To not understand how everyone on insta and tiktok is so beautiful

Is it really just filters? I know a lot of them are young which probably helps but when I look around in real life most people are just normal. I rarely see people I would say are exceptionally attractive - is that because they are all too busy posting on social media to be out and about?!

On insta / tik tok they are everywhere, these people who look like models. No wonder it is so detrimental for our young people because it’s making me feel bad about myself and really I’m old enough to know better.

AIBU to just not understand how it’s possible? They can’t all be filtered?

Filters and Photoshop

JudgeJ · 27/01/2026 16:26

Plenty of slap, filters, lighting.

Pinepeak2434 · 27/01/2026 16:26

I have a relative who I don’t see often, but whenever I do I always forget how different she looks in real life without her IG filters

Catwoman8 · 27/01/2026 16:27

Sadly most of it comes down to filters and AI, some people go so far with it they don't look like the same person in real life.

Stonecoldhandswarmheart · 27/01/2026 16:27

Filters. My 17 year old dd is very attractive irl but on tik tok she looks absolutely stunning. Although for some reason I still look like the witch from Snow White lol!

Caerulea · 27/01/2026 16:28

If you, an adult, are having to ask this then imagine the incredible damage this is doing to young women. And men, too!

Thepeopleversuswork · 27/01/2026 16:28

Erm, filters? and photoshop?

Plus the demographic of people who use TikTok and Instagram skews towards younger people anyway.

It's not surprising really.

I used to work with a woman who has quite an Instagram following. She looks completely different in her online photos so I think must use filters even in photos that aren't especially close up.

She comes across on Instagram as extremely confident but at work, she was the complete opposite.

FMLGFastMovingLuxuryGoods · 27/01/2026 16:29

Yep filters.

My oldest friend, who is a lesbian, recently split from her wife and went on a Women seeking Women dating app. She couldn’t believe how many gorgeous women she was connecting with. Until she went on a few dates and had to check it was definitely them as they looked so different. Not to mention on of them was a man (identifying as a woman). She showed me his app pictures - you’d honestly never have known he’s male. but she said she was just sitting awkwardly in a bar with a very obvious man wearing a shorter skirt than she wore thinking of how to safely escape

FMLGFastMovingLuxuryGoods · 27/01/2026 16:30

My adult niece also looks completely different on Instagram than she does in real life. Which is a shame because side she’s gorgeous IRL and doesn’t need the filters

TimeForATerf · 27/01/2026 16:31

how everyone on insta and tiktok is so beautiful

It must be who you follow because there's some fuck ugly people I follow on both of these and some very ordinary people too. I guess if you follow people who just talk about their perfect selves, perfect children and perfect lives rather than the politicians, chefs, sports people and comedians I follow then your results will be skewed.

ShowmetheMapletree · 27/01/2026 16:33

Caked in makeup plus beauty/supermodel filter will give you that clone look. Filters work on live videos too. I am pleased I am married, and don't online date, as it must be like meeting a different person for alot of people! It is refreshing to see people, esp young women be more natural, and actually be themselves!

Edited to say as well that I know somebody irl who takes ages filtering and cropping her pics, that she looks like 25 year old uk size 10 (most taken shoulders up). In reality she is a size 18, 40 something year old that looks her age. If she was honest and real, widened her net, she would have a much better chance of meeting somebody.

turkeyboots · 27/01/2026 16:35

Filters and good angles. They are not posting quick snaps, they'll have 100 of that pose and pick the best.

yeesh · 27/01/2026 16:36

There are thousands of normal people on TikTok! Much more representation than in all the glossy mags I grew up with 🤷‍♀️

Placetobreathe · 27/01/2026 16:38

Actually beauty is in the eye of the beholder and think it depends on your idea of what constitutes beauty.

Personally I excessively made up faces that are totally and unnaturally smooth and often with obviousl lip fillers, coupled with over styled hair really off putting because it takes the humanity out of them.

Imo they might as well be plastic dolls.

I much prefer people who look real. There is beauty and character in reality.

SwipSwopSnip · 27/01/2026 16:38

100% filters, fillers, botox. A friend of mine was going though a very hard time a while ago and she met someone who was heavily involved with Only Fans. They were telling her how she could do it by only showing her face.

My friend showed me photos of what her face could look like, that they had mocked up for her with filters and fillers. My friend was like wow I want to look like this. I said oh it's really fake. She was like oh don't say that. Like, she really wanted this.

But once you put your face out there, you can't take it back and you are then under pressure to keep it up or live some sort of double life.

Anyway she didn't do it thank goodness.

You're a cog in a (patriarchal) system, no matter how much you believe its free will and getting you certain privileges.

By all means, do it if you want, get fillers, botox, etc., but don't plaster your face online everywhere.

Ain't no such thing as a free lunch, and I'd take freedom over beauty.

TreeDudette · 27/01/2026 16:39

Make up, filters, knowing how to take a great photo, photoshop and the fact that less appearance obsessed folks aren't spending their time trying to influence folks on instagram!

Well, as someone who has neither instagram nor tiktok, this thread is a revelation! I can't believe those Fake/Real photos! Do these people just front it out when they leave their homes? Surely all their friends and family know they're faking it online - and wouldn't that just indicate that the person has exceptionally low self-esteem about their looks? What a weird, schizophrenic/split existence.

People do it on their WhatsApp pics too, I means surely they realise everyone knows they don’t look anything like that?!

I'm beginning to think that these people get so used to seeing filtered pictures and videos of themselves, that they begin to believe that they genuinely look that way.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 27/01/2026 16:45

There are plenty of less attractive people online but the algorithms don’t send them To you
