous.
Of course people try knickers on, I certainly do and have done all my life. What's the problem if it's over your own knickers, same as trying on swimming costume surely. I need to see if they're comfortable or if they cover my bum properly.

Surely you wash new underwear before you wear it anyway.

Perhaps read my posts I’ve already said I wash new clothes. Personally I never done this but I understand many do. But personally think it’s a bit gross hence why I wash new clothes as I’ve said…

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/01/2026 20:50

Did you not keep your own knickers on while trying the matching ones?

If not, you certainly should have!!

She did - op clarified that in later post.. but they came off as she rushed as a consequence of hearing a man’s voice and getting changed fast!!

Can you get free bra fittings when you shop online? That was the reason why the OP was there in the first place.

Don’t know maybe there are services where someone can come to your house? I’ve no idea, but if the sound of a male voice is an issue, perhaps it’s worth some research?

I did it over my pants and both came off in the removal.

But you're missing the point here!

No we aren't you dont try on knickers even over your own thats disgusting and unhygienic.
There's a reason that knickers cant be taken back to shops for a refund.

Londonrach1 · 31/01/2026 21:02

Has to be made up. No one ever tries pants on.

WTF, most places you don't try knickers on for hygiene reasons!

Then you weren’t just standing in your bra, were you

It sounds as if OP put the new knickers on top of her own, but pulled both pairs off together, presumably by mistake because in a hurry.

I wouldn’t go back to a shop where men were in the women’s changing rooms.

How else do you know if they fit properly? I've tried them on( over the ones I'm wearing) all my life, so do my mother and siblings, I think it's perfectly normal.

If that was the case no shop would let you take them into the changing room would they. Perfectly normal to try them on. I've tried on in store or even bought them and tried on at home then returned if they didn't fit properly. Try on over my own knickers of course.
