Thames Water fixed charges

Water bill has gone sky high, and the fixed charges are just crazy!

It feels like daylight robbery by Thames Water...how are they allowed to do this?

It is not like you can move to an alternative.

The fixed charges on water bills (and electricity) are so high.

Ir never used t be like this, left, right and centre we are being ripped off.

Well I had a water meter installed last year by Thames Water and my water bill has gone down from £107 per month to £43. I was amazed; I didn’t expect that at all

MotherOfRatios · 27/01/2026 21:10

I can't have a water meter and the single person discount isn't really accurate imo

Erin1975 · 27/01/2026 21:14

They are allowed to do it because otherwise they will go bankrupt. This is all a result of them borrowing vast sums of money from banks then paying it out to shareholders in dividends. Privatising the water network was madness but we can thank Margaret Thatcher for that.

I know they pay directors huge bonuses it’s all wrong ! They run a shit service, constant leaks where I am and outages and we pay through the nose. My bills have gone up 60%

I don't know about Thames water but the standing charges on electricity and gas are ridiculous. In the summer they are noticeably higher than my energy use bill! It is really unfair to charge people something that doesn't relate to actual usage - as a single person household this really gets me (see also council tax!)

I agree. Thames water supply my block, six flats, and we all pay different amounts. How can that be correct?
One of my neighbours challenged hers and they reduced it, might be worth trying.
