Am I missing something? Yes it’s good exercise, yes the studios look insta perfect, yes it’s lovely to do with friends now and again but who can afford the price of the classes on a regular basis? You can’t get it for less than £12 for 45 mins around here and that’s with a discount code!! Are any if you doing it on a regular basis? I would still need gym membership on top if that as I like to do cardio too. It can’t be people going week in / week out surely?

I'd love to do something like this in an ideal world, but realistically I will never be the type of person to get up early enough (my local place seems to like doing 6 or 7am classes), and I hate paying for any type of fitness class when I can find a free workout on YouTube and do something at home.

I didn’t lose a single lb doing Pilates twice a week…

No, I don’t think Pilates is a massive calorie burner. The two times I went I could really feel my muscles aching (including ones I don’t usually use 😂) so I’ve no doubt it’s good. I genuinely thought it would be foo expensive for most people. I agree that two classes a week wouldn’t have the same impact as weight loss injections (not saying the jabs are better or even comparable with getting stronger) but it’s undeniable that it wouldn’t have the same impact on how your body looks. There have been some nice responses on here about strength from women a similar age to me so I might have a look at buying a bed if they get a bit cheaper.

If you're happy running or walking for cardio, I don't think you need a gym membership on top. I do it twice a week with a PT and run 3x a week.

I just can’t run. I want to, I’m cardio fit (ish) but I am out of breath so quickly when I run 😭

Have you ever tried couch to 5k? I did it when I was trying to ease back into running after surgery and it really is brilliant.

rainingagainargh · 26/01/2026 23:33

It is expensive, about £25 a class here but for me it’s worth it. I really enjoy the exercise, paying for a membership makes me go and I am so much stronger.
I am 50 and have had some health issues where I can’t do high impact exercise so I prioritise paying for this. Where I go is independent and always busy. It’s been going for years so there’s clearly lots of people that pay for these classes.

Golightly133 · 26/01/2026 23:45

I pay £200pm for unlimited classes, just finished on Monjaro was doing both for a year completely transformed my body do 4-5 classes per week x

mumoronegirl · 26/01/2026 23:53

I pay £100 a month for 9 x 45 minute reformer pilates sessions which works out much cheaper than pay as you go. There are only 6 people in the classes, they are run by physiotherapists and I always feel like I've worked hard. I enjoy the exercise and how my body feels afterwards. I am so much stronger, more flexible and energetic than I was before. I haven't really lost weight but my body has certainly changed shape for the better and I carry myself better too. I've recently taken up running too and the pilates means my legs are much stronger than before and I don't have any aches or pains after a run because as a result. It's definitely worth the money in my opinion. In fact my daughter also has the same membership but can't use it at the moment as she has recently had surgery so I've taken over her membership too - £200 a month for 18 classes. I'm going to miss the extra classes when she is able to return to pilates. I've thought of getting a reformer at home but I think I'd struggle to stick at it and also wouldn't push myself. Having paid membership and booked classes means I have to turn up as I hate wasting money!

No. I might have to try it when the weather picks up - not the safest area that I live in so need lighter nights / mornings .

Lidl recently advertised this Reformer Pilates machine for (I think) £99.99, but you have to reserve it, and now they're all booked up, to be sold.
I haven't got the room, and I don't want Nigel 'Reformer' Farage looking up me shorts.
(edit: forgot to add pic, but just Google Lidl Reformer Crivit)

EconomyClassRockstar · 27/01/2026 01:07

I have my own reformer and it was the best thing I ever bought.

theyoungishman · 27/01/2026 01:23

Wow that's extortionate! I get unlimited reformer pilates and full gym membership combined for $13 a week (Australia), which is just over £6. Your prices are crazy!

bumblenbean · 27/01/2026 01:52

It is bloody expensive but I’ve become weirdly obsessed with it, having never been a Pilates fan before!

Round here it’s minimum £25 a class but most places do deals where you can get a discount on a package of classes . I’ve got a fairly decent deal (for this area) paying £115 a month membership at a local independent gym for unlimited gym and classes and 4 x reformer a month. I’d like to do it twice a week but can’t really justify the cost, although I sometimes buy extra sessions.

It’s like anything I guess, you just have to decide what you want to spend your money on and whether it’s worthwhile for your own goals. I don’t think you’d lose weight doing that alone (if you wanted to) but it definitely strengthens the core and it’s really satisfying mastering a new move!

Beekman · 27/01/2026 02:11

I do one-to-one classes and I love it. It has definitely helped with the perimenopausal aches and also my mental health. I do feel stronger and more supple. It’s the only exercise I really enjoy, though I do strength and cardio classes too.

I was going to join one of the chains that does group classes but I heard it was very difficult to get into any classes so I did a trial session at my own gym and it was marvellous.

I would do it every day if it wasn’t so expensive. For now, once a week suffices and I still feel the benefit.

dogmama13 · 27/01/2026 02:16

Once and only time I took a Pilates class was last month for my birthday, my sisters got me a class to go with them. It was okay. I would never go again unless I was invited like last time.

If a gym offers Pilates as a group class, great. Otherwise, I agree, it's not worth it AT ALL for anyone seriously looking to lose weight and burn fat.

I LOVE lifting weights. It's like an addiction for me lol. Plus strength training is great for losing weight, burning fat, and creating muscle😎

Crushed23 · 27/01/2026 02:41

It’s $400 a month for an unlimited membership at my local studio. If you go 5 times a week it’s only $20 a class.

Obviously if you pay per class it’s a lot more. Unfortunately I do pay per class because I prefer barre and only do reformer once a week or fortnight.

Exercise classes are my preferred form of exercise so they’re worth the cost to me. I spend $500-700 a month.

Crushed23 · 27/01/2026 02:47

JerryTubs · 26/01/2026 22:18

I’ve done it twice and loved it but I really don’t think I could justify £50+ per month (£100 some of you are saying) for a once a week class, surely this business model will just die out? I can’t imagine many people will pay that much for any length of time when you can get gym membership with 100’s of classes a week to choose from. I was just curious whether it was people like me that have done it as a treat 🙈

Reformer has been around for decades and shows no signs of going anywhere. There are literally hundreds of studios in my city. There will always be people who prioritise their health, fitness, flexibility etc. who will pay the prices.

Franpie · 27/01/2026 03:24

I’ve done a couple of classes, £25 round here too.

But I can’t get over how many of you say you love it and look forward to it. I absolutely hated it. Everything hurt, I didn’t feel comfortable, it was just awful.

I do a strength training class 3 times a week, spinning twice a week and yoga once a week so it’s not like I’m unfit with weak muscles. I just couldn’t get on with reformer at all. Maybe I had a rubbish instructor?

mondaytosunday · 27/01/2026 06:01

£12?? Wow that’s cheap! It’s 25-35 fur group lessons near me. I want to do it too - I’ve done Pilates for years but never tried reformer. But way too expensive. My normal Pilates is £10/hour or free with gym membership - even with membership the reformer is an added cost.

beezlebubnicky · 27/01/2026 06:07

It's really expensive isn't it, I've tried it but I've been doing mat pilates for years and see all the same benefits from that - plus it's harder as you're purely working with your body weight - so I'd say to people save your money and do that.

Also non-UK. I'm paying about £6 equivalent per class. Didn't realise how lucky I am!

Paaseitjes · 27/01/2026 06:51

I only do it during pregnancy and justify the cost as healthcare. I feel like I get more range of accessible exercises. It certainly makes a difference during labour!

reversegear · 27/01/2026 07:02

I went to my first class last night and I’m laying her aching!! I think I’d go again, it was actually way more challenging than I expected.

PurpleCoo · 27/01/2026 07:05

Can you join a gym with a reformer studio? Classes are included in the cost then.

I have two gyms in my town covered by my membership, both have reformer studios, so lots of flexibility to find a class that suits my schedule

I only do it once a week as I do Body Pump and athletic Pilates too, but I find it great to have in the mix. I have tight hamstrings so it helps me to do stretches I wouldn't ordinarily do
