NHS calls in exorcist

scorpiogirly · 29/01/2026 21:12

That's correct.

An exorcist has been called in by the NHS to a hospice because of many paranormal incidents and sightings of the ghost of a girl in a red dress, witnessed by staff and also patients.

You'd think there has to be something in this right? And if not, what on earth could be going on?

People absolutely do report hauntings in modern buildings and do report seeing modern era ghosts - it’s just not as compelling as seeing Victorian orphans or Roman soldiers. The podcast Uncanny, which a few PPs have mentioned, has lots of stories of people reporting very modern hauntings.

I’ve seen a modern era ‘person’ in my living room. I’ve also seen a cat before I ever had a cat. Do I believe they were ghosts - I don’t know! I know I saw them. But I can’t explain what they were.

People have a very horror movie view of what an exorcism is - it’s not the dramatic scenes of the exorcist films or demons being purged. It’s a prayer service and blessing of a space and anyone who may be ‘stuck’ there who shouldn’t be.

Exorcisms of people are very very rare within CoE and Catholicism these days but are more regularly practiced in some evangelical religions.

The Catholics pivoted to MH issues causing ‘possession’ behaviour a long time ago. The threshold to exorcise a person is very very high.
I used to work with a man who had trained as a CC priest and was apprenticed to one of the Vatican’s top exorcists - who lived his day to day life in a very small rural village in Ireland - and he very deeply believed in the possibility of people being trapped as ghosts.

When it comes to woo stuff I’m of the ‘there are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy’ bent.

Trained as what kind of priest?

@LucyLoo1972

TBH that was kind of my point - I should have been clearer. 😀

Chaplains are partially funded but I’ve never heard of fees being charged for this kind of visit but I’m less familiar with the nuances of the CoE. RC priests don’t charge for house blessings on a new home/home with disturbances although it would be customary to invite them to stay for the dinner/housewarming afterward.

It is also blessings and prayers - that is all. Frankly if it gives comfort to people dying in a hospice and the staff around them I don’t see any issue. Its seems a very tabloid story for the Telegraph.

I agree!

I did work for the C of E but only for a year in a non clergy role.

I do know that they do deliverance ministry though

It only takes one though. My mum died in my house, heard and felt nothing since, and neither has my dog (who are supposed to be more sensitive to unexplained things). And as I said before, it would make more sense if there were hundreds (if not thousands depending on its historical background) of ghosts milling about this hospital/hospice not just one little girl.

Where are all the millions of black plague ghosts?

I wasn't making a case for or against the existence of ghosts, just pointing out that most people, post WW2, didn't die at home.

The old Bristol General Hospital is another one to add to the list of NHS sites with ghost sightings. It was sold off for luxury flats years back, you couldn't pay me to live there! I often wonder if the new residents have seen anything.

WOW. I just posted about an experience at Bristol General Hospital on another thread about places that make you feel uncomfortable. I'd gone for a chest xray and was all alone in a waiting room hung with old photos of nurses and patients in bed - early 20th century photos I imagine. God the atmosphere there was horrendous...I couldn't get out fast enough. Totally agree I couldn't live there.

I’m not making any assumptions, simply pointing out that no evidence of any kind has ever emerged for the existence of ghosts in any setting. I’d be fascinated if it did emerge, or if I encountered something I couldn’t explain, and am open-minded to it, but zilch — even though a notorious murder took place on my first floor landing, the house is a perfectly ordinary, creaky, draughty Victorian house. I also spent many months living entirely alone on an island in the only habitable house in a ruined village that had been evacuated in the 1950s, after some horrible, needless deaths because the sea was too rough to get the person to a doctor. I was often cut off for weeks at a time in bad weather, and there was no electricity. Still no ghosts, though the sound of the seals on the rocks could sound very eerie.

That Island sound amazing! Was it St Kilda? I've always wanted to visit

Yup. 'Oh God are they still getting upset about bloody ghosts? Right chaplain, given they're impervious to reason can you get one of your mates to come in all dressed up and mumble some magic words and chuck a bit of water about? If they really believe the nonsense stories then hopefully they'll believe the nonsense solution too. Yes yes we'll make a donation, take it out of petty cash, it'll ge worth it for a quiet life.'

This about sums it up - combined with a slow news day and credulous readers.

TorturedParentsDepartment · 30/01/2026 11:12

Half my colleagues are convinced our old offices are haunted. It used to be a psych ward and you get pockets in the place where you get a huge chill... other colleagues claim that it's just the dodgy roof and draughts.

My suggestion was that we give the ghost its own caseload.

...and their business always seems to be pissing about with cupboard doors or stopping clocks or just wandering around aimlessly. I have no problem sharing my old house with the dead community but if they're going to cadge free board off me then I would like them to at least help with the tidying or do something useful. They're worse than bloody teenagers with their attitude.

So one small child at the hospital has unfinished business but the hundreds/thousands before and after her didn’t. Got it 😁

BloominNora · 30/01/2026 11:28

I love a good ghost story! I don't believe in them now, but used to when I was a teen - eldest DD is currently going through her 'I believe' phase and is obsessed with various ghost hunting YouTube channels.

There have still been a few things happen which I can't explain though:

  1. When DD was a new born we used to use baby sleeping bags for her - no blankets, pillows or bumpers in the cot. She had a small hand knitted baby blanket that DH's nan had made, but this was always kept folded up over the foot end of the cot.

One night, she'd been in bed for a couple of hours. We checked in on her as we went up to bed and she was tucked in under the blanket. There was no way it had fallen off and she was far too young to have pulled it off.

I took it off her, folded it back up on the end of the cot and just said out loud "We don't put a blanket of her because she will get to hot, her sleeping bag is fine" - never happened again.

  1. My dad doesn't believe in ghosts or spirits either. My mom (who is a believer) bought a charcoal picture of a woman from a jumble sale one day - she just felt a pull towards it. The signature of the artist was a combination of mine and her names. This picture ended up in the cupboard at the top of the stairs. The whole time it was there, the cat used to just run past that cupboard - would never linger on the landing.

My dad was hanging some washing over the banister on the landing to dry - the phone rang so he went into the bedroom to answer it. There was no-one on the other end so he went back to his washing. The stuff he had put out had all been turned length ways - he'd been gone less than 20 seconds. He also claims that on a couple of occasions he'd called up to me and I'd replied, even though I was out!

After the washing incident her threw the picture away - nothing else ever happened and the cat went back to sleeping happily by the radiator on the landing.

  1. When DHs dad died very suddenly, we were all in the relatives room at the hospital. He'd been gone a few hours at that point. MIL received a text message from FILs number - it was blank. We all heard it come through and saw her open it. FILs phone was at home, switched off. When we switched it back on there was no 'sent' blank message, so it wasn't a delayed message or anything.

😂 Yrs, it’s never a tidy ghost, always one that wants to make a mess!

Going into my local co op makes me uncomfortable (all co ops really). They have a weird vibe. Nothing supernatural.

Hospitals that still have that old decor and vibe can make anyone uncomfortable, my old hospital was truly horrible till it had a bit of a face lift.

No, I've always wanted to go to St Kilda too -- this was off the west coast of Ireland, and much closer to the mainland, but in a dirty bit of sea where it did get cut off fairly frequently.

GasPanic · 30/01/2026 11:51

Well if it makes everyone feel better and doesn't cost anything who cares.

Same with Barming Hospital (fun fact: it was the reason we have the word 'barmy'). Was a horrible old institution, one of the last places to have padded cells, and there was an 'apple shed' where particularly unruly disturbed people were taken. All redeveloped into luxury apartments. It must have such bad juju, I couldnt live there!

I live on a housing estate not too far away that was also built on the site of an old psychiatric institution. It was in effect an actual village, with its own farmland, butchers, bakery, church and graveyard.

Considering I am such a wimp when it comes to things of an other-worldly nature (I can't even go downstairs at night without being scared something is going to jump out at me 🙈), it doesn't really bother me. There's such a community feel here that the site's previous use feels world's away (despite some of the buildings remaining and converted into properties).

I have a STEM background and I completely have an open mind with regards to the existence of 'ghosts'.

As a PP said, there's so much we know now that would have been scorned 100 years ago, so what's to say that isn't the same for this? We would be arrogant to think we know everything about life and the universe.

And there you go, making claims for which there is no evidence whatsoever. Everything we know about the human consciousness suggests it simply ends when the brain dies as it's a creation of of biological processes.

A quick google would tell you that 'stone tape theory' (not 'stoned tape theory') was invented for a 1972 Christmas spooky play that went out on BBC, and was written by the guy better known for Quatermass. It has no validity as a concept beyond having frightened people enjoyably on TV.

Indeed! Stoned Tape Theory is something very different!

I’ve worked in a similar environment (old burns ward for adults, then children’s cancer ward) and saw and heard many strange things.

Please tell all!
