DIY ashy gold highlights on box dyed dark brown hair

i have dark brown hair. My hairline is grey and it’s a very stubborn grey! Loreal excellence dark brown hair dye has actually covered the greys for once!

I really wouid like to put some gold ashy highlights but do not want to spend ££££’s getting this done from the hairdresser. Has anyone ever done this at home on box dyed hair and if you have, what did you use and what were the results? I’m not looking for dramatic change just something to make me feel good.

thank you in advance!

You can't have gold ashy highlights. You either have gold or ash highlights. So you need to decide what look you want to go for.

Also, highlights are virtually impossible to do on yourself. If you want to save money, I would call your local collage or salons to ask to be a model. So you will be able to get your hair done at a fraction of the cost (though it does have its limitations).

Very, very difficult to do highlights on your own hair, let alone getting a good colour after box dye - you would have to try and lift it several times, and there's a good chance you won't be able to get it as light as you think. If you're set on it you really need to save up for a professional.

Watch Brad Mondo on YouTube then decide if you still want to try!

I agree. I've just started getting a base colour and foils similar to the shade you want. I got seven weeks before I had to get my roots done. I'd look for a mobile hairdresser, or one that works from home. They are a lot cheaper.

Gold = warm
Ashy = cool

I really don't think you can pull this off yourself, it would be very risky.

Are you not happy with the fact the dye covered your grey hairs?

You're risking the strength and quality of your hair .

Putting bleach on a brown box dye will turn to brass. Don’t do it!
