Welfare spending to rise by £73.2bn to £406.2bn

Over the next five years, the OBR is forecasting that UK welfare spending will rise by £73.2bn to £406.2bn.

How does everyone feel about this? I’m livid because I pay lots of tax. I don’t mind paying tax to maintain a civilised society - but this? This is surely taking the piss and will result in weaker and weaker services as the amount of £ available reduces day by day.

YANBU - it’s totally deranged. The every growing uk population can’t function effectively on such a benefits for all basis.

YABU - this welfare spending bill is truly representative of need.

Many elderly are just as disabled as young claimants…no pip or mobility allowance for them. Attendance allowance probably wouldn’t be enough to put petrol in a car!

£110 a week at highest rate which a lot seem to get awarded.

This country is a joke and a free for all.

I know loads of people on PIP who don't deserve it. There's a few guys down my local pub on PIP and they have jobs on the side . Tradesman kinda work.

My mate Jim is on PIP has a flat.. he spends all his money on cocaine and alcohol. To be fair he does have mental illness but it's exacerbated by his substance abuse. Local authorities don't care. They just throw money into his bank account every week and month.

There's an immigrant woman living in the flat below my father she's arrived in the last few years. She's on benefits and god knows what. A taxi picks up one of her kids for school everyday.

I don't actually care anymore... Live and let live. 😂

Sure. I am in awe at the amount, that some people seem to know about their neighbours financial affairs. No doubt this neighbour has numerous kids as well!🥱

Apologises, I misread medicine as machine.

It’s not about economics, it’s about quality of life.

Many people talk about experiencing loved ones being kept alive beyond having quality of life, through various interventions and medication. (My granny)

My best friend has behavioural variant ftd (dementia), she’s 36 and hasn’t had any quality of life since she was 30. It’s not sinister to know that it would be better not to prolong her life. Had she known this was coming, she would have gone to Switzerland to do it herself.

What do you think would happen if a mother with a disabled child just stopped their medication and let them die?
Or told their medical team that was their intention?
Do you think they should say ok, and stamp a letter or something?

Pensions should only be paid to citizens who were born in the UK.

I have worked in this country continuously since i was 21 years old, never claimed any benefits. Why do you think i should not get the state pension and somone who was born here can claim benefits all their life and that is ok then?

Sofasurf · 24/01/2026 22:17

The biggest cost is rent, due to the lack of affordable social housing and the large increases in cost of private sector rent. Then the triple lock state retirement pension.

until we regulate rent and have better social housing stock and people are paid an actual living wage the cost will continue to soar

Hello, please can you tell me where you have got this from? I have never seen figures showing this so would be interested to see them.

It is funny. They know they work cash in hand, know their bank balance, know all of their medical details.
I have heard of some people on benefits purposely embellish stuff to see if people will report them.

I have an ex from years ago who was born in the US. His parents were UK citizens but in the US as his dad was working there at the time.
After his birth, he was back in the UK at 3 weeks old. Never went back to the US.

That’s my whole point, as a society we need to change our viewpoint from keeping people alive at all costs, to keeping alive those who are otherwise able to have a decent quality of life.

Mine would be horrified and assume I was having a break down and needed support mentally.

He needs two different medications and parenteral nutrition. Though one medication is more for pain relief than 'keeping alive', he'd survive without it but would be in pain.

Around 16.8 million people in the UK are disabled, making up roughly one in four (25%) of the total population.

Who would get to decide what 'decent quality of life' entails and what the cut off is?

Yes, but not all of them claim benefits.
Having cancer at any point in your life classes you as disabled.

God imagine saying you are a Reform voter out loud.

How embarrassing.

Who are you to judge a person's voting preference. I'd be more embarrassed at posting a fascist statement.

Kirbert2 · 24/01/2026 22:29

An agreement between doctors and the person’s next of kin. I think it is fair to assume that most people have good intentions and want the best for those they love.

Kingscallops · 24/01/2026 22:35

I thought it would be the elderly's fault. Always the state pension getting a bashing from those which fiercely guard the rights to disability benefits.

And who’s gonna make that decision? Would you be happy if I decided that your child didn’t need to live because it was too expensive to keep them alive?

That already happens in many cases. Do you mean it should happen further?

My son wasn't expected to survive initially and I repeatedly had conversations with doctors about quality of life and how if they believed we were getting to the point where they believed he would have no quality of life then further and much more difficult conversations would have to happen.

Quite. Do they think they will not get old. Old age will make any condition considerably worse.

and can cause life long disabilities and medical conditions, especially when children get cancer as chemotherapy is harsher on growing bodies.

@Badacrowe state pension is a benefit, what is so hard to understand?!

A benefit that's been earned.

Exactly, society shouldn't be exerting pressure around which lives are deemed worthy and valuable enough to be supported.

If they have been awarded PIP then they met the criteria and were entitled to it.

You have neatly outlined the problem here.

they don’t have any extra expenses, and doesn’t need the cash and yet you think they should be claiming??? 🤯 this money reduces the public services budgets. Them claiming would be totally immoral, which is why they don’t!
