To be amazed at the charts this week in 1986?

Just looked at the charts this week in 1986 and every single song a banger!

In the charts is Whi’s Zoomin Who? by Aretha Franklin - I wonder if she foresaw the effect of the 2020 Covid epidemic and how day to day life would change? 🤣

But seriously, the charts were of such high calibre then why don’t we get that now?

im going to listen to the charts today - curiosity about Victoria Beckham - but im not expecting miracles !

When that pair of Ken Doll fops squawking "I owe you nurthing - ooh err! etc." got massive, I knew without a doubt that good music had gone into hibernation. Just how?

PuppyMonkey · 23/01/2026 17:41

Yeah, 1986 was good, but not a patch on 1983-85 imho. Band Aid/Live Aid era. Wham, Frankie etc.

KentLocksmith · 23/01/2026 17:46

Number 1 this week is

Dave and Tems with ‘Raindance’ - it’s good I think -

@HauntedBungalow

Yep, only decent songs in that list are Aha, PSB, Eurythmics and Grace Jones, plus FYC which is a cover anyway. With the possible exception of "Borderline" the rest is forgettable dross.

I agree, except I definitely like Borderline, plus I'd add that's not Aha's best song - I didn't like it much at the time. I liked Full Force! But they weren't really a group, more a sort of side project. As for Level 42, never in the history of the world has anyone ever said "what the world needs now is some boring cunt slapping his bass while we play shit songs over it".

justtheotheronemrswembley · 23/01/2026 18:00

Maybe the acid test is 'Will you still be dancing to it at weddings 40 years on?'

LlynTegid · 23/01/2026 18:02

Since streaming and downloads came in, music is listened to over a longer period, so you are not really comparing the same thing. It is like comparing emails to telegrams.

Broadly agree with what you’re saying but I think it unravelled after the summer of 86

Yep. The Stock, Aiken (Aitkin?) and Waterman influx. It all became very manufactured and moved away from bands formed by groups of mates.

I was 16 in 1986 and quite disappointed with the way it had turned. I did start to listen to John Peel, though.

Ah, yes, SAW aka The Shit Factory.

Nope my 20 yo daughter and her friends have all said music was better in the 90’s. My 15yo son listens to drakes & Kanyes first music so even he isn’t listening to new music

My 20 something listens to mostly 80s. He collects CDs from charity shops and rips them to his laptop so he can randomise them.

ComedyGuns · 23/01/2026 18:20

What? Sue Pollard??

I’ve just compared it with the current week and this week’s is SO much better.

Thesuperlativesistillloveyou · 23/01/2026 18:27

I was still into Northern soul niters ,ordinary clubs and music plus beer monsters bored me.

My 20yo has just bought a cd player and lots of cds. It’s nice as I hated my moms music at that age, but I quite like the carpenters now 😂

I love the Nana Mouskouri one !

@HauntedBungalow can we go with wall to wall mainstream bangers maybe?
Why don’t I have any recollection of the Alice song?!!
For PPs slating Level 42, I agree, they are very vanilla. My teen DCs’ musician mates are obsessed with Mark King and his bass genius and they’ve been to festivals specifically to see him. Today’s youth, eh?! 😂

There are a fuckton of amazing bass players in good funk and soul music, no need to listen to MKUltrabore!

sussexman · 23/01/2026 19:03

Largely because you aren't aged somewhere between 13 and 25 now.
