Why are we allowing the US to call illegal immigrants “illegal aliens”?

I find this absolutely sickening!!!! It’s a disgraceful term to use and I feel as though if the US are going to use this disgusting terminology, it should at the very least, be censored in other countries. It is so disrespectful and dehumanising. It’s this sort of language that leads people (hopefully only those who have lacked a basic education) to deem immigrants to be sub human, and paves the way for public acceptance of them being treated in a sub human manner. AIBU to think this is totally abhorrant?

They did start the thread, but you asked me if KimGym would use the term in the UK and I said I don’t know ask them 😂 I don’t think it should be used anywhere.

I do understand what the term means, I understand the definition and the history, I just still think its derogatory and that the current US government love using it to describe immigrants ( and tbh us citizens) who are not white. IMO of course.

America is an awful country in my mind. Nice to holiday in but other than that it absolutely sucks. One good thing about language is that it’s not static. Maybe in time they will be pressured to stop using the word if they really are using it in a deliberately dehumanising way.

Feel free to disagree with me. But I certainly don’t feel embarrassed, to be critical of language that could negatively impact upon others.

The word has a range of connotations, and a number of them are negative. The country is struggling at the hands of a racist president and many citizens share his racist views. This word is very othering. It’s not by coincidence, that it was chosen to mean “little green aliens from outer space”. Its use for that meaning was linked to its existing uses at the time. It’s not like a word with two completely differentiated meanings. The root of the word means that it has “othering” and dehumanising connotations, and it is now being weaponised.

Bonkers.

We absolutely can tell them to stop, there are lots of terms that were deemed acceptable in the past that are no longer tolerated. Illegal Alien is a disgusting term and I hate it every time they say it.

Ok go and tell the US to stop using that term…I’m sure you’ll get a positive reaction. Who will you contact, Trump himself?

Mariets · 27/01/2026 12:12

My brother has lived in the US for over 30 yrs and his status is legal alien, it's just a term they use, it's not an insult.

Spirallingdownwards · 27/01/2026 12:15

Even legal immigrants are called "resident aliens". That's just the terminology they use.

Branleuse · 27/01/2026 12:16

I don't think anyone has started using the term as an insult, which would usually be the reason for changing a common term.

I’ve seen some comments (maybe reddit or something) from younger people having a total meltdown at the term fags for cigarettes 😂

You are right that is disgusting' but news outlers do need to report what US representatives say' otherwise we would not know.
Anyone coining that term here is just plain stupid.

Why are you othering them?

Can’t you find a less derogatory way of expressing yourself?

Othering only in the sense as they are "not from here" which is the same as immigrant means when boiled down to it

It was used to mean "those in space" because they also "aren't from here". And plenty of "alien races" in sci fi are humanoid

I always think of Tom Stade talking about the Midlands and someone selling a bag of faggots

"Where I come from you can't even say that, let alone have a bag of them"

'Othering' thats exactly what it is trying to describe, after all it IS being used to describe someone from 'another' country.
'Dehumanising' of course not, it's is a term used for PEOPLE.
'Weaponised', get a grip.
