To think we shouldn’t have to contribute to soch if we don’t intend to use it?

For example, I don’t want a state pension - so I should surely be able to opt out of soch based contributions percentage. And just pay a lesser amount to cover anything I do take advantage of.

OP posts:
RampantIvy · 28/01/2026 06:23

The word soch is simply a word the OP has made up. It isn't even in the urban dictionary. It certainly isn't part of anyone's vocabulary.

The OP is on the wind up.

Bloopbloopbleep · 28/01/2026 06:24

Girl... you can't spell. You have bigger problems.

40andnotsofabulous · 28/01/2026 06:30

I think it is quite blinkered to think in this way. You could argue you want ‘reduced’ contribution as you don’t need nhs etc. However, have you ever used NHS services? Say when you were born? Child vaccinations? Did you go to state school? It may be you have no use to this now, but you will likely have benefited in the past.

You are paying not just for yourself, but for others less fortunate/able to. This is how the system works. I realy don’t understand the selfishness of what you are proposing?

user701 · 28/01/2026 06:31

It doesn’t even make sense. Pench was clearly rooted in a mispronunciation of pension (Penchon - shortened to pench)

Assuming the word was “social” was the OP pronouncing it “so- child”? If so this would be bizarre. Surely it would be something like “soash”?

It’s just a stupid troll thread.

I think child based stuff should remain something we all provide for, to ensure low income families are not affected.

But for example a non NHS user who does not want a state pension should be able to opt out of soch payments imo.

But you might use the NHS one day. For example, if you needed to go to A & E. Private hospitals don't have A & E departments.

WTF did i just read.

OP I don't even know what to say. Madness. I'd love to know where you live that you allegedly use all these 'obvious' terms no one has heard of.

The ramblings of a 13yr old who got locked out of Roblox when parental controls kicked in, got bored of playing with his ding-a-ling and decided to come here for revenge on his "boomer" parents?

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:13

It’s self explanatory

No it isn’t. I can guess roughly what you mean but I have never heard of soch. There’s a social contract in this country and some policies that ensure minimum standards for everyone. It might suit you better to live somewhere where there’s no such thing as society and everyone just looks out for themselves.

There is no such thing as a 'non NHS user"

I never said I wanted to fully opt out, just a discount for what I won’t be using as I cost less to run.

None of us are contributing to current state pensions BECAUSE we might one day draw from one. We are doing it because that is how our society is set up. If you want to live and work here you are expected to do the same. Feel free to emigrate though, of course.

Igneococcus · 28/01/2026 06:50

user701 · 28/01/2026 06:22

That would be all of us since the OP has made it up.

very annoyingly, because so many people have now said it on this thread, AI now recognises it as a UK term for social security citing this thread alone. Hmm

Ah, thanks, I thought it was another one of those things from before my time in the UK.

Soch is a 2002 Hindi language crime thriller mystery film starring Sanjay Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, Arbaaz Khan, Danny Denzongpa and Aditi Govitrikar.

Hahaha

Are you planning on never using an ambulance? A&E? Can you explain how? I’d love to know.

Igneococcus · 28/01/2026 06:58

If OP earns above £50 270 per year, OP will already pay less NI on any earnings above that. There's her discount.

Chenecinquantecinq · 28/01/2026 07:02

The maths wouldn't work. High earners pay for NHS but rarely use it etc. The only way (which is inevitable due to changing demographics) is that the NHS will have to completely overhaul to a quasi private system and the state pension won't exist for much longer. All for the best IMO.

How is a person who pays tax not a contributor? Insulting to say the least.

I see you don't know how taxes work

Could you absolutely guarantee you would never ever use the NHS including the ambulances and paramedics if you had an accident or had a heart attack in the street? Private health care does not have A&E facilities as far as I am aware. Would you expect NHS responders to just leave you on the floor waiting for the private guys to arrive when time may be of the essense?

PoppyFleur · 28/01/2026 07:09

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:14

I’m still happy to pay a percentage. Just with a slight discount as I won’t be using the state pension?

You get a huge discount already. It’s otherwise known as tax relief on your pension contributions, and depending on how much tax you pay, you receive this at 20, 40 or 45 percent.

66babe · 28/01/2026 07:13

I didn’t know what SOCH was either but looking at your explanation I see it’s something to do with TITS so I’m not really bothered now .. 55.. saggy ones that have fed a few children

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:23

But the only option for this thread is opting out if you do not want to select a state pension. You’re over complicating matters here.

Your national insurance contributions aren’t funding your state pension, they are funding future generations.

localnotail · 28/01/2026 07:18

Firstly, you are never a "non-NHS" user, even if you have a private insurance. I can't be asked to explain, but anyone with even a tiny brain cell would understand it.

Secondly, you can never in the 1000 years guarantee you will not need state pension. You dont have a crystal ball and have no idea what is awaiting you in the future.

Mere1 · 28/01/2026 07:21

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:29

I think there are better ways - for example

If you want to use public services - pay more sosh.
If you do not - pay less, for example 1% discount for non NHS user.

The problem with your opting out of NHS services would come if you needed an emergency ambulance-in a car crash, for example. Private is fine for planned procedures, consultations etc. You would be in deep trouble if you had a heart attack in a public place. A private ambulance in the UK, in such a scenario?

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:15

No but it would be a good idea to keep something like that on my ID

Good luck finding a private A&E.

Oftenaddled · 27/01/2026 22:18

Unless you're not breathing air, drinking water, walking on footpaths, eating food, benefitting from security and emergency services, you don't really get to detach from society. You can't pick and choose your taxes as an individual, since nobody gets back based on what they get in. But you could consider politics or emigration as routes to change your tax burden.

Wouldn't it be great if we could each choose how our taxes are spent, like those tokens you get at Tesco's to pop into your preferred charity box 😂
