If you could add a zero?

Shamelessly posting here for traffic - interesting hypothetical question came up at a work event last night:
"If you could add a zero to any number in your life, what would it be?"
I eventually settled on my salary but answers ranged from 'number of languages I can speak' to 'number of years I'll be alive' and 'number of weeks annual leave I get'
So.... where would your 'zero' go?

To the years my dog will live.

So then it could outlive you? What's the point in that? Confused

Interesting question.

It wouldn't be my age, I'm 75 and that's more than enough, thanks.

Not my income, I'm comfortable, that's all I've ever wanted.

As I'm retired, annual leave does not apply.

So, what's left? More years for my adult child? But what if they serve them as frail as me? No.

More salary for them? Not really, like me,they want "enough" and they have that.

I have no idea. I have/have had what I want.

The number of calories I can eat in one day without putting on any weight!

Lilbetsy · 22/01/2026 19:47

The number of years my baby will stay a baby

Maryberrysbouffant · 22/01/2026 19:48

How much my house is worth. Then I’d sell it and buy something better but still have loads of dollar left 😂

tilypu · 22/01/2026 19:48

How much pension I'll get when I retire

If I was younger, then my salary

Sorry I really don't agree. I used to think having money was everything and would make everything easier and nicer, but I have since inherited from my parents and another relative, and I would rather have them back than the money. In addition, health issues mean I can't even spend the money doing nice things such as great holidays. Health is the most important thing of all, believe me.

Unfortunately poor people also have health issues and horrible bereavements. Always awful but easier to be coping with those things without worrying about how to put food on the table at the same time.

I agree. I struggle with making the bills every month, it's such a cause of stress to me but I inherited nothing and my darling mum died anyway.

I'd add a zero to the amount of trees in the world.....

Or the amount of books I could read in a month.

Ineffable23 · 22/01/2026 20:08

Gosh, I'm quite torn. Annual leave sounds good but the full freedom of not needing any job at all could be achieved in less than 2 years if I added a 0 to my salary and I think that would probably be more freeing, because then I could do something different, whereas if I had to keep my current job I wouldn't have that freedom. I like the idea of speaking more languages but I could learn a few quite happily if I had plenty of time I think.

I don't want to live for a millennium or anything like it, certainly not without my family.

Hellohelga · 22/01/2026 20:08

I’d say house value but DH wants it on the height he could jump or distance he could run in a minute, so he could win the olympics and get sponsorship. Hes nearly 60.

cocopopps75 · 22/01/2026 20:10

To my salary please!

Princessoflitchenstein · 22/01/2026 20:11

The number of years left until anyone in my immediate family dies. Eg 1 year becomes 10

Papyrophile · 22/01/2026 20:27

Genius question. As we are in the process of retiring, I'd like the extra zero on the amount we can afford to draw off our DC pension.

Lopteluga · 22/01/2026 20:34

Salary.

I quite like to hit 100 years old. Not so sure about centuries though.

Hard agree. I also think inheritance is hard in that you have to lose a loved one to gain the money but the loved one will have died anyway, the money could help you for years. Life without enough money is so hard.

JustforAlice · 22/01/2026 21:00

Great thread 😁
mine would be houses I own as per genius previous poster.

Surely the only answer is the salary??!

Clearly not.

you could read the other posts to see what others would choose. Maybe open your mind up a little.

The6thQueen · 22/01/2026 21:08

To the years I would have with my mum and dad. I would give almost anything to have them around 10 times longer than they will be.
