What do I do??

I’m away for work, meant to be delivering training today. I’ve not slept all night and since about 4am I’ve had a weird quite intense pain in my right side, at waist height. Constant pain, not waves. No fever, no painful urine, no vomiting or diarrhoea (so far). The nearest shop opens at 6am so will get paracetamol from there (stupidly not got any with me!). I don’t know whether I should be really worried and should be seeking medical attention, or whether to see if pain relief clears it up.
I have a full day of training to deliver, but if this pain stays I won’t be able to concentrate enough to do it. Never had this before! Not sure what to do!

Given that it could be appendicitis (amongst other things) I would suggest that you either get to a doctor, go to A&E.

Given the time of day there now I think that you should call 111 and get a more professional opinion immediately

Go to hospital

OneHundredDays · 27/01/2026 05:56

Yes that sounds potentially serious, you've been worried enough to post here so I'd say it warrants an a&e visit. Or at least a call to 111, but they will likely send you in anyway so prob easier to just go now. Hopefully it will be quiet if you can get there quickly and beat the morning rush.

Hopefully it isn't appendicitis or anything and you're feeling better later.

popdepop · 27/01/2026 05:59

Not worth risking your health over a training session. I’d call 111, take their advice.

olympicsrock · 27/01/2026 06:35

Cancel training . Take paracetamol and go to ED ( before 9:30 is the least busy time)

firstofallimadelight · 27/01/2026 06:58

You should go to a&e, and follow medical advice. Good luck

onetrickrockingpony · 27/01/2026 07:01

Unlike PPs, I wouldn’t call it an emergency if you’re in pain but still able to get to shops etc. i would get the paracetamol, monitor, and try to soldier on but everyone is different.

Notsleepinghelp · 27/01/2026 07:09

It’s gotten worse and 111 have said to go to A&E. It’s like a vice on my side now, struggled to pack my bag in the hotel and had to get a porter to bring my stuff down. Grateful for a colleague who lives nearby who is going to take me in an uber.

Edited - just seen your update. Hope you’re ok.

You could phone nhs 24 and ask for their advice.

Hope you are fine.

BubblyGumbly · 27/01/2026 07:19

Definitely a&e. Hopefully will be a bit quieter at this time.

Well done OP, best to get it checked if it's that painful! Don't worry about the training, it can't be helped if you have a medical emergency. Hope you feel better soon 💐

Topjoe19 · 27/01/2026 09:27

You poor thing. Hope all is OK.

Notsleepinghelp · 27/01/2026 21:23

Update: was in a&e for a long time waiting to be seen, eventually got a CT scan as the doctor thought it might be kidney stones or a gall bladder thing. Turns out it’s severe constipation where I’ve wounded my bowl 😢 got to take movicol to shift everything. I drank lots of water after that and some fruit and the pains already gone down from very acute to a dull ache. Hoping when everything clears I’ll be fine! Have ordered some probiotics as there’s obviously something going on that needs dealing with. What’s weird is I’ve been going most days, but obviously not fully emptying my bowel.

Im glad it was something quite straightforward. What a nightmare to be away from home though!
