I am very anti - Labour government, have never voted Labour in my life and never would and I hope an early GE is called …

BUT - AIBU to think he really couldn’t have handled Trump any better than he had? Christ the man is completely unhinged, his behaviour is getting worse and worse - AIBU to think Starmer really couldn’t have done more to handle this?

I thought his statement yesterday was pretty good. Let’s just hope the mad man gets taken out of office before he kicks off another bloody war

managing to help keep ww3 from happening because of an insane megalomaniac being handed the presidency is absolutely worth cancelling out some of it.

That’s really not what Starmer’s done. Or anything even slightly resembling it.

Not forgetting that Trump has also just rubbished Starmer’s Chagos giveaway.

Edited to add: it’s not even a giveaway. It’s an expensive embarrassment.

TopPocketFind · 20/01/2026 19:36

Watch Trump's press conference if you want to know what Starmer has to deal with.

It’s a Tory deal that Labour just concluded and Trump loved it in May. Where are you getting your info?

He didn't think so when the deal was done, a deal negotiated by the Conservative government.

It is easy to know it from personal ratings. Have a look from the GE to now. It’s all tracked in a graph.

Two things. That’s ’until now’ with the usual lag, plus people could be pleased with his response to this but overall still not like him much.

Do you mean this deal....

The deal Marco Rubio personally commended...

“Today, the United States welcomed the historic agreement between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Mauritius on the future of the British Indian Ocean Territory—specifically, the Chagos Archipelago.”

“President Trump expressed his support for this monumental achievement during his meeting with Prime Minister Starmer at the White House.”

“Following a comprehensive interagency review, the Trump Administration determined that this agreement secures the long-term, stable, and effective operation of the joint U.S.-UK military facility at Diego Garcia"

“We commend both the United Kingdom and Mauritius for their leadership, vision, and commitment to ensure that Diego Garcia remains fully operational for the duration of this agreement.”

May 2025....

Starmer and the RoW are dealing with someone who is mentally unstable...

But if i remember correctly a few pro Tory posters were claiming that it was actually a Tory inspired deal and all Starmer did was sign it off...... Amazingly short memories...

I think Kemi Badenoch has played it wrong over this. It was a Tory negotiated deal, and the whole of Europe is being gaslighted by Trump. She should have kept her mouth shut, not agreed with Trump!

Reading the pp responses no I don’t think the personal ratings tally. She approves generally the majority do not.

That’s not what I said. Or even anything that can be evidenced yet.
Edit: or ever, unless someone dies a scientific poll about attitudes to how he’s handled this

Scroll back and read the context. I’m responding to someone who approves of Starmer.

artfiend · 20/01/2026 20:04

I'm no Labour supporter, but I agree with the OP. On this particular issue, I've been genuinely impressed by how Starmer has handled it.

That said, my admiration would increase considerably if he were to resolve the matter with a surprise ninja kick to Trump's head during a meeting, followed by a prompt apology.

The majority of those polled on this thread - (85% 278/328) think Starmer is doing a good job handling Trump. That is quite a surprise given the amount of flack he gets in general on MN these days.

That would be a terrible idea. The apology, that is.

Read back, it was about Starmer generally. Which probably counts more than an mn thread.

No it wasn’t. It was clearly specifically about this thread. “I, along with apparently the majority, am grateful for someone with peace and people as their priority when it comes to negotiating with this dangerous psychopath.”

Agree. Trump needs to get in the bin. He has lost the plot, The man is a fucking fruit loop. He needs sacking NOW. Unfortunately, he has enough people on his side who are happy for him to stay, because MAGA. 🙄

Anyone who is still supporting this man must have rocks in their head. He is fucking awful. A terrible leader, and a terrible person.

Who the fuck does he think he is that he can just take Greenland like a child taking a toy off another child?! Hmm

Problem is, he has never been told no. He is incredibly privileged and spoilt, and just a horrible excuse for a human being.

He thinks he is the most important, powerful person in the world, and that America is the most important country in the world. He is wrong on both counts.

This thread is discussing Starmer's handling of Trump, though. There is a whole other thread deidicated to criticising Labour and Starmer more generally as you well know. Perhaps you'd allow us to have this particular discussion without trying to derail it?

SevenYellowHammers · 20/01/2026 20:30

Never voted anything but Labour but I think KS should do more as should rest of NATO. We should:
ban all travel to USA
ban all travel from USA
boycott all US goods including entertainment, media, google, Netflix, Microsoft, apple everything…
compulsory purchase his golf course in Scotland and turn it into a wind farm
set up an alternative World Cup venue
switch him off all forms of media
block him
revitalise women’s peace movement to siege the USA embassy, kick out occupants and turn it into a women’s only space
close McDonald’s , Burger King, KFC and anything else
impound all Tesla’s and other US cars

Aside from standing up to the twat Trump, we’d probably be happier and healthier.
