And has been for several decades- I have googled extensively and no luck!

The song is probably called “You’re Not Here”

Probably by a British band or singer- male vocalist

Came out in the mid- 90’s, or at least that’s when I remember it being on a mixtape someone made for my Mum

It opens with the bloke singing “You’re not heeeeeeeere, you’re not heeeeeeeeere, wo-oh-oh-ohhhhhhhh, you’re not here”

and then the chorus is “I thought the sea would rise and the sky go dark, and the sun would disappear, but the world just turns around the same, except that you’re not here” sung by backing singers

and there’s a middle 8 where most of the music stops and he sings “because life goes on as normal even though you went away, and the twenty first of August was just an ordinary day”

you’d think with all these details I’d be able to find the fucking song, but no!!

It made me think of Forever Autumn by Justin Hayward?

Came to say this, but obvs much older than 90s

Truly terrible in a corny way but one of those that might stay in your head - as someone who works in music some songs are like that - I would nominate East 17- stay another Day in that category along with Alesha Dixon - the boy does nothing .

It was actually just a bit of googling and searching Spotify. The fact that the OP remembered the lyrics so well obvs helped. I think it was the 6th or 7th suggested song.

I googled extensively over the years and never found it 😂

So pleased you've found it. I was racking my brains because I think I would recognise every single in the Top 40 between about 1991 and 1994 as I'd be glued to Radio 1 from 5-7/4.30-7 on a Sunday. So I was doubting your memory of when it was released.

But I didn't forget it, it got to no. 42 in 1994.
