To not get the visceral levels of hatred people have for Keir Starmer

I’m not suggesting he’s the greatest prime minister ever. I’m not even suggesting he’s good at all. But some people really, really passionately hate him.

He is a bit insipid and doesn’t have much charisma but overall he seems like a decent enough bloke who perhaps lacks the political skill and acumen he needs. He’s out of his depth basically.

But that’s not a reason to actually despise someone is it?

When did we get to a point where we can’t just disagree without painting the other person as the devil incarnate?

The UK still has niches in higher value manufacturing.

Where are they and what do they make? How many jobs have they generated?

WestieBarnDance · 31/01/2026 14:22

Immigration, always bloody immigration. For the so-called silenced folk you lot don't half get a lot of airtime.

If you think any Government can stop the mass migration of poorer folk from across the world - whatever we may think of the legality of their asylum claims - you're utterly deluded. The only way to stop mass migration is to kill them, which let's face it most of you would have no issue with....

Thank God Farage isn't in power, I pray by the time of the next General Election sanity and compassion returns to the people of this country. Starmer's a million times the worth of that filthy snake

BIossomtoes · 31/01/2026 13:12

The industries were naturally declining due to economic conditions.

They weren’t. The world still needs ships and all kinds of industries need steel. In any event, even if you were correct, there was a responsibility to invest in the regions where jobs were lost to create new ones, particularly at a point when the country was awash with money. Norway created a sovereign fund with its oil revenues, the UK had the opportunity to do the same but myopic Thatcher used the money to bribe people like you to vote for her.

Unfortunately China can build a ship bigger better cheaper and faster. The Tyne ship building is over sadly. Mainly due to the need for huge deep water docks. Coal industry is finished and has been for a long time (for obvious reasons).

Rather melodramatic. What about a bit of compassion for the people who actually live here?

AI was promising. Unfortunately Red Ed has ensured we have the most expensive power in the developed world so that manufacturing will go.

I know. I just said that. 🙄 At the time Thatcher decimated the shipbuilding industry here Vickers, Yarrow, Vosper Thornycroft were all profitable. North Sea oil revenues should have been invested in jobs, not squandered on tax cuts.

AI isn’t manufacturing. Once again, apart from a few cars (which need steel) what are we making?

No they weren't sadly. They were always going to go elsewhere. We just couldnt compete. Industries that arent successful cannot be propped up indefinitely by the tax payer. I make an exception for steel for defence reasons but I think Labour are ensuring that goes too I think.

Its the future. We dont all have to be down t'pit to have manufacturing. But as I said. We have the most expensive electricity unfortunately and most manufacturing requires power.....oh dear. The dead hand of Labour strikes again.

You still haven’t told me where this niche manufacturing is and what it makes. I can only conclude it doesn’t exist. And of course electricity was at rock bottom prices before July 2024.

Hardly niche. What do you think Ai Is? Where do you think it comes from? What do you think it could be used for? Who do you think could make the gadgets? Google "AI manufacturing".

Well..apparently the UK was a leader in this. Until Ed Milliband wrecked it because of sky high energy prices. So yes. You're right. Manufacturing cant work here.

So there is no small boats crisis and there is no problem, glad we agree.

@Pineneedlesincarpet you're making assertions which are demonstrably untrue. It's easy to make soundbites, but Labour are neither responsible for the decline of heavy industry in this country nor are they a threat to the current steel industry (or what's left of it)

It's not rocket science (sadly)

Making things including electronic things require power.

We have the most expensive electricity in the developed world.

Fracking is banned.

So we arent a competitive country to manufacture things.

Listen to what the head of INEOS is saying about this.

SeekingAlpha · 31/01/2026 14:52

BIossomtoes · 31/01/2026 12:56

She destroyed the industry the Victorians created and which made the country wealthy. Shipbuilding, steelworks, mining all gone and had no strategy for replacing them hence laying waste to huge areas of England and Wales. North Sea oil revenues were pouring in at that point and instead of investing in deindustrialised areas and creating new jobs she squandered the money on tax cuts. As if that wasn’t enough she privatised everything in sight and created our current housing crisis by selling off social housing. The mess we’re currently in is directly attributable to Thatcherism and no such thing as society.

In the nicest possible way, I think that you may have strayed out of your lane (of expertise) @Blossomtoes

Agreed, but fracking won't solve that any more than more north sea oil exploration will

Prices are extortionate because we'll pay it, it really is that simple and the UK pays more than anyone else because other countries still have a stake in their energy production industry

Of course north sea oil will help. Norway have developed new technologies and have discovered vast swathes of untapped stuff in a similar area to our bit. Norway likes being a rich country. And the government of whatever stripe never interferes in the oil business so they can crack on developing and investing in technology.

Unlike the poor old UK with an anti business attitude to energy. Mainly in order to reduce our carbon footprint to zero. How much of tbe worlds emissions are ours? 1%. So we will wreck manufacturing and the country to reduce World emissions by 1%. While sending our manufacturing to China who use coal fired power. And Keir Starmer thinks that countries will look to tbe UK and be inspired by our energy strategy and do the same by wrecking their own economies and manufacturing. Its pitiful and tragic.

I did answer your questions.

But to be clear, if a woman tells me she has been harassed or abused by a man my starting point is that I will believe her.

But that is not what happened in this instance. Chickenpet offered a second and third hand anecdote. Even then, I would have been inclined to believe him/her, but the wider context makes me rather doubtful. As does his/her deleted post. I can't say 100% either way, though. And nor can you.

Agreed. That’s why I thought it odd that you rather baldly accused her/him of hate speech.

I’m afraid you didn’t answer that question at all.

I don't completely disagree on net zero except that it is a growing industry and this is not the first economic revolution the west has gone through, nor will it be the last. You can be near the fore-front of it or at the back, it's your choice but it's happening whether we like it or not.

That oil will be sold on the international market. The market does not need extra supply, it will keep it's prices high and we will pay for it. It would create more jobs and it would make a few billionaires richer - which in turn may mean a tiny increase in the tax take for the exchequer - but it will make no difference to energy prices in this country.

Using north sea oil night not magically bring down oil prices but there'd be less transportation costs as we are using nearby supply, more economic activity and output and yes some tax revenue. It can't hurt. Sunak was sensible enough to continue allowing new North sea oil exploration
