To hate my calls being recorded

Was registering with a recruiter today (I’m not happy in my current job) and as the video call began, they said the conversation was going to be recorded.

It felt like an imposition particularly as some of the questions were quite personal, and made me grumpy. DH says I am “very unusual” and “weird” for feeling like this.

AIBU to hate calls like this being recorded? Interested to understand how other people feel.

I don’t like it either. A lot of our work calls get recorded now.

I don’t mind that emails are permanently kept as something I have said because I have had time to formulate my thoughts properly and read it back before sending. But you can’t do that with phone calls and I don’t like the thought of accidentally saying the wrong thing with a split second to think about it and it gets recorded to be kept forever.

What exactly do you think is going to happen?

The calls are recorded to protect you, their staff, and probably used for training purposes. YABU.

Protect me from what?

Protect me from what?

Presumably if you felt you were asked an inappropriate question, or if they were unprofessional towards you, there is recorded proof on file to be reviewed. It's protecting their staff too.

Again, what exactly are you worried will happen? Do you think the staff are rewatching your video call on their lunch break and having a good giggle over it or something? When you say it made you 'grumpy', were you rude on the call?

Wonderingifiaminfact · 22/01/2026 01:24

No, not rude, just made me a bit guarded I suppose. It put me feel on the back foot being recorded, particularly when sharing quite sensitive information.

I wonder how many trillion hours of calls are recorded and never ever listened to ever again.

Obviously my head is telling me that it’s nothing to worry about - nobody really cares - but it just gives me the absolute rage 😂

Do they actually record calls?

Topseyt123 · 22/01/2026 01:52

So it is one of those systems that records calls "for monitoring and training purposes" I presume.

I can't say it bothers me at all. It's done to protect both parties.
