If you could add a zero?

Shamelessly posting here for traffic - interesting hypothetical question came up at a work event last night:
"If you could add a zero to any number in your life, what would it be?"
I eventually settled on my salary but answers ranged from 'number of languages I can speak' to 'number of years I'll be alive' and 'number of weeks annual leave I get'
So.... where would your 'zero' go?

Days annual leave then id be paid not to work!!

This is a really good one, the average person would get 260 days off a year and work about 15 weeks, so your salary pro rata would be higher than if you added a zero to your salary.

floppybit · 23/01/2026 00:57

No it wouldn’t!!! I worked that out completely wrong! Sorry, im being thick and tired 🫣

The number of years left until anyone in my immediate family dies. Eg 1 year becomes 10

Do they get a say in this?

I think if I did this, the person in my immediate family that is most likely to die next would suddenly be me, and it would be zero years! This would not be appreciated... 😂

Is there a clever person on here who can use that 0 to stop climate destruction?

number of days a year my adult children want to spend with me

Surely the only answer is the salary??!

I was disappointed at not being able to improve on this, until I realised I’m old enough for ‘pounds in my pension pot’ to actually be better.

But the real answer is ‘number of children’. Nothing would transform life more than that.

Edit: this is harder than I thought, I just realised I wouldn’t get a ‘number of bedrooms’ bonus.

‘Minutes until I have to get up’ it is!

Adding a zero to any number doesn't change that number in any way.

Are we assuming they meant "multiply by ten" but couldn't quite manage it?

You're not adding zero and the original number together... Eg 9+0 .= 9

You're adding on a zero

So 9 Becomes 90

Or 0.1 becomes 0.01

Add it to the tax % of mining, burning and using fossil fuels....?

To my house value. Then I could sell it and stop work 😬

Oh this is a great one, I’d do this too!

I never thought of this! Me too! I’d never need to work again!

Sorry I really don't agree. I used to think having money was everything and would make everything easier and nicer, but I have since inherited from my parents and another relative, and I would rather have them back than the money. In addition, health issues mean I can't even spend the money doing nice things such as great holidays. Health is the most important thing of all, believe me.

Money does make everything easier.

Plenty of people lose loved ones and get no inheritance. That’s worse than losing them and not getting any inheritance.

Plenty of people have health issues and no money. Much easier to have health issues and not be worrying about money.

All of us who’ve parents would rather have them than the inheritance. However, at least it relieved a couple of life stresses at a miserable time.

Trionly · 23/01/2026 07:44

Definitely house value.

However. No one would buy a 4 bed semi for 9.5m

Or if they would presumably it’d be because all other properties were priced similarly so I’d not be able to benefit from the profit.

My brain can’t let me enjoy these things.

FlayOtters · 22/01/2026 22:45

Some people's brains don't work like others. We're stuck between assuming people mean what they write, even if it seems a bit nonsensical, and assuming we're the problem for not understanding,
or
assuming someone didn't mean what they wrote, which we've been taught is a really rude thing to assume without checking.

Then if we check we're met with dislike or mocking.

I'm only saying this to explain how people can think differently. As a result I'm often very anxious in formal communication.

I'm not trying to get at you, but hoping to explain why I generally don't just assume someone didn't understand what they wrote. A quick clarification really helps.

In this particular case it was fairly clear what was meant from others' reactions, but it makes life easier for more people if we can check without being worried about offending.

£40,000 per year salary becomes £400,000 per year. I must be a genius as I came to that by adding an extra 0 from my keyboard, no maths required 😄

tilypu · 23/01/2026 05:29

I think if I did this, the person in my immediate family that is most likely to die next would suddenly be me, and it would be zero years! This would not be appreciated... 😂

My immediate family is my 3 dogs, 3 children and my husband. Assuming we all have at least 1 year left. Eg dog has a year left - he then gets 10. Assuming I have 30 years left I get 300. Yes you have to assume you aren’t going to be in excruciating pain or riddled with disease etc

but to increase my salary from 60,000 to 600,000 doesn’t mean I won’t be made redundant tomorrow or get hit by the proverbial bus. I have enough money to live off and a lovely house. Enough pension etc If I got the choice of having 10 houses rather than 1 or my dog for 10 years longer, I’d pick my dog.

So I would rather have my immediate family and them be alive for longer.

😜it is unlikely to happen unless the OP has mythical powers so it’s a moot point. But I’d rather time over money.

HopSplidge988 · 23/01/2026 08:26

My age, the. I could make loads of money talking about my story 😜

Snowymcsnowface · 23/01/2026 09:34

Not salary, as then I'd still have to work. I think I'd go for my house price like a PP as we could sell and give up work, or days/weeks off annual leave so I don't have to work 😆 and be around for my kids all the time.

JustWantsSomeSleep · 23/01/2026 09:46

Salary was my first thought but square meterage of my garden is a very tempting consideration... I'd say days annual leave if I knew I'd always have a job

RottenBanana · 23/01/2026 09:58

Thought about this again since last night. Have decided it would be my pension pot not my salary. Taking the 25% upfront would give me over £1M to generate an annual income. I can leave the pot untouched to give to my kids, and even with it now being taxable, they would be set for life.

Frequency · 23/01/2026 09:59

I can't decide if I want to put it at the end of my salary or the end of the figure under "net pay" on my monthly payslip.

On the one hand, £290,000 is a hefty salary; realistically, no one needs more than this to live comfortably, but if I put it at the end of my net pay, I'd have more left over to pay my family a decent salary too and donate to local charities.
