Is my sister BU to say these photos show little pieces of metal in her food? (Photos attached) (Update with extra photos on page 5)

My older sister has recently begun reading info on bad things in food like microplastics, EDCs, UPFs etc. Now, I agree with her these things are worrying.

She sent me these photos yesterday evening, saying she thinks they show 'little pieces of metal' in her food, and is now worried about how to avoid metal..

I just see bubbles and the light shining. Is she BU?

Maybe I'm wrong. ... Or not...

She says it looks different from bubbles & light. Really?

I think some info on health food on SM can slide into 'government is putting metal in food' conspiracies, personally, and this is why she is worried. I mean, if it is metal large enough to see, why doesn't it taste hard or crunchy?

Or maybe it is weird?

The man in the moon is potato?

I love that 🤣

I told her some of these posts- the serious ones. She says people who deny or laugh do that as a 'defence mechanism' as they don't want to 'face up to what the government are doing to our food.' 🙄

Don't understand which way to vote, but she is certainly being paranoid. There clearly isn't any metal in the photos, and she has anxiety issues around food.

Generally UPFs are bad, but not so bad as being unable to eat anything because you're too mad; tell her to chill and have a slice of Vienetta before she scrambles her mind any further.

murasaki · 23/01/2026 00:18

Ah, ok, that is an Internet related mental health tunnel then. I'm sorry. It will be hard to extract her from it.

Starlightsprite · 23/01/2026 00:20

Why does your sister eat like WW2 is happening right now? 😂 I’m joking, I wish I was that sensible. However, she has clearly become paranoid which is worrying. It’s okay to be aware of these things and try to avoid but she’s being fanatical.

Honestly, she sounds unhinged.
I actually do believe in certain 'conspiracy theories', and I'm sure there are all sorts of unhealthy things in our food.
But I'm actually quite shocked that someone concerned about what they are eating would choose food like this. She needs to go back to basics - fresh ingredients cooked at home.

I agree re bad things happened to food & also re some conspiracy theories being true. But metal in food the way she says is clearly a different level...

Digging a bit, I hear that apparently she'd ordered food to come via home delivery but they didn't have any fish (what she was planning to eat tonight) so she made a tin she happened to have instead.

She agrees the tins are not a good idea & says she doesn't normally use them but thought they'd be OK. So we agree on something...though of course she thinks the tin being bad I'd again due to government interference.

It sounds like she's heading for a psychotic breakdown and if I were her sister I'd be very worried.

On another note, if I was paranoid about heavy metal contamination, the last thing I'd be doing is earing solely from tin cans 😏

I agree the tins are an odd choice 🤣 Definitely paranoid too...

Don't mention the war...that's another of her worries. I actually agree war might happen but not soon. I think these tins are part if some prepper-type stockpile she has. She does agree, now she's tasted it, that clearly this isn't the kind of food you'd want to have in a war situation. I suppose it would put people off stealing it, at least. 🤣

Yes,it's on a plate.

She claims the photos 'don't show enough detail' and she will send a video tomorrow...hmm..

Thats not a plate. Your sister is arranging kale on paper to inspect it and photograph the evidence. I would get her to a psychiatrist asap. I am not kidding. Early onset psychosis is easily resolvable. If you leave it it’s not. That’s it. Your fucked. You aren’t coming back.

Trust me.

I have had psychosis. My family got me quick help and I came back. I know plenty of friends who didn’t make it (was in a group of weed smokers).

You're not wrong.

But bizarrely I can see a scream mask in the bean dish?! 😱

I can see the scream mask now! At first I saw a smiling dimpled face, from the white flecks. It’s like looking into a wood or coal fire, you see all kinds of pictures.

OP, the things your sister worries about would not be visible to the naked eye. A metallic taste from tinned food suggests something wrong with the tin. And why would the government be trying to damage our health?

I can see how an American might suspect the huge drug industry of profiteering by making people ill! But why in the UK, when pressure on the NHS would put pressure on the government that funds it?

Picklelily99 · 23/01/2026 00:52

I'd be more concerned about your sisters diet, looking at those photos!

LeftieRightsHoarder · 23/01/2026 00:52

If she’s preparing for war or famine, she should check the dates on the tins. They don’t last forever. Out-of-date tins could be contaminating her food.

SnowFrogJelly · 23/01/2026 00:52

I think she should be eating nicer looking food

ItsPronouncedThroatwobblerMangrove · 23/01/2026 00:57

I don’t think she’s at all well. I think she’s read about heavy metals as a food contaminant, not understood what that means and is now having intrusive thoughts where her unwell brain is telling her she can actually see these contaminants.

I do believe that some early mental health help is needed here, but understand the OP’s feeling of helplessness in making that happen.

Can't see anything in the veg.
Is that potato?! So smooth, I thought it was ice cream, then porridge 😂 But I can't see anything in there. I think I can see what she thinks are bits of metal, but I I doubt if they are.
Has she got dodgy pans?

I once tried a short cut (once only) and tried to make mashed potatoes in the food processor. It ended up smoother than that and a different colour, but was reminiscent of Clag Glue and stomach turningly inedible.

SomethingUniqueThisTime · 23/01/2026 01:14

The Kale looks like it has white fly on it (top of the picture). I grow my own veg, and Kale often gets white fly. You need to wash it thoroughly in salted water before cooking.

I agree that’s definitely paper and not a plate and the paranoia is concerning.

I have OCD and was terrified about WW3 starting and had constant intrusive thoughts and anxiety. I have a very clever friend who spent hours explaining the reasons it’s not likely to happen and answering my questions and it helped a lot.

I still worry but my friend reassures me and stops it escalating, it’s very easy to spiral and the internet can encourage it so the best thing is to try not keep looking for things to confirm your worries - easier said then done though.

PollyBell · 23/01/2026 03:23

Yes it is very worrying when people obsess and go down rabbit holes of conspiracies especially when they think fiction is fact and especially when relatives are involved, mental health support is strongly needed when people act manic like this

CockSpadget · 23/01/2026 03:43

As a few others have said, your sister seems to be mentally unwell and could be heading towards a psychotic episode. You need to keep a very close eye on her and watch for any further signs of mental deterioration.

Can she explain why the government would be adding bits of metal to our food?

What's the purpose? Try asking her in a spirit of curiosity. Could this purpose not be more easily achieved by more straightforward means?

Think about the massive co-ordination needed to get the metal flakes into all the foods, which are produced and packaged all over the world.

How would the government incentivise tens of thousands of producers to contaminate their products? They'll have to incentivise the food safety officials to falsify their reports, as well, including those in other countries.

The government would have to bring all those other governments into the plot, as well. Governments don't normally co-operate with each other - the reason for adding the metal would have to be overwhelmingly convincing, and even then you'd get them arguing about who should do what.

Why would they do this - and what about the workers at the farms and factories? We must be talking about millions of people altogether. Surely some of them would raise a concern? The mainstream media in most countries would be very interested in a deliberate campaign of food contamination; a whistleblower could get a big payment for the story.

If the media are also being silenced, that is a humungous covert operation, very difficult to orchestrate because there are always some media (Private Eye, for instance) which would do a cover story about the cover-up attempt.

Even if this staggeringly complex operation could be orchestrated, it would be incredibly expensive - and you'd need a large government department to run it, whose workers must also be incentivised to stay quiet.

Can she explain how all this is being done and, more to the point, why?

Sudagame · 23/01/2026 04:23

Are the second two in metal bowls ? Surely not if your sister is someone worried about metal? Maybe it's the light or my daft o clock eyes.

DreamTheMoors · 23/01/2026 04:26

Is your sister okay otherwise, @Carla786?
I mean, I didn’t inspect the food with a fine-toothed comb (ick), but have you noticed any other signs that she’s changed?
Like - and these are purely for example - does she insist on washing her hands in boiling hot water? Does she scrub her hair with lye and a wire brush? Does she require petrol for washing her clothes?
Hahaha those are some pretty out there & drastic examples, but is “the metal in the food that only she can see” her only change? Have there been other changes that you’ve noticed?
It could be - I am NOT suggesting it is - that she might slipping into mental illness.

And before everyone jumps all over me, I’m merely making a suggestion.
Too many American documentaries, I’m afraid.
I apologise profusely @Carla786if I’ve offended you in any way.
❤️

Is your sister quite well in other areas of life? Do you think she may have OCD or other MH issues? She may benefit from some counselling.
