To ask for your experiences of sertraline for anxiety in a preteen

DS12 has had anxious traits since birth, but following some bullying and bad experiences after starting high school these have blossomed into full blown clinical anxiety starting just after half term last year. We have been triaged by CAHMS and have taken him to a private psychiatrist and they both agree this is moderate to severe anxiety likely with underlying neurodivergence. They recommended counselling in the first instance with medication (sertraline) as a final resort. He’s been getting good support at school and had been attending a partial timetable and getting CBT-based therapy through a school wellbeing support service. We have also just gone back to a private counsellor he’d had a few sessions with previously, but as part of his anxiety is social he struggled to speak with her. Over the last week he is displaying depressive symptoms as well, saying he feels incredibly sad, that’s he’s worthless, a burden, etc - and that his brain can’t take in information and he can’t do anything. He’s stopped being able to attend school at all. I am beginning to think it may be time to trial the medication, so keen to hear from anyone who has done this - especially for kids of a similar age or for late-diagnosed autistic kids.

I am sorry to hear about your son, it's so hard.
My DD sounds almost identical to your DS. She has bad anxiety and depression which is turning into agrophobia. We have seen psychiatrists and psychologists for 4 years for CBT therapy etc.
She had school avoidance for many years. The psychologist suspects she is autistic, and are waiting for assessment. She is now 18 but this has been going on since age 12 too. I was told that they wouldn't give her antidepressants until age 18, so for the last 6 months she has been trialling them. She tried fluoxetine first, low dose to start and slowly increased it, but she never felt any better.
She then moved to Sertraline after Christmas. She seemed ok for the first couple of weeks on a low 50g dose, but suddenly started getting palpitations, headaches, sweating and feeling faint. At one point her heart rate was 125 bpm!
We were told to stop treatment immediately while we wait for an ECG to be done, to make sure it was just the medication and not a heart condition. It also made her depression slightly worse.
But conversely, my elder DD (21) has OCD and has been taking Sertraline for 3 years with no problem.
I suppose you could give it a trial at low dose and see if it agrees with your DS. Good luck x
