Too late because I’ve done it. You’ll all tell me I’m a terrible mum! Bridgerton.

Anyone else let their young teens watch Bridgerton with them?

Mine is 13, I’d be kidding myself to pretend she doesn’t know about sex.

She begged me to let her watch the new series as she saw the trailer and it looked so Cinderella-like and she adores history and the costumes. I originally said no as it’s too sexual.

However she works so hard, and we found out this week that she’d won an amazing award through school, and I just thought she’s old enough to work as hard as she does (highly pressured academic school in which she’s thriving - as well as highly achieving in her sport at a national level), more mature than many adults I know, so surely watching it with me there to ensure she knows what’s normal life and what isn’t. How is it any worse than her watching Stranger Things. After all it’s very likely one day she’ll fall in love and have sex - and yet I worry more about her seeing that than seeing violence.

So we’ve both been totally entranced together watching the new episodes. I laugh when she cringes and covers her face during the steamy parts or when I say “he’s got a nice bum”. To have had a couple of hours together last night smiling and keeping everything crossed for a happy ending. It’s been lovely. (Not watched all 4 yet so no spoilers)

I’m awaiting a ton of “you’re a terrible mum” replies. But hoping to be surprised by a couple of people who are in agreement.

I’ve not seen Bridgaton but I let my kids watch things like breaking bad etc.

You know your child and their maturity.

I would much rather my child watch films about drug dealing and murders though, something they’d likely not experience in their lives rather than things that are overly sexual which they face the pressure of on a regular basis.

I am far more disturbed that you are commenting "he has a nice bum" to a 13 year old whilst watching a sex scene. She's 13, she should not be hearing her mother talk like that - you aren't her peer/friend. You seem to think she is an adult, she is not - no matter how mature you think she is (do you tell her that, she will think that's a good thing to be and will try and be mature to please you).

There are some women who don’t have friends in real life and want their kids to be their friends instead, which is really sad.

Hopefully that’s not happening here.

MrsArcher23 · 31/01/2026 14:16

I was reading books like Flowers in the Attic when I was 13 or 14.

Peonies12 · 31/01/2026 14:18

It’s really bizarre to reward her in that way. You are linking her self worth to academic achievement which could be very damaging longer term. You let her watch it or you don’t, but not as a reward.

Dozer · 31/01/2026 14:19

YANBU on Bridgerton, YABU for your boasting, intense post!

Mindbogglingx · 31/01/2026 14:19

Ive been watching bl series and films for years with my son, since he was 13.

He's in His 20s now still watching them when he has a row or a break up.

Bls,coffee, popcorn tissues, hugs and sitting on the sofa for a weekend then hes over it and completely moved on, till the next time.

I wouldn't change it for the world, and dont give a hoot what anyone as to say about it.

Dont get me started about the drama of a celebrity dieing or a new flipflop or makeup coming out.
Have to be at the shop at 6am.

Yep thats my life and I love it.

I was reading books like Flowers in the Attic when I was 13 or 14.

Same. I watched the hand that rocks the cradle with my mum and she recommended flowers in the attic Confused

Christmasbear1 · 31/01/2026 14:20

In the first series, the main girl was completely naked. Why would you want your daughter to see that?

EmeraldShamrock000 · 31/01/2026 14:20

As children on a Sunday morning, we watched whatever video tape that was rented from the video shop. Freddie, Friday the 13th, Halloween. Scary movies.

silverwrath · 31/01/2026 14:21

I wouldn't inflict it on her because it's unadulterated shite (with pretty dresses). But you do.

I dont know how to respond to this.
But why would a naked body of the same gender be concerning.

You only have to read MN and see that most parents dont care if their kids see them naked.
So whats the difference of seeing it in a film.

I’m right for my child. Yes.

Is there anything 15 rated that you have let your 13 year old know watch? If so, what please?

I took my 11 year old to see the Buddha of Suburbia at the RSC and Death in Venice by the Welsh National Opera in the space of a month. It's fair to say her horizons were expanded that spring, but no lasting trauma.

Josephinemarch1 · 31/01/2026 14:26

Sunnydayinparadise · 31/01/2026 14:29

Come on @BridgertonBadMum you are being very funny.

Wait a couple of years until she tells you she is on the 4th game of thrones book. Then you can start spanking your hand at yourself in punishment. Oh and all of her friends are reading them too.

JuliettaCaeser · 31/01/2026 14:30

We took ours to Les Miserables show mid / late primary. They absolutely loved it. Think the prostitution angle went over their heads.

hellotomrw · 31/01/2026 14:32

It’s just a bum you don’t see anything. Its not like you let her watch game of thrones where its graphic and violent. I think its fine

MrsToothyBitch · 31/01/2026 14:34

I was watching the last season of SATC as it aired when I was your Dds age. I'd certainly read books that touched on sex by that age - I was reading books written for adults as well as some YA stuff- and watched some 15s and other tv shows that mentioned or showed sex. I'm fine. As long as you think she can cope with Bridgerton - and you know her better than anyone here, why not?

I accidentally took my 11 year old to Marty Supreme last week. I usually check but assumed table tennis plus Timothy Chalamet would be 12. Oh how wrong I was. When we got in the cinema, the 15 certificate came up, then the opening sex scene, then the bath incident and the honey incident...and the dog....

Anyway, he doesn't seem any the worse for the experience and I'm sure he's watched 15s at home.

Eek. My sons watched that recently. OK they are young adult but still, I thought they’d just gone to watch a bog standard sport themed movie 😳

I’m not even going to google it. 🫤

Grammarnut · 31/01/2026 14:37

AsTreesWalking · 31/01/2026 13:40

Couldn't agree more!
The costumes are often wrong as well....

Are they? I don't watch it, but only know it by reputation and the odd ad. DD watched one and said it was awful. The books are apparently nothing like the series - I haven't read them either.

TheWonderhorse · 31/01/2026 14:38

Bridgerton, YANBU.
The comment on the bum? No. If I ever heard DP comment on a woman's bum to DS I'd go nuts.

NomTook · 31/01/2026 14:39

FKAT · 31/01/2026 12:56

So if my son gets 4 A*s should I get him a subscription to PornHub?

Only if he also competes in sport at a national level, that’s achievement, otherwise he’s just a sad teenage wanker.

pimplebum · 31/01/2026 14:40

Weird post ? Are you always this desperate for validation ?

are you on the bridgerton marketing team ?

I stayed up till 4 o’clock watching stranger things with my 12 year old , I’ve watched 18 horror films with her - all fine for HER

it’s drama sex not a porno you are watching ffs get a grip ! Great opportunity to discuss sex and relationships

I won’t watch love island or come dine with me with her as I don’t want to rot her brain or expose her to high levels of stupid people - ( ok for me to enjoy by myself though )

my 6 year old is in the room now as I watch sex and the city - great tv ! he’s not interested

relax love

TheCurious0range · 31/01/2026 12:49

Would she not be allowed to watch the historical sex if she was a bit dim and not sporty?

🤣
