We live in a rented apartment that is no smoking. No one in any of the apartments is a smoker. DDs boyfriend vapes. When he first started staying over (both adults) he went round the back to vape. I went down recently and he was vaping at the front door with the door open.
While I appreciate he is going to the door and the weather is bad it is clearly blowing back in. Not only is it making my hallway and the communal hallway stink which as a non smoker is horrid but and as an asthmatic being investigated for COPD having to walk through it to is causing me to cough/have a tight chest and honestly I am getting fed up.
It is also a communal hall so there are other tenants.

Aibu because he is going to the door?
Should I be expecting him to stand outside?
Am I being horrid?

He needs to accept it's a non smoking building and that should include being just outside on the door step where smoke gets in.
No smoking means no smoking.
If he is that desperate he can walk to the end of the road or something.

Does vaping really smell as bad as cigarettes?

vaping so far has no proven health risks for ‘3rd parties’ including children, however if you have asthma/ potential COPD then presumably anything other than air (I mean like scented candles etc) might have a similar impact? In which case - tell him to get an umbrella & crocs and properly stand outside with a closed door behind him.

Needmorelego · 23/01/2026 00:49

@horseplay12 depending on what flavour is in the vape some of them smell really sickly sweet and a waft of the "smoke" can be horrible if it goes in your face.

HeddaGarbled · 23/01/2026 00:54

Also, keeping the front door open when it’s cold is unreasonable.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 23/01/2026 01:48

He needs to go outside. The smell is vile.

nomas · 23/01/2026 02:45

It’s your house, not DD’s or her BF’s.

Tell him he needs to vape round the back.

I never understand why people put up with this behaviour from their dc or their boyfriends or girlfriends.

ChocolateMagnum · 23/01/2026 03:26

I hate it when smokers and vapers do so right by entrances to places. It's absolutely horrible for anyone who has to go past them, for a start. Let alone the fact that, like you describe, all their disgusting carcinogenic smoke/vape goes inside the very building they're not meant to be smoking/vaping inside. YANBU. He's the one being unreasonable and anti-social and selfish.

CrazyGoatLady · 23/01/2026 03:29

I'm guessing he's young? He probably doesn't realise the effect it has. A few of DS1's friends vape and they seem to think it's harmless because they all smell like candies, they don't realise unless it's spelled out that it can still aggravate asthma etc. YANBU to be annoyed, but YABU to assume he's deliberately being a twat. Educate him so he knows better, and by all means get firm if he doesn't stick to the back in future.

He is an adult. There is point in life where you can figure out by yourself what is antisocial behaviour without it being spelt out to you each time.

If he was going at the back of the building before, and now doesn't bother, he knows exactly what he is doing.

pilates · 23/01/2026 06:18

Yes tell him he needs to go right outside and shut the door so the fumes don’t come in plus he’s letting the cold air in.

Catza · 23/01/2026 07:38

You shouldn't be expecting him to do anything unless expectations were clearly stated.
It sounds like it's been going on for a while. Did you ask him the first time it happened to please go outside and shut the door?

BlackCatDiscoClub · 23/01/2026 07:49

I'm a vaper, but i would never assume I could stand inside anywhere that isn't my home to vape. If I visit friends in flats I go right down and outside anytime I want to vape. You are not being unreasonable to request the same for where you live.

The smell of vapes is absolutely vile. Nausea inducing and cloying.

Given the negative side of vaping which is emerging it really will be no surprise if it eventually turns out that vaping fumes also have bad effects for 3rd parties.

So many countries have bans on vaping. It's a shame it's become normalised , especially amongst young people, in the UK.

OP is very right to object to this behaviour.

Shinyandnew1 · 23/01/2026 10:23

It's not his house-he needs to go out, close your door behind him and go for a walk if he wants to vape.

If he doesn't like this, he can stay in his own home.

Presumably all your heat is escaping whilst your door is left open? How nice of him to assume you want to pay to heat up the entire world!
