Did I have enough space to reverse

YourJadeSquid · 31/01/2026 12:43

Big white van was parked where the green dots are. I was parked where the red dots were.

I was trying to reverse but I couldn't. Van driver moved a little but then said I had enough room to get out. I honestly don't know if I'm just a bad driver or I needed that much space. He ended up moving and I got out.

Why reverse park... It doesn't change the shape of the car.

Because it’s easier to get out. You should always reverse park into a space and come out front first. It’s much safer as you have much better vision

same as you should always reverse park on drives so you come out front first

BeaLola · 31/01/2026 15:23

I think there was enough room from your picture

I always reverse park into a space , I find it easier and never any problems driving off afterwards - I have always done it and even though new car comes with camera options I just do it

I live in the country and the couple of occasions I have driven into a space at a pub , another at a farm shop I have had a pain getting back out due to the fact that other people have parked besides me on each side and behind and visibility is then more difficult

I was wondering that.

If you need to take up 3 spaces you’re definitely a poor parker.

😂

Maybe most parents care more about hitting a child.

I just rolled my eyes so hard I think I strained something.

In most car parks there isn't enough room to get a pushchair between the cars, or anything else large you may need to put in your boot. Reversing out does not mean flying out backwards at a hundred miles an hour, you have to be even more careful, but sometimes it is necessary!

(However, I could get a bus out of the space OP is talking about)

upstairsdownstairscardboardbox · 31/01/2026 15:29

Loads of space but it's stressful reversing out. Always reverse in if possible unless it's a US style angled car park.

YourJadeSquid · 31/01/2026 14:43

For the van driver illegally parked. Yes

No for you who can't even understand why you would need to reverse in or why its safer. You are a dangerous driver if you have this lack of awareness

Reversing is frightening lol

Sounds like this is the issue. You could practice until you don’t find it frightening. It also makes no sense as you are still reversing when you leave - into a road you can’t see, instead of reversing into the space you have just looked into as you prepare to reverse into it.

You seem to want everyone to just agree you didn’t have enough space but most people think it looks like plenty of space and you don’t want to hear it.

Wellthisisdifficult · 31/01/2026 15:44

Everyone should be able to manoeuvre their car just as well in reverse as going forward. Living in Devon, the amount of tourists we have who freeze when they meet someone on our country lanes and can’t reverse to a passing place. We’ve had to start putting up signs telling non-reversers to not enter the lane.

There was plenty of room to reverse and as others stated you should reverse into parking spots whenever possible as it’s much safer.

if you haven’t got adequate reversing skills you shouldn’t be driving as you’re not safe. Please don’t come to Devon.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 31/01/2026 15:46

I couldn’t but I’m really really shit at manoeuvring. It’s embarrassing really (me not you)

Come on, if you can get a passenger out of a car then you can take most fold up pushchairs past. Someone upthread has already explained the difficulty of reversing out of a car parking space and not being able to see out of the mirrors for longer. Even if you hit someone slowly, you still hit them. @SerendipityJane has given the numbers of the Highway Code rules

Exactly an old woman was killed recently near us by someone reversing out of a parking space

😂 there you have the answer to your question if you don’t understand this.

Youdontseehow · 31/01/2026 15:56

YourJadeSquid · 31/01/2026 13:59

It's not law to reverse park.

No it is not but it’s recommended by motoring groups. And as PPs have said, it is safer reversing in for a variety of reasons.

Cars in the UK are mainly front wheel drive so the space needed to clear the adjacent cars if reversing out of a space is greater.

There is also no legal right of way in a car park so if you hit someone or something, it could end up causing huge drama WRT who is at fault.

As to your original question @YourJadeSquid , there was room to reverse out. That and your reluctance to accept what nearly everyone on the thread, and motoring agencies say, ie that reverse parking is safer, YABVU in complaining about this.

Solost92 · 31/01/2026 15:59

It's like 1.5car lengths, you could easily reverse. Can you do a 3 point turn in the road?

Did you reverse onto the path once he'd gone?

DinoLil · 31/01/2026 16:01

Did you reverse into your parking space?
If not, that's your mistake right there.

BrightLightTonight · 31/01/2026 16:15

You could have got a bus out of there. Plenty of space, if you were struggling, perhaps you need a driver refresher course

DuchessofStaffordshire · 31/01/2026 16:16

Unless you were driving a Type 2 Challenger Tank, you had more than enough space to reverse out of that space.

Science. The turning wheels are at the front so you turn the wheel earlier when driving out forwards than when you drove out backwards.

Sortis · 31/01/2026 16:22

This is a wind up!

YourJadeSquid · 31/01/2026 12:48

Why reverse park... It doesn't change the shape of the car.

The wheels that turn are at the front of your car so the front of your car turns first. It's much easier to get out going forwards and turning that reversing and turning when the front of your car turns towards the cars you're parked by whilst you reverse.

Having said that I have a huge car and always pull in forwards! That's a 2 way road, I have parked forwards in way smaller roads and got out. My car has the turning circle of a cargo ship. I think there's plenty of room.

If you're not confident reversing out there then you should reverse park as it will be easier to turn the front of your car first.

MigralevePink · 31/01/2026 15:02

Wow! I’m not sure what you are reading into what I wrote. Reversing out of a space is sometimes a necessity; it can be done safely. It doesn’t have to be a drama. It doesn’t mean you can’t drive a car properly. No one is disputing reverse is, drive out is recommended but life, and parking spaces and situations, isn’t always straightforward. I am not advocating being reckless. I am not sure how you have reached that conclusion?

No, but being unable to reverse a car into a parking space does mean you can't drive your car properly. Of course it's sometimes a necessity to drive in, depending on the circumstances, but that's not the same thing. Surely you see that having to do it because you just can't reverse your car into a space calls the ability of that driver into question.

YourJadeSquid · 31/01/2026 12:48

Why reverse park... It doesn't change the shape of the car.

Because the front wheels steer the car pivots around the rear wheels. This means is much harder to reverse out of a space as to turn you need the front to swing out.

reversing in means you can drive out. It’s much easier, and safer as you can see better
