I’m pretty relaxed with dates and cranberry sauce from Christmas ‘24 was still going strong last December. But meat, fish and dairy I’m cautious with. A month would be too long for me

Morepositivemum · 20/01/2026 17:36

Weirdly it’s probably fine, I’ve heard talks on expiration dates in work and the testing and allocation process BUT I’d never chance it, Abc especially not with cheese!!

Ricecrispiesatsix · 20/01/2026 17:37

I would. Heat kills lysteria anyway.

@evermineeverthine I've never had an Aldi kne, but I've eaten plenty if others well beyond 1 month out of date. Not 'bunged up' nor 'shitting like a cia' 🙄

I do make sure they're piping hot though.

Dollymylove · 20/01/2026 17:46

Generally hard cheese is fine, lasts forever but soft cheese is not recommended. I dont know which category camembert would fall into

Normally I’d say yes, but the last Aldi one was a rancid pink stinking mess two days past use by date 🤢

Oh nooooooo😫

Ok so I'm planning to bake the life out of it , get oven up to 200 degrees and then face plant it with some bread.

As long as it isn't pink and slimy I'd cook it but longer and slower. Whatever your equivalent of Gas 4.5 is but make sure it's well bubbly.

Whistle really loudly.

If it comes running it's fully ripe and ready. If it barely moves, leave it for another week or so.

Obsessivepenguin · 20/01/2026 17:57

I agree with the others. If it's pink and slimey then no but otherwise Id absolutely eat it. chances are it wasn't properly ripe by the use by date anyway.

Mmmm mixed responses. I've actually got two in there. A chorizo one as well which is only ten days out so I was pretty sure I'd eat that one. ( Damn you Christmas cheese excess!)

Fyi, I froze a couple of brie and was very pleasantly surprised by how well they held up.

Arlanymor · 20/01/2026 17:58

Cheese walks out of the fridge by itself when it's past its best. It honestly does. Photo looks fine - crack on!

evermineeverthine · 20/01/2026 18:03

Smells DELISH. No ammonia smell

Crack on. It will barely be ripe at a month past use by.

Agreed. Especially if it’s pasteurised it still won’t be ripe!

Looks good. Score criss cross all across the top, chuck on some herbs and a drizzle each of balsamic and olive oil. 😋

I'm not keen on brie but if there's a Camembert or two with yellow stickers they get chucked in the freezer.

Usernamechangeforthis12 · 20/01/2026 18:18

I ate one (not on my own I should say) on Sunday evening, it was out of date and looking a little pink and I’ve had no ill effects.

Brie and Camembert freeze pretty well. They do seem to get more ripe even in the freezer so if it was ripe before freezing it will blow your socks off afterwards!

Wincher · 20/01/2026 18:30

I had one in the fridge for ages, never got round to baking it over Christmas. Best before date was 3 Jan. finally baked it on Saturday night and we all ate a bit, but it was really unpleasant, it tasted of ammonia, so we didn’t have much. Luckily no after effects (so far!)

Vaxtable · 20/01/2026 18:47

No I wouldn’t. Best before maybe, use by no it’s there for a reason

ChavsAreReal · 20/01/2026 18:50

Mine says 21st December. I was planning to give it to the teens. Let me know how you get on, I may have it myself after all.

ohyesido · 20/01/2026 19:01

I don’t think that would taste good, it’ll be very strong and full of that crusty stuff that acccumulates and ruins a Brie or Camembert

CandiedPrincess · 20/01/2026 19:06

Yes, they are about £3. Not worth the risk.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 20/01/2026 19:11

Hard cheese I definitely would but yesterday I opened a brie dated 3rd Jan and although it smelled ok the wax was definitely starting to look grey and a small nibble tasted rank so had to bin it.
