To think we shouldn’t have to contribute to soch if we don’t intend to use it?

For example, I don’t want a state pension - so I should surely be able to opt out of soch based contributions percentage. And just pay a lesser amount to cover anything I do take advantage of.

I think there are better ways - for example

If you want to use public services - pay more sosh.
If you do not - pay less, for example 1% discount for non NHS user.

If you got knocked over and were unconscious in the street with your non nhs badge on would you want to be left where you fell?

HonoraBridge · 28/01/2026 07:34

“Soch”?

Elsvieta · 28/01/2026 07:35

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:27

Stop being facetious. You all know full well what soch/sosh is.

I'd never heard it until just now, and I only know now that it's your personal term for "social security contributions" because you've just said so (still no idea what the H would stand for in that). No, internet strangers don't know full well what words you made up are - why would they?

Ventress · 28/01/2026 07:37

I won’t be using the state pension either (life limited and use phi for my treatment) but I still understand that I have to pay for NI. I’ve paid for it for nearly 40 years. Under your system can I have a refund please @slozenger? It’ll be a lot as I earn a lot and have done for decades but I’m sure you don’t mind.

supersop60 · 28/01/2026 07:38

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:30

Well I think you’ll find I know how to spell it the MOST as I’m the one who used the word first. I’ve spelt it both ways for those who struggle with comprehension.

How rude of you.

“Soch”?

There was a thread about the ‘pench’ yesterday too. Think all the A level and BTEC students have been set some homework essays this week…

ChocolateCinderToffee · 28/01/2026 07:40

Just counting up the things I don’t use but pay for:
anything child-related as I don’t have kids, so education, social care for children, subsidised bus services, entry to just about anything . . .
adult social care services
the bits of the NHS that treat illnesses I haven’t got

The list is endless. But you know what, OP? I’m happy to contribute to all these things because they mean the society I live in is safer and pleasanter.

SparklyGlitterballs · 28/01/2026 07:41

This is probably the weekly wind-up thread. No doubt OP saw how much attention last week's one got from using the word 'pench' for pension and decided to have their own bit of fun.

For the record I'm 62 and have never heard of soch/sosh. There are a lot of things I'd like to quit paying, or pay a reduction on eg TV licence, Council Tax, but I'm intelligent enough to realise that the cost to administer a system to keep track of those who are discounted, and the reasons why, would be exorbitant, and push up the cost of the tax in order to administer said database. OP needs to engage brain more before putting fingers on the keyboard.

GrethaGreen · 28/01/2026 07:42

I also think this must be a wonderful up, especially all the self -treat nonsense OP spouts.

FuzzyPuffling · 28/01/2026 07:46

Bonkers!
But I did have soshages for tea yesterday, and I can spell "different".

Nah...pay up and stop moaning.

supersop60 · 28/01/2026 07:46

Oh, i think I’ve got it.
I thought it was an acronym and I was trying to work out State Operated Contributions H-something.
It’s a shortening of the word social isn’t it?
eg Mr Suchabody has lost his job and is claiming sosh.
How old fashioned.

Womaninhouse17 · 28/01/2026 07:47

When you get to retirement age, if you suddenly find your pension isn't enough or you fall on hard times, would you still expect the state to provide for you? I think a system where people could opt out would be complicated and impractical.

Imdunfer · 28/01/2026 07:49

How much do you expect to be spent modify the tax and pension system so that people could do this?

What happens when you lose your trust find or whatever your source of money is and suddenly need a pension you haven't paid for? At your age you may well be cast iron secure, but most people choosing this path would be to young to know what the future holds.

What exactly is a "non NHS user"? Are you aware that private medical services don't cover accidents or the vast majority of emergencies?

laurini · 28/01/2026 07:49

I dont think you understand how it works do you...

Mumof2heroes · 28/01/2026 07:50

Is she talking about SERPs?
State Earnings Related Pension thats been abolished?

There was a time when people could opt out but then it was realised Pension funds aren't always great.

This would be ridiculously complicated. Imagine every time you used a service, having to prove you're entitled. You need to look up what 'society' means as you happen to be a part of one.

GameofPhones · 28/01/2026 07:53

Immigrate to USA. Good luck with that.

DdraigGoch · 28/01/2026 07:56

But for example a non NHS user who does not want a state pension should be able to opt out of soch payments imo.

Everyone is an NHS user. That ambulance waiting outside the station for a call? That's your ambulance, ready in case you ever need it.

strawberryandtomato · 28/01/2026 07:57

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:16

I’ve never said to duly opt out. Just that I’d like a discount for what I will not benefit from.

My dad did at 61 before state pension age. He had to pay for his own care as he was unable to look after himself. Did he get a massive rebait? No. He had to pay 40% tax on his estate.

Imdunfer · 28/01/2026 07:57

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:54

I would self treat myself. As I always do anyway.

How on earth did you get to have so much money you don't want or need your state pension in a few years time while being so utterly ignorant of what might, and quite likely will soon at your age, happen to you that you cannot "treat yourself".

You've shamed me completely, though. I should obviously have taken some knitbone (comfrey) and stuck some plaster on my shattered arm bone instead of letting a surgeon put a 7 inch titanium plate in it.

Thanks for the laugh out loud and eye roll entertainment.

Womaninhouse17 · 28/01/2026 07:58

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:25

Social Securtity contributions. Prior to 2001 this was their name, and therefore how I choose to word it, as I have done for the entirety of my life.

Why have you chosen a term (soch) that is not commonly understood? You've even previously dismissed people who've asked what 'soch' is, saying it was 'self-explanatory' when it clearly isn't. What does the H stand for?

WelcometomyUnderworld · 28/01/2026 07:59

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:41

I have 4 years left. Begrudgingly

Why didn’t you contract out pre 2016 when what you’re describing was an option?

I’m sure people start these ridiculous threads as a way of other people giving them ideas for a school or uni essay, instead of researching it properly for themselves.

If anyone turned this in as a school essay, they would not be scored highly 🤣
