To have my birthday party in May

My 30th birthday is 3rd August but I’m thinking of having the party in May just because it’s then a three month countdown

You can have a party whenever you please, I’m not sure I understand the 3 month countdown though

BudgetBuster · 31/01/2026 10:09

Why not have an 11 month countdown? Or a 6.month countdown? Or 8 months?

Have a party whenever you want... but don't go making up illogical reasons.

Mouthfulofquiz · 31/01/2026 10:14

Why do you want a 3 month countdown? Reaching 30 is a big thing for you personally perhaps? Have you been through something dreadful for example and you didn’t expect to make 30?

TidyDancer · 31/01/2026 10:18

I can’t understand why you’d need a 3 month countdown but then you don’t need an excuse for a party anyway so if you want one you should have it. I think people would generally see it as quite weird if you present it as your birthday party though.

KellyJonesLeatherTrousers · 31/01/2026 10:19

Depends what you mean by a ‘3 month countdown’. Do you envisage a number of parties/nights out where you are expecting family/friends to be there, it would be worth managing expectations in terms of time/expenditure you are asking for - people could get weary! If its 3 months of you doing things on your bucket list, go for it.

Isn’t that like putting decorations up in November - by the time Christmas comes you are feeling up of it all

Spoodles · 31/01/2026 10:20

Honestly you're going to be 30. It's not really all that exciting and being 30 will be no different from being 29. It's really weird and attention seeking behaviour to have a party months prior and do a three month countdown.

This!!

It’s your birthday so you celebrate however you want. You want to start celebrations in May then do it.
I don’t get the countdown thing but that could just be how you’ve explained it.
You will possibly get people commenting or moaning but you can’t control their comments so just ignore. We got grief when we didn’t celebrate my DPs 40th at the time.

Brefugee · 31/01/2026 11:35

the German in me says "no bloody way" it is bad luck to celebrate an event before it happens.

If you would be ok with having the party, then the worst happens before your birthday go ahead. If not, don't

(not sure why you need a 3 month countdown, sounds a bit... princess)

What do you mean 3 month countdown, i mean have your party when you want but i don't understand your reasoning.

Lmnop22 · 31/01/2026 12:01

You want a 3 month countdown to your own 30th birthday?

I don’t get it - why? Are you also having a celebration on your actual birthday/in August?

I would probably just do a party on your actual birthday/closest weekend like normal people if I were you….!

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 31/01/2026 12:06

I think it’s weird and unnecessary. I’d come, but would roll my eyes. I think it’s fine to adjust to avoid a new baby/Christmas/term time or to coincide with/avoid a bank holiday. You’ve not explained why May is better than August.

BendingSpoons · 31/01/2026 12:09

A 3 month countdown is a bit random, but you can have a party whenever you like. I'm considering a party in the summer. My birthday is near Christmas, when people are busy. If we had it in the summer, we would have more chance of decent weather, meaning we could have it at home. (And cross our fingers it doesn't rain.)

FettleOfKish · 31/01/2026 12:27

I don’t understand the 3 month countdown bit, but my 40th party was a month early to align with some family visiting from another country. Have a party whenever you want one (just don’t expect people to make a big fuss of you twice if your party and your birthday are months apart).

Mademoidame · 31/01/2026 12:35

Of course you can celebrate when you like, but I thought you were going to say it's because your birthday was early January so no one wanted to celebrate then, or you are are sick and can't have a party on your birthday. I can see why August might not be ideal if you have lots of friends with school age children who might be away. But even then May seems quite early! DH and I have postponed celebrating our Jan/Feb birthdays (not big ones) because I have pneumonia. That seems reasonable because we have no choice!
