I've bumped my car and it needs to go in to be repaired. I called a garage that can do the repairs and arranged to get it booked in. The car is registered in dhs name but they have spoken to me to arrange the appointment and to get photos etc. there was a delay in getting the parts for the repair and they called dhs phone to tell him and sort another date. He relayed half the message to me and I had to call them to chase it up. I told them to contact me to sort it as he has nothing to do with the repair and it will be sorted by me. They have now called him again to tell him some further information!! Aibu to think this is super annoying and kind of sexist from the garage. I can't even change garages as they are the only approved centre around here!

It could simply be that they inputted his # in their system and they CBA to change it

Have they got your number. It could be that your husband's number ia the default number on their database.

LalalaLava · 20/01/2026 13:54

It's likely to do with the contact number on the file. They should have updated this when you told them explicitly, but I expect the tech just put the phone down and went off to do with work rather than faff about with the computer. I agree it seems sexist but I expect it is more related to the computer system showing one number and it is currently your DHs.

How did they even get his number if it's your car and you arranged the repair?

Or has he previously taken it to the garage himself, so that when they go on their database the reg is linked to his details, in which case you need to actually stand at reception until they change that.

Littlelola · 20/01/2026 14:04

I don't know how they got his number! Possibly linked to the car profile- it's electric and has an account which is in his name but he has not spoken to them about it, until they called him! Bloody annoying. They can happily call him when it's time to pay, maybe I shouldn't try and change it! They definitely have my number as I arranged the repair.

I don’t think it’s sexist, they’re calling the person who legally is responsible for the car. They can’t just go doing something to someone else’s car. Just put the car in your name if it’s yours.

Well if there's an account in his name then that's who they will call. You'll need to set up an account in your name for your car.

Can't your dh add your name and number to his account

This is incorrect. The OP has not confirmed who is the legal owner of the car. The OP has also not confirmed what she means by "registered in dhs name" because she refers to his details on the Garage computer system which may be what she meant, but generally we talk about a car being "registered" as the details on the V5C Registration document which is the registered keeper - not the legal owner. So the DH could be the Registered Keeper per the V5C, he may also be on the Garage computer system, but he may NOT be the person legally responsible for and able to make decisions about the vehicle.

It should not be necessary to put the car into another name. Doing so increases the number of previous keepers on the V5C, viewed as a negative by some, and may not actually be representative of the vehicle situation for example, if the vehicle is company owned but used and kept by an employee.

OP, please contact the Garage and make it clear that you are the primary contact and to ensure your number is first and that only you have authority to discuss and make decisions about your car. It would be helpful if your DH stops interacting with the garage and if they contact him again to direct them to you and hang up without further discussion.
