Neighbour dumping rubbish in my bin

When theirs aren't full?

I just observed one of my neigbbours has dumped her rubbish in my bin while hers aren't even full, i.e. the bin lid is closed. My bin was almost full so the extra rubbish bag now makes my bin seems overfilled.

They did not know that I can see them from my window.

I am inclined to forget it but aibu to ruminate over the reason as to why they just targeted my bin instead of the others?

They know I live alone.

I'd go out and move her rubbish back to her own bin. Hopefully she would see me do it. We can all play silly buggers.

They have been bringing my bin in over the years so I am disinclined to escalate. Ha anybody got a theory as to why she just done that? Especially my bin.

I guess she anticipates hers will become full and thinks you have loads of room? She is being cheeky. How many times has she done this?

Nourishinghandcream · 21/01/2026 13:10

Just fit a gravity lock to the bin?

If anything is ever said, to avoid any unpleasantness just say you did it to stop random people using it when on the street, spilling contents if it were to blow over etc.

Only the one time I observed this morning. Is bin day today.

Maybe she didn’t realise it was your bin? Are they generally kept next to each other?

LaptopOnChargeAgain · 21/01/2026 13:12

But your bin is now overfilled and depending on how strict your bin collection service is the bin lid needs to be closed. They could refuse to empty your bin so I would be inclined to escalate. Your neighbours bring your bin in, not pay your mortgage.

If it continues I would get a bin lock, they automatically open when they are tipped into the bin lorry. They are always recommended on here.

Something in the bag that shouldn't go in that bin, so if it's found it wasn't hers.

Thats my worry. I do have a camera also that captured her activity in the event of prosecution. I am unsure if she notices. I am actually more curious on why she targeted my bin instead of others.

For clarity, bins are not right next to each other.

Get her rubbish out your bin and put it in hers, request politely she doesn't do it again. If she continues get bin locks.

Throwntothewolves · 21/01/2026 15:46

Why are you overthrowing this? Video of her doing it in case of prosecution if something dodgy is found in your bin? Just go and move her rubbish to her bin, or she'll keep on doing it.

MammaBear1 · 21/01/2026 15:53

If it isn’t too late and the bin lorry hasn’t already been round, take it out and take it back to her. Ask her not to do it again.
That’s all you need to do is

HelplessSoul · 21/01/2026 16:25

I voted YABU.

Why?

I dont see the point of you (OP) starting this thread if you arent prepared to put their rubbish back in their bin and not address the issue at hand.

Pointless all round.

PerksOfNotBeingAWallflower · 21/01/2026 16:28

I would have asked you first if I found myself in that position or waited for my own bin to be emptied and then put the bag in the newly emptied bin. That said, I don’t see the big deal, if the bin lid shuts and you’re not charged for the weight of what you dispose of it doesn’t really matter.
