NHS calls in exorcist

scorpiogirly · 29/01/2026 21:12

That's correct.

An exorcist has been called in by the NHS to a hospice because of many paranormal incidents and sightings of the ghost of a girl in a red dress, witnessed by staff and also patients.

You'd think there has to be something in this right? And if not, what on earth could be going on?

During the height of the 1976 summer drought on a remote farm in Devon, we (a bunch of scruffy students) called in the local dowser to find water on the land, as we were many miles from an emergency standpipe.
He and his magic sticks found an underground stream.

Anyone who's done that kind of thing often enough knows exactly which geographical features are most likely to be indicative of water.

Just out of interest...someone put up on another thread about going along a country road afrer dark and seeing a man with shadowy body, black eyes and white face...and then it disappeared.....it got me thinking....does anyone think there are people who dress up and spring out at people....i dont mean sex attackers but people trying to scare people...i remember that man in devon who wore a latex suit and sprung out at people....is this a thing ?

That or badgers :)

@BundleOfChimneys there’s also a story of a doctor running towards a cardiac arrest and he’s stopped by a man asking for directions out of the hospital. The doctor gives the directions and keeps running only to find his patient has passed but he recognises him as the man he just gave directions to!

not sure how true this is or where it originated but it’s told often on a night shift 😆

😱

A friend of mine is deeply religious and I asked her about ghosts. She said that the churches fully believe in ghosts because of the Holy Trinity/ the father, the son and the Holy Spirit/ghost.

We hardly assumed he had ground-penetrating eyeballs.

Love a Merrilie Watkins story.

Cando6 · 30/01/2026 05:12

Can’t get too excited if it’s making people happy to think they’re doing something. I don’t believe in Gods or ghosts but lots of people do. No more illogical than last rites and prayers and services and Halal and Kosher food to comfort people.

What a bloody waste of money! You’d hope the nhs had a more scientific approach.

I don’t think the NHS has a scientific approach in quite a few areas.

I used to work for the NHS in an old workhouse, which later became a hospital and is now a rehab centre - most definitely haunted

Tell us more!

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 30/01/2026 06:26

I asked if he believed there was a ghost and he said he believed that they thought there was a ghost.

That’s the crux of the matter. I don’t believe in ghosts, but some people do and some people are seeing something or experiencing something, whether it’s down to external factors or psychological effects, and this sort of thing spreads like norovirus in that environment. The good manager in this hospice has called in someone to help calm staff. I hope it works, I wouldn’t want to be nervous in my place of work, either, whether it’s down to spooky-woo stuff or the threat of someone bopping me unexpectedly on the head with a hammer.

FunnyOrca · 30/01/2026 06:27

In Germany, when someone asks the Catholic Church for an exorcism they are diverted to mental health support.

It makes sense that people working 12+ hour shifts see ghosts. I would too.

Thisisnotmyid · 29/01/2026 22:19

There’s a man who wanders called Archie who tends to visit those who are just about to pass. There’s also stories of a women walking the link corridors and a wee boy in the basement. It’s a creepy old building with a lot of history

This is where I work! Not met any ghosts yet but then im a daytime worker, might be different if I were on night duty

Any doctor who stops to give directions on their way to a cardiac arrest is probably not the brightest!

Near where i live people used to report hearing the sound of a steam train in the night coming from the direction of an abandoned train station that had been converted into a house. There was an article written about it in the 90s I think.

Years later it became clear that the owner in the house used to play trains with his grandchildren when they visited and the sounds were recordings - wafting gently over the fields.

However- my mother was a nurse her whole working life and has a firm belief in ghosts having seen many when she worked.

DinoLil · 30/01/2026 06:58

@DeftWasp I went on a day course on how to use those bent bits of coat hangers 😆 At the end of the day, we were taken out separately to the car park of the venue. We were told there was an underground culvert and we were to locate it it, find out how deep underground it was and which way the water was flowing. When we'd all had a go, we compared notes back in the lecture room. Every single one of us, 15 people, all had exactly the same results. Those results were correct and we were shown plans to prove it and that it wasn't a mass hallucination thing. Quite fascinating.

laddersandsnakes16 · 30/01/2026 07:02

This is definitely a case of keeping staff and/or patients who feel spooked happy and calm. I worked in a building that had once been a house but was in use as an office. There were imprints of crosses on every door in the building, when I asked what they were there for when I first started working there I was told that several members of staff truly believed there was a malevolent ghost in the building and they had made a big fuss about it and had started refusing to come in unless other members of staff were also in the building at the same time. So management had called in a priest or someone along those lines to “exorcise” the house so that staff felt something was being done to support the staff members. It definitely wasn’t a case of the company actually believing in ghosts. I’m not a believer, but having heard that I then really hated being in that building on my own on the winter evenings - it was a very creepy place, and I don’t think seeing crosses on every door as a reminder really helped matters!

Thanks!

Deliverance ministry is a specialist form of pastoral care ... rooted in the church’s commitment to healing, wholeness and peace for those experiencing distress, whether physical, mental or spiritual. It is offered in the context of prayer, sacrament and scripture, and is embedded within the wider ministry of healing.”

this is the key imo. This is meant to comfort staff and patients. And why shouldn’t hospice patients be comforted? Isn’t that a key pillar of hospice care?

Exactly. NHS is often happy to give placebos like this, see also homeopathy.

Our old workhouse was pulled down, new houses built. The ghosts are still there. I worked in a hospice for a few years. The night staff saw ghosts, one in particular was frightening.

OneNewLeader · 30/01/2026 07:15

Why is it assumed that some Christian ceremony will solve this (non) issue?

We had to call a priest to our house 5 months ago...we had stuff moving around in a very obvious way that couldn't be explained, or a carbon dioxide leak (we have 3 alarms)

bananasplitsallround · 30/01/2026 07:18

Can’t read the article because of paywall but surely it’s to help a distressed dying patient.

Namechangetry · 30/01/2026 07:21

1 YABU to say it's the NHS, it's not it's a hospiCE not a hospiTAL.

2 Don't you think that people at a hospice might spend a lot of time thinking about death and if there's an afterlife and stuff?

3 Normal for Norfolk
