Reformer pilates

Am I missing something? Yes it’s good exercise, yes the studios look insta perfect, yes it’s lovely to do with friends now and again but who can afford the price of the classes on a regular basis? You can’t get it for less than £12 for 45 mins around here and that’s with a discount code!! Are any if you doing it on a regular basis? I would still need gym membership on top if that as I like to do cardio too. It can’t be people going week in / week out surely?

I did it for a while and enjoyed it, but yes had to give it up because of the cost.

BitOutOfPractice · 27/01/2026 08:30

My gym has just opened a really lovely reformer studio. They run 10 classes a day, all full.

It’s £40 a pop at the boujie studio in town!

cantthinkofagoodusername1 · 27/01/2026 08:36

I really enjoy it, but I only do it because the classes are included in my gym membership. I wouldn't otherwise, I couldn't justify the cost. As to whether it is any better than mat pilates, I don't know because I've only ever done a couple of mat pilates classes.

ThisHazelPombear · 27/01/2026 08:49

Those women have more disposable money than you and can afford it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 27/01/2026 08:59

I started going this year - I can only afford one class a week but I wish I could go twice! I pay £35 for two classes but it would be £20 individually. I do weights separately and walk about 15k steps a day.

I pay £90 monthly membership which gives 5 classes. It's only more expensive if you buy a single class. As mentioned above, they can only fit in 9 people in one session, so I imagine thats why cost is higher.

To me its been absolutely worth it, better for my body than yoga or mat pilates. I spent £££ on yoga getting nowhere.

9 people at £25 a pop is still £225 made in 45 minutes…. The machines are only about £500 each so would be paid off in about 20 classes and the instructor doesn’t need to be paid £100 an hour.

And is the rent on the premises, electricity and admin support all free then? And professional grade reformer machines are thousands not £550

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 27/01/2026 09:09

Just had trial sessions, but £25 a class in this area, I've checked! Thinking of joining a health club as it would be cheap for using all their services rather than 3 classes a month!

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 27/01/2026 09:09

My friend goes 4 times a week. She also has an expensive gym membership but never goes. She loves reformer pilates and she can afford it, she actually prefers to spend on that rather than other things. She says the classes are always full.

I'd go but it's a 25 minute drive for me and I'd have to pay for parking. We don't have a proper gym nearby either.

Nope but as it’s usually part of the business model for any exercise classes I don’t see why it costs so much more than say a yoga class. Why an extra £90 a class? If they do 4 classes a day and they’re all full that’s £6,300 a week at £25 p/h for a 9 person class.

The only electricity used is the lights and music, the machines don’t use any, the rent is unlikely to be more than £1,000 a week and the admin support is maybe £700 a week if they’re being extremely generous and employing a full time receptionist and not just using a digital assistant app and a few hours of a VA a week.

So let’s say electricity, admin and rent are a generous £2,000 a week. The instructor is say £40 an hour… £1,120 a week. That’s still a profit of £3,300 a week or £13,200 a month. For just four daily classes when most offer way more than that.

Ihatetomatoes · 27/01/2026 09:12

£12 is the cost for most exercise classes anyway.

NippyNinjaCrab · 27/01/2026 09:13

I haven't tried it but tempted. Its £15 for one class here and they are offering a new starter deal 4 classes for £44 it has a time limit to use within 14 days though.

goldenplacemat · 27/01/2026 09:15

I’ve joined for one class a week £80pm and top up to two classes when I can by paying £20 a session. I walk instead of any other gym membership. I wanted to relax and destress and it’s working for the same price as my previous all in membership.

Even at £2k they could pay them off with the profit within 2 months.

Ineedanewsofa · 27/01/2026 09:21

There are so many new studios popping up round here that have no problem filling their classes, so lots of people must be going regularly. It’s also driving the price down a bit which is a bonus. I go weekly again having switched to a different studio that sells bulk credit packs so it works out at £13 a class. My previous one put their prices in up to £25 a class and stopped doing decent discounts on the bulk credit packs!
I had a serious tendon injury 4 years ago to the point where I could hardly walk, reformer has been instrumental in my rehab, to the point where I can actually run again (albeit carefully and slowly!) I also love the challenge of it, I have to concentrate so hard that my usually racing brain is silent 😊

JerryTubs · 26/01/2026 23:11

Is it a chain or independent?

I’m guessing that poster goes to a gym like Virgin Active.

my local VA in north London is £110per month and has reformer Pilates, spin, mat Pilates, sound bath, barre etc etc included, as well as a swimming pool, sauna, steam room. it’s also got a crèche for the kids (up to two hours a day per child included) and a cafe.

TinyDanxee · 27/01/2026 09:37

£12 is a bloody bargain! It’s £30 a class here or £80 if you buy a block of 4 to use over 6 weeks. I go once a week.

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/01/2026 09:48

I do mat pilates for £10 a class and that is a bargain for London (it is a local studio that deliberately keeps costs down).

I understand reformer is more expensive not just because of the initial outlay for the machines, but because good classes are very small and need well trained instructors. Using a reformer without close and proper supervision can lead to injury.

Thee is also the ongoing costs of storing them. My studio has one room and all their classes are mat based so it multi use. It you have reformer machine that room can only be used for reformer pilates.

I just can’t run. I want to, I’m cardio fit (ish) but I am out of breath so quickly when I run 😭

I'm the same. I had an autoimmune disease for years that damaged my lungs so running is out for me.

Sorry about that. I ran on the school run this morning she I’m still coughing, I can do an hour with a high heart rate on the exercise bike etc but running seems like a different animal.

Yeah I kind of knew it was cheap for a class. I paid £20 the two times I went but I had just seen an introductory offer when I posted. I wanted to avoid everyone saying that it’s not that expensive etc. I think even £12 is a lot of money for one class I’ll be honest.

Thanks! You see that seems like a bargain doesn’t it? If you think some women in here are happy to pay £20 twice a week for just the Pilates. Which is kind of the point I was getting at with the pay as you go. I bet if more gyms include a reformer Pilates room then the places that offer only that will notice a decline.

Off to search Virgin active…

Even at £2k they could pay them off with the profit within 2 months.

But they’re not a charity are they, it’s a business so they want to make a profit. So long as people are willing to pay for it, then they can charge what they like.

I go 2 or 3 times a week, which works out at about €17 per class when I buy them in bulk. The classes are usually booked out in advance, and there are waiting lists, so there’s obviously a market for it.

Yes, it’s expensive but it’s investing in my health and wellbeing. I think it’s great - there are women of all ages in the classes I go to.

Like others have said, it’s the only exercise I have ever stuck at, so I will prioritise it over spending money on other things.

TheWillToSurvive · 27/01/2026 10:41

A friend goes to an absolutely terrifying woman in Wimbledon who charges £34 per drop in class from her home!

Dutchhouse14 · 27/01/2026 11:36

Well im going tonight.
I did a free taster last month.
But my (expensive) gym want an extra £10 for reformer class.
I loved the taster and normal pilates may be beyond me (ive never been to a class but tried a video!) so im treating myself tonight but wont be a weekly thing.
So annoyed theres a top up fee for class (I go to David Lloyd)
