I feel behind now it’s nearly February.

I have to keep very busy in January or I get depressed. Hate this time of year.

Got back from Christmas in Oz on 4th Jan, then to a three day conference in Bristol. It was miserable weather, but I enjoyed spending time with colleagues and the lovely hotel.

Aside from that, we’ve had two teen birthdays involving meals out, a spa day. theatre and shopping trips.

I’ve played loads of Padel and DS and I have been going to the gym twice a week.

I’ve zhuzhed up our spare room with new sheets, lighting etc. and decluttered to the tune of five car loads to the dump: charity shop.

But now I’m poorly in bed with norovirus - that is a January experience I could really have done without!

AmethystDeceiver · 27/01/2026 19:54

And there's me thinking January is austerity month 😁

We went out for a meal and a sauna for my birthday. Aside from that I've done lots of very blustery walks. Eating more veg and pulses etc after December excess. Trying to rebuild my bank balance and my sanity - more rest, more books, more yoga, upping my step count... This is a fairly typical Jan, no?

SusanChurchouse · 27/01/2026 19:55

I’ve taken my bins out a few times if that counts?

I’ve not been away anywhere and probably won’t this year. I have tickets for a comedy gig in May and that’s about it. It’s DH’s 50th this year so he’s going away with his brother for a weekend at some point.

Pairymoppins · 27/01/2026 19:56

Done nothing! January is always dull and this is the dullest one I can remember, I’m absolutely skint which doesn’t help. However enjoying lots of good books and TV and trying to take some pleasure in the quiet time.

daffodilandtulip · 27/01/2026 19:56

I learning how to be an empty nester. We used to do weekend activities all the time. I still enjoy doing them but I decided to use this winter as a time to enjoy my own space, learn some new crafts, read some good books and I even took out a magazine subscription. I'm waiting for Spring term wages then have some decorating planned.

captainoctopus · 27/01/2026 20:29

Just had a weekend away in the Manchester area (I live on the South Coast).

ShetlandishMum · 27/01/2026 20:38

No. Can't afford it.
Just relocated another country. Settling in.

We have a night booked at a spa hotel in the comming holiday (week 8 here for schools). It's an hour from here so very convient.
Room ready at at noon - 2 course lunch - spa and a booked massage - 3 course dinner - nice room with 2 bedrooms (one for us one for teen) - luxus breakfast - leave at 11 am. We look forward to it.

It's a Christmas gift from PIL. We are grateful.

I went to Hamburg for a weekend a couple of weeks ago and it was a bit of a disaster because there was so much snow the flight got cancelled. Ended up in another German city and spent ages on a train eventually got to Hamburg but it was pretty dead and not exactly pleasant with the temperature around minus 12

i’m going to stick to spring/summer city breaks in future

NoKidsSendDogs · 27/01/2026 21:29

Did a week in iceland for Xmas/NY and heading to Mexico for 10 days in Feb, but nothing planned in Jan. We usually go abroad every 2 months or so.

Berlinlover · 27/01/2026 21:37

How could you possibly be behind, it’s still January. I went to Dublin and Galway on day trips. I live in Ireland.

FortyFacedFuckers · 27/01/2026 21:39

Had a glorious week in the canaries 2 weeks ago.

HolidayPlanningAgain · 27/01/2026 21:43

We were away for Xmas so a quiet Jan. Been to Cheshire for 5 days but don’t count that as it was seeing my dad and extended family.
Have a week in Devon in Feb and a long weekend in Cornwall in March, Hot Holidays start again in June.

Crushed23 · 27/01/2026 21:54

Spent new year’s in Southern California and had a long weekend in Miami in mid-Jan.

Skiing in February
Mexico in March

I like to escape the brutal East Coast winter as much possible (currently -8C here!)

gototogo · 27/01/2026 21:55

No, far too good unless you count the experience of bands at the local pub

Andnowshesatoddler · 27/01/2026 21:58

I achieved a empty wash basket today.
That's my biggest achievement of 2026 this far.

TheChosenTwo · 27/01/2026 21:59

We were abroad for new year and dh and I just had a long weekend in a pretty Cornish town. ‘Behind’ what? Or who? Just live your life as you want and can afford, it’s not a competition or a race.
We don’t have any firm plans for the rest of the year, will go away as a family in the May half term and again in the summer and possibly Feb half term. Dh and I may take some more breaks just the 2 of us and I’ll probably have a girls trip or two. But we don’t book anything much in advance, we’re quite last minute so it’s normal for us to think like this.

louderthan · 27/01/2026 22:01

My year so far: been ill with a chest infection for nearly three weeks; chipped a tooth which on investigation will probably need a root canal; and this morning I woke up to filthy water dripping through my bedroom ceiling from a huge leak in the roof.

NotAnotherScarf · 27/01/2026 22:03

Yep annual winter sun holiday in Tenerife, planning summer hols (ferry booked). Several day trips...but fed up with the rain as I usually cycle somewhere interesting once a week

thisisthebiscuit · 27/01/2026 22:15

We were in Australia for 7 weeks from end of Nov - start of Jan, we’ve a few gig tickets booked for the next couple of weekends

Lol
..im just waiting to get paid on Friday! I know very few people who afford January holidays.

We buy each other a holiday for Christmas. He pays my half and I pay his 😁.

January holidays are cheaper than holidays in most other months IME so they’re great for those of us on a budget. I guess you are assuming that people holidaying in January are also having holidays at other times of the year, but it isn’t necessarily the case. If I can only afford one holiday in a year, I’d rather take it in January as that’s when I’ll most ‘feel the benefit’ of it.

@Clearinguptheclutter

You must have been there the same time as me and DH. We were on a short cruise which docked in overnight in Hamburg before going on to Amsterdam. The first day it was snowing heavily and we were up to our ankles in snow, but the following day the wind was blowing the powdered snow around so strongly it was impossible to go far from the ship so we just popped into the new Westfield shopping centre for a wander and to use the terminal Wi-Fi.

January is usually a hunker down month for us because it's so gloomy but we're retired and got the cruise at a really bargainous price so were able to take advantage of that. We already had a local theatre trip booked for when we got back and that has been it. February and March are busy as we've got a lot of meals out for various events. Main holidays are later in the summer. It's our 30th wedding anniversary this year so we're having a big holiday and also a week to our favourite Greek resort.

I went to Bromley🤣

🤣 We went to Croydon! We took the kids to an escape room and had lunch out. That's enough for me in January!

Ha we were also hiding in the Westfield!
