My Dad would never let on either.
He just loved knowing a secret that we didn't. Make up your own and taunt him!

wobblyknicks · 13/06/2008 13:43

Pester him mercilessly, but only if you're willing to come on here afterwards and share all the secrets with us too.

nah - leave him to it.

Are you really that interested?

Iklboo · 13/06/2008 13:43

He can't tell. It's part of being a mason. It'll be boring anyway. Let the boys play nicely

maidamess · 13/06/2008 13:43

I think we can guess it involved rolled up trouser legs and deer antlers.

I expect it involves complicated handshakes and tweaking the left earlobe as you pass each other. Also a system of nods, winks, and clicking noises.

To be completely honest I wouldn't be able to leave the subject alone if it was my DP either, I would hassle him until he told me, but then I am a nightmare.

My DH is a member of the free masons and he never tells me anything, but then again i never ask. I agree with Iklboo, it will be boring anyway!

ZZMum · 13/06/2008 14:03

join a women's lodge and then you can both have secrets..

CoteDAzur · 13/06/2008 21:11

The handshakes, words etc are still taught but are quite archaic. Nobody goes around doing special handshakes.

Freemasons recognize each other mostly from words/phrases they use and subjects they raise - phrases from the rituals or references to building allegories, such as everyone works on his own stone, to make it smooth so that stones of a wall fit perfectly etc etc.

Your DH just had his initiation. He knows nothing about nothing yet.

I wouldn't pester him, btw. We each need our own little secrets. Better those secrets be Masonic then about his secretary

ilovewashingnappies · 13/06/2008 21:23

I have a secret....

Lovesdogsandcats · 13/06/2008 21:32

Secret handshakes and codes? Like 8 year old boys the lot of them.

nkf · 13/06/2008 21:37

My friend's fatehr was a mason and we once raided his wardrobe and found all this stuff. We were very young, teenagers.
And there was this secret masonic ritual book which said things like "candidates with extend their r...t h..d and so on." Top secret codes like that.

nkf · 13/06/2008 21:37

Sorry "candidates will..."

fryalot · 13/06/2008 21:42

oh leave him to play his games with his little friends.

Just look knowingly at him when he comes home, tell him to wash his own white gloves and get a posh frock for the ladies' night

diplodocus · 13/06/2008 21:46

I believe there's a strange embroidered apron involved...

lulumama · 13/06/2008 21:48

no, it is really quite serious, and they swear not to disclose anything. it is a big deal, leave him to it and google it all or get some books on it if you are desperate to know

my dad & BIL are big into the frilly aproness... my FIL was the grand master wizard years ago, or whatever it is called.

turquoise pinny and white gloves, anyone??

hifi · 13/06/2008 21:54

lol at apron.

OP posts:
fryalot · 13/06/2008 21:54

twas a very stiff apron, iirc

TequilaMockinBird · 13/06/2008 21:59

My Dad used to be the worshipful master .....whatever the heck that means!!!

The white gloves are very useful for putting on tights though - they are very smooth and make sure your rings/nails dont catch and ladder the tights!

TequilaMockinBird · 13/06/2008 22:00

Can I just clarify, I mean for you to put your tights on with.

I wasnt for one moment insinuating that freemasons wear tights
