When your child is awarded with HRM, do you have to choose whether you’d like a mobility vehicle straight away?

For example, could you receive the payments for 6 months and then turn around and say you’d like to join the mobility scheme? Or do you have to choose whether you’d like a mobility vehicle or the payments directly, as soon as your child is awarded?

Hope that makes sense, TIA!

You can make that decision when it’s right for you, no need to rush out and sort it right away.

Also, no need to get a Motability vehicle at all if you already have a car that works for you. You can use the allowance on whatever else might help, like taxis, adaptions to your existing vehicle, should they be needed, etc.

The idea is that the money helps you make the right choices to suit their needs, and there’s no one right answer to that one.

Sorry to sound slow but are you saying that I can decide to make use of the mobility scheme at any point of the award? I don’t have to make a decision with 4 weeks or something like that?

As long as you have at least a year left on the award you can get a Motability car at any point.

Thank you! That’s great to know

Also be aware that there may be a delay with your chosen vehicle; we had a 15 week wait for ours; I believe with some the wait can be up to 6 or 7 months, due to supply issues.

Not necessarily true. The garage I work at has 7 seaters in stock with £0 AP.

Helps if i could read. I thought the post I quoted said 6 or 7 seaters, not 6 or 7 months.

Fucking idiot.

To get a motability car you need to have 12 months remaining on your award. So if you are awarded 5 years you can get the car almost anytime (as long as you have 12 months remaining)
