To not get the visceral levels of hatred people have for Keir Starmer

LastChristmasigaveyousomesocks · 29/01/2026 19:58

I’m not suggesting he’s the greatest prime minister ever. I’m not even suggesting he’s good at all. But some people really, really passionately hate him.

He is a bit insipid and doesn’t have much charisma but overall he seems like a decent enough bloke who perhaps lacks the political skill and acumen he needs. He’s out of his depth basically.

But that’s not a reason to actually despise someone is it?

When did we get to a point where we can’t just disagree without painting the other person as the devil incarnate?

The media told people to hate him and those with no critical thinking skills fell for it.

Figgygal · 29/01/2026 21:57

Absolutely aree it is ridiculous
Was talking to a pub acquaintance the other day and he was utterly enraged about Starmer, making threats calling him a traitor it was unpleasant.

He's an educated, measured, professionally successful man working calmly and diligently in the face of complex challenges. It's what this country needs and whilst I'm no labour supporter I can't think anyone better at this point. His government listen and change their minds on things isn't that what we want?

We had big bombastic personality before in that idiot Johnson we don't need that again. The US have it now and look at the state of them.

It's the media and bot campaigns and it's shameful

Vaguelyclassical · 29/01/2026 21:58

I used to watch PM's Question Time when the Tories were still in. Starmer was often quite brilliant (the legal training and all that) as an attack dog, cutting to the heart of things. While I recognize the nigh impossible set of tasks/challenges facing Labor when they took over, there were still an awful lot of unforced errors and I don't know where the Opposition Starmer has disappeared to!

MsSmartShoes · 29/01/2026 21:59

I’ve not voted. However - he is weak and seems to be strengthening Reform with every decision. I’ve never felt such political ambivalence.

Yeah, I don't expect miracles and I blame the last government for a lot of stuff

But we're coming up to 2 years now, well near enough

Another poster has mentioned the good things that labour party have done, but I don't know what they are

I have heard that the NHS is improving. I'm glad that NHS England is going. Apart from that, I can't think of anything. They seem to be very muddled about what they actually want to do.

I think in thr press last week it was around 14 u turns but it might be more - a week is a long time in politics

14!!

How embarrassing for ‘the grown ups in the room’ what with the u turns and their racist / sexist / anti-Jewish / homophobic (take your pick / combine) MPs, where will it end

Croakymccroakyvoice · 29/01/2026 22:03

Coincidentally, the richest man in the world, who owns one of the biggest social media platforms, is extremely right wing and very anti Keir Starmer.

I suspect there is some very targeted anti-Labour, pro-Reform messaging going out on social media. In the same way pro-Brexit messaging was put out before the vote. People not in the target demographics just don't see it so don't know what is being said. You can often work it out though, when lots of people start parroting the same talking points that have little to no facts to back them up.

iloveecats · 29/01/2026 22:07

So Croaky are you saying that the people who disagree with you, are (naturally) followers of Elon Musk, and cannot think for themselves? That’s so weird! I honestly just don’t Get That. 😂

I do think the Labour Government need to up their games on communications. They seem to be forever on the back foot. Why can't they get their pro-Labour message out detailing all they have achieved? Why is the pro Reform messaging so much more successful on SM?

Dollymylove · 29/01/2026 22:11

We have eyes and ears and we know he couldn't govern a class of schoolkids never mind a country. We dont need Elon Musk to tell us

Portakalkedi · 29/01/2026 22:11

People don't 'hate' public figures who lie, are hypocritical, break their word and are generally crap at their job. They feel angry, let down, disappointed, etc.

Pearlstillsinging · 29/01/2026 22:13

sleepwouldbenice · 29/01/2026 20:50

But the greens are doing well? It can't just be the media?

I think it's 'we all love an underdog syndrome'. The media have gone from completely ignoring the Greens to highlighting them (see BBC " Question Time" ). If the Green Party begin to look as if they could form a Gvt, the right wing press/media will soon change their tune.

No. Not at all. Just that a lot of people are being influenced.

This is a long watch but it explains how people were manipulated into voting for Brexit (direct from the horses mouth). It would be madness to think stuff like this isn't still happening. I've yet to meet someone who thinks they were influenced, although this clearly spells out the reality that many were which just shows how insidious the influence is.

He doesn’t stir up any emotion at all in me. I think I’d almost prefer a prime minister I could hate. At least they’d be doing something! Wouldn’t it be nice to have a prime minister we could feel passionate and excited about. When was the last time a crowd of people cheered excitedly for the British PM?

GreyfriarsJobbies · 29/01/2026 22:16

Quite funny seeing him called a Tory and then a communist two posts later. And being called out for selling us out in Davos...despite not being there. Then there's the utter drivel about him having 'broken every manifesto promise'; that's just shite designed to make it sound to the ill-informed that the poster is engaged in politics and knows what they're talking about. He's not been great, but he's been alright all things considered.

Dollymylove · 29/01/2026 22:16

Would you seriously trust someone who thinks he can use his mind to increase the size of women's knockers to run the country?
😇😅😅

Yes. They really do seem to be on the backfoot with this don't they.

She said nothing of the sort.

Christwosheds · 29/01/2026 22:19

Hmm well I lost all respect for him after he came on here and weaseled his way out of questions on single sex spaces. I think he’s been rather spineless on women’s rights, but I don’t ‘hate’ him, I just didn’t vote for him.

lazyarse123 · 29/01/2026 22:19

I can't stand him. The usual sensible thing to do if you want to make a policy should be to research and have focus groups before you do something. Not do it then have thousands of people telling you it won't work so you have to u-turn. It's bollocks when they say they've listened to people, why not do that first?
That's the trouble when you don't let your ministers vote the way they believe and sack them if they go against you.
He also does nothing for our military except pay lip service. Quite happy for them to be prosecuted.
He is a consumate liar. I remember him saying the waspi women would be compensated if they got elected, well apparently now it can't be done because it's not practical. Wtf does that even mean.
And no i don't like Farage either.

ACynicalDad · 29/01/2026 22:21

I read the other day that only 20% of adults actually voted for him, and if a proportion of them have gone off him there's not many left supporting him. I think if he had charisma he could buy himself time despite being an awful politician. The comment that an ASDA in the West Midlands has lost their deputy manager seems so apt for him. Just flaccid. I wish we'd kept Rishi, the economy was moving in the right direction.

Echobelly · 29/01/2026 22:22

I'm massively disappointed by him... or maybe not as my expectations were never that high. Still don't hate him though and I just shake my head at the media's desperation to try to paint this government as some kind of chaotic farrago (where they've mostly had to manufacture 'scandals'). It's crap and it's messy and not very effectual but it's nowhere near the cronyism, backstabbing and merry-go-round of leaders of the last Tory administration.

Sure, Starmer isn't popular and shouldn't be, but I feel like the media is really manufacturing this idea that he 'has to go' and that everyone is trying to get rid of him. I don't want to defend him, but I really do feel any sense of 'instability' if this government is mostly something pushed by the media yelling about it all the time and not a real thing. It's a pretty poor administration and lacking the spine to actually decry rather than uphold bullshit Tory narratives about the sources of the UK's problems, but it's not falling to pieces like the Tories were.

Lonelycrab · 29/01/2026 22:24

Decent and reasonable points @Echobelly

iloveecats · 29/01/2026 22:25

The man thinks that some women have penises. Therefore to him the single sex category of ‘woman’ does not exist. Women’s rights therefore do not exist to him.

I find it chilling that the man in charge of the UK has so little regard for women, he was happy to take our single sex rights away.

Luckily the SC stepped up and made the right ‘decision’.

Sadly Labour and Bridget Phillipson under the control of man of the people Sir Keir, is preventing guidance on this from being published. Colour me purple.

Agreed.

Though I heard that it was actually a bollard they’ve lost from the Asda car park (in Walsall).
