I had a bra fitting today. The partner was excellent and really knew her stuff.

The fitting was coming to an end. I was trying on the matching knickers.

As I was pulling them off, I heard a man talking to someone in a different cubicle just the other side of my curtain. I felt so vulnerable in that moment - I was only wearing a bra. I'd been having normal volume conversations about my boobs and my body with the partner, believing it to be a single sex space. And there was a gap in the curtain I could see out of, so knew it would be easy enough to see in.

I pulled my clothes on as quick as I could, whilst holding the curtain gap closed to recover them.

Once dressed, I found the man about 1m away. He was there with his wife. Why he couldn't wait by the sofa's and her come to him like it has always been, I don't know.

I spoke to the partner and she was very sympathetic. I asked her if there was a single sex space I could have had the bra fitting in, and she said no. John Lewis don't have them.

The bras are the last items I'm buying from John Lewis brand.

Bye bye Waitrose weekly shop.

I get it OP. I wouldn't like it either. They should at least let you know it's not a single sex space so that you can make an informed choice.

And as for all the thread derailers, surely you try on swimwear? What's the difference with trying on a fancy pair of pants.

How else do you know they'll fit? I try swimsuits on over my knickers, which is what they advise. Why would the OP trying underwear over her own knickers be an issue?

TIL that "new" knickers might have been tried on by multiple people in the shop changing rooms. 😱

a husband accompanying his wife into the communal space outside the cubicals of into her individual cubical is a total non issue. Why do you think he cares about you going on about your body issues to the assistant?

if you can't remove shop knickers without also removing your own, you might be needing help before you know it.

i don't care if the assistant suggested it or not. But trying on knickers is rank behaviour.

If you'd come out of your cubicle to walk up and down to see yourself in the full length mirror at the end, then I could understand being uncomfortable.

But a man, helping/with his wife. Yes, a bit odd if it was the specific lingerie change rooms, but I very much doubt he was standing there, peeping along each of the curtains to get a glimpse of you in bra and knickers.

Have you ever used a toilet other than your own? I guarantee a public toilet is a lot more 'yuck' than trying on a pair of pants.

Sorry OP. You’re making a good point that has been lost in the misplaced indignation over you trying on pants over your underwear, as directed .

There shouldn’t be any men in the changing room unless the cubicles have floor to ceiling doors. The partner’s reaction tells you all you need to know. She knew it was wrong.

This. Can’t get my (new or otherwise) knickers in a twist over this at all. Maybe the wife had a disability or needed help in some way. Non issue.

We all know curtains in changing rooms don't close properly . And it's a faff and people get hot changing etc.

Fyi my older brother by about ten years and my brother in law were absolute perves.

And there should be a huge sign saying men are allows into this space where women are trying to get bras fitted : be warned.

Agree with the OP. Men should not be in women's changing rooms. I even feel uncomfortable when they are sat outside the changing rooms on the sofas. Why can't they wander off and get a coffee. My husband wouldn't be seen dead hanging around women's underwear shops even with me and especially anywhere near the changing rooms.

You have your priorities wrong if you care more about a pair of knickers than a woman in a state of undress not be afforded privacy away from men. It’s shameful to be honest.

The idea that a woman can’t try on clothing without the help of her husband is really strange.
