Fed up of seeing vehicles with no lights on at 5:30pm

It has been dark at the time since Oct. Yet on my journey home from work - I always see around 3 vehicles with no headlights on. Different cars of different ages.

How dump do you need to be not notice these things?

My car is 10 years old and doesn’t have automatic lights 🤷‍♀️

Mines only 8 and doesn't have automatic lights either.

Apparently you can get a fine of up to £5,000 and 9 points on your licence for driving dangerously - which includes driving in the dark without lights. Maybe even the minimum £50 fine might train some drivers to routinely take a couple of seconds to check that their lights on when needed - just the same as you put on your seat belt and give it a quick pull to make sure that it's clicked in, as second nature.

And I highly doubt that claims of "But the headlights are automatic, officer!" would cut it at all. My car has an automatic gearbox, but I still couldn't blame the car if I were to sail through a red light!

Oh my goodness I had a lucky escape then. Got pulled over by the police as my rear lights weren't on - they are automatic. Car had just been serviced and MOT'd and the garage had not reset the lights. Nevertheless I should have checked - totally my fault

I see quite often people with just the daytime running lights on, so they have low lights at the front (so presumably think their headlights are on) but nothing on the back. Nightmare. I've flashed my lights when I see it, but none of them have ever turned their lights on.

RampantIvy · 22/01/2026 15:06

I think it's down to dashboards being permanently lit up now. It's easier for people to not realise that they've forgotten to put their lights on.

I agree. I posted this upthread, but I think a lot of MN drivers are too young to remember this.

Don’t think this is common. Most vehicles have automatic lights.

It’s bikes that fuck me off. People who don’t even bother with reflectives and wear dark clothing. Maybe have a tiny shit light on the back of the bike if you’re lucky.

If you are complaining about them you can see them, what is the problem? Do you complain about pedestrians without reflectives and wearing dark clothing who have the audacity to be using or crossing the road? Fallen trees and debris in the road don't have reflectives either, the solution is to pay attention.

They need a newer car

Why? How old does a car have to be before they started making them without headlights?!

Why would “dumb” autocorrect to “dump” if “dumb” is a proper word?

My phone frequently autocorrects 'proper' words to another word! The favourite one is changing 'in' to 'on' and vice versa.

People do complain about pedestrians in the road in the dark with a death wish yes

They should bring back the men that used to walk in front of cars waving a big flag to warn everyone that a car was coming.

It was actually that MN favourite, a red flag.
