To say that Robot Wars was good for family life?

Robot Wars. An absolute classic. Culled from TV before its time.
AIBU to say that the trash that is on now just can't compete with robots charging around a ring destroying each other? And behind the scenes, building and maintaining robots meant that bored men up and down the country were kept from half starting a multitude of DIY projects that never got finished and also actually bonded with their kids over building a remote controlled robot?!

Agreed, my lot loved it and we even went to the live show on tour a few times too.

Needmorelego · 24/01/2026 08:15

"PIT PIT PIT"
It still exists in various forms just not shown on the telly.

Imisscoffee2021 · 24/01/2026 08:15

I can't remember watching it as a family though I suppose we did as it was on and those were the days of one tv households, but yeah its a cosy memory! I loved Matilda. Also loved the parody episode of it on Spaced when i was older! Both nostalgic memories :)

LlynTegid · 24/01/2026 08:16

I think you may be over promoting its impact, however it was good fun and would be better than a lot of the rubbish tv that there is now.

Hohofortherobbers · 24/01/2026 08:16

Was brilliant, loved Craig Charles in it too

Egglio · 24/01/2026 08:16

I used to watch it on my own! A sole nerd in my family.

Toastythesnowman · 24/01/2026 08:19

I loved it. Showed my DC some clips on YouTube and they were going crazy shouting! I think Gladiators has shown there's an appetite for fun family TV, I'd love to see Robot Wars back.

OddBoots · 24/01/2026 08:20

Robot Wars, Scrapheap challenge, Rough Science, How it's Made - all peak TV for me and for my (now adult) children.

We also watched the US version 'Battle Bots' and have been to see the live shows 'Robots Live' - the live version is still ongoing.

There also a new version of Scrapheap called Zapheap that has just been recorded but I think that is a one off.

I had zero interest in the mechanical aspects of putting them together or how they worked, but I loved watching them try to destroy each other 🤖🪚🔨

I think this is the thing - it appeals to the geeks in us on a functional level, it's a good team/family activity, and everyone can get behind a mob mentality of egging on destruction!

We loved it as a family. Razer was my favourite. We went to see the house robots at the metro centre. Dcs had all the models.

If you want to double up on "nerd" activities then some of the big Lego shows do Lego Robot Wars. It's essentially the same thing but the robots are built from Lego (so it gets even more smashy 😂)

Omg. I need to cancel the family day out were currently on and get home immediately to find this! 😂

DH loved RW as a kid and he got DS7 into it a couple of years ago. They watch old episodes together and go and see the live shows whenever they can. We scoured eBay for the toys and DS loves them, plays with them all the time. The two of them have a video game where they can make vehicles and they've spent hours and hours making loads of robots from RW and crashing them into things. DS has always loved vehicles and crashes etc, so it's perfect for him. He's obsessed!

DD11 and I don't really get it but it's improved DH and DS' bond tenfold, and it gives the two of us a bit of peace... We just have to smile and nod when they start telling us about it, but for the most part it's very much their "thing". I'm all for it and wish they'd bring it back properly!

MirrorMirror1247 · 24/01/2026 10:56

Look up Extreme Robots. It's more or less the same thing, they are doing a bit of a tour this year.

CraftyNavySeal · 24/01/2026 10:57

Scrapheap challenge was also fab! Probably not possible anymore with all the electronics in cars now though, no more Frankenstein cars or van boats

hahagogomomo · 24/01/2026 10:58

Every Christmas they planned to take part “next year” Red bull soapbox things was the same, must take part (didn’t) but the fiddling around with mini robots and mechanical things paid off as DD’s an engineer
