. . . to be appalled at the way a young man with autism is being presented in the Netflix series 'The Good Doctor'?

Shaun is a surgeon. He gives a running commentary to other surgeons (and some patients) on his relationship, how it's becoming sexual and in what way. Everyone is informed when he first has sex, and that he climaxed and his girlfriend did not ~ we see him reading a book called 'The G spot'. He has sent round a survey ~ only to the other surgeons, not patients this time, ' shower sex, yes or no?' And now it's going to be his girlfriend's birthday. He sees fit to place a sex toy (it buzzes) on a female surgeon's desk and ask her, and a female colleague, if this is something they would like themselves.

This dreadful behaviour is presented as a bit annoying, but cute.

Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory
Abed Nadir in Community
Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock
Fred in Little Man Tate
Sam Dawson in I Am Sam
Arnie Grape in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape
Arguably John Nash on top of his schizoid affective disorder in A Beautiful Mind
And that Disney one (was it Disney?) The Boy Who Could Fly.

That’s just off the top of my head.

I love Sheldon - I definitely relate to having a 'spot' on the sofa!

Funnily enough when I was getting ready this morning and YouTube was choosing random videos up popped one with ‘all the times Sheldon was wrong!’

I have my spot! It’s next to radiator, plug socket for Charging my phone, can see out the window and the tv. No glare on the tv. Also it’s where the fan plugs in, in summer. Perfect spot.

What I really want to know is why two and a half seasons in, this is the bit that OP CHOSE to focus on. An episode or two, that is a very small part of the story line. Not just that, but chose to massively interpret it in the worst possible way.

This is one of the chats he has with his female colleagues when he asks for advice .

Who’s really associating autism with being a sex pest…?

It's a tv show, so just don't watch it?

It must be so exhausting to be offended by absolutely everything.

That's brilliant - we've not got to that episode yet.

But autism aside, how much better would a lot of women's and especially younger women's experience of sex actually be if more young men were as open as Sean is in that clip to asking advice, listening and learning about how to give the best parade!

Tableforjoan · 23/01/2026 19:23

Yes he cares about his partners pleasure to try and get advice. Parades for all!!
