Cried like a baby at hairdresser

I went to get my hair highlighted at the hairdresser.

Usually it's not a problem when I go to a new stylist, I'm not set on a certain style, just need the roots doing etc

I ended up walking out today because I just felt the stylist was being uncooperative.

I booked and paid online a few weeks ago.

I asked for highlights but not be as bright - she said it wasn't possible. She wS trying to say what I asked for wS balayage and so was inspiration picture (despite it saying highlights).

I ended up walking out and forgoing the money. Stylist isn't the owner whos been kind about everything (I just explained I would like some money back minus as material costs and staf costs).

I know I'm being emotional. I've had a terrible weekend and have no time of now for months :(

did you have an inspiration photo?
can you share it?

BudgetBuster · 19/01/2026 16:30

Did you not ask for the manager whilst there? Or for the opinion of another stylist?

Bitzee · 19/01/2026 16:31

How weird. Was there no suggestion to do baylage instead if that’s how would best achieve the look and then you pay the difference if there was one? It’s not like there’s a dramatic difference- presumably she’s just saying she’d do it freehand vs. with foils

So the other thing was she told me straight of I hadn't booked a toner so it would be extra.but it was a rude way.

She said she didn't have time to do it because the service is longer but it's cheaper and shorter on the website.

How odd. Toner isn’t going to be loads more so I would have said fine to that. Did you not query baylage being a shorter appointment time and cheaper on the website or did you only realise that afterwards? Maybe call the manager to discuss what happened?

ThejoyofNC · 19/01/2026 16:38

I'm going to be honest, this depends entirely on whether your expectations were realistic or not. Can you share the photos? I'm not fully understanding how you got to the stage of walking out crying?

TheDandyLion · 19/01/2026 16:53

Is paying in advance the done thing now?

One of the hairdressers in my town makes clients pay in advance. All booking is through an app.
The owner brought it in because too many people weren't turning up or cancelling at the last min And she was losing money.

She didn't have time to do what service?

It's really hard to know if YABU or not if you don't share the inspiration pic

Was she off with you from the start? Sounds like she just didnt want to do your appointment or was already grumpy.

EmeraldRoulette · 19/01/2026 17:23

@unicirn have you had a name change issue on this thread?

I'm really sorry you're feeling so rubbish 💐

With the highlights vs balyage I have had the same experience in that I took a picture to a hairdresser of something that was marked as highlights - and she said it wasn't.

A picture from the Internet is likely to be marked up inaccurately unless it's a specific instruction from a hairdresser or something.

I wasn't terribly confident that they knew what they were doing to be honest, but they are ladies who are known to me so I went to ask for advice before doing anything. They explained to me that what I wanted wasn't possible. And that was the fair thing to do.

But I hadn't spent any money. I know them from a local networking thing and I just went in to ask their opinion of what was realistic for me - my hair is extremely dark.

I'm not 100% clear exactly how her tone upset you, but it sounds as if you were very upset in the first place

I think paying before a service is quite problematic - a deposit is one thing but what exactly did you pay?

I'm sure this can be resolved but I think you need to look after yourself and not dwell on it this evening - and sort it out tomorrow.

have a hug from me and I hope you have a better day tomorrow.

I’m confused! Has the OP changed names half way through? Who is posting the pictures? The OP?

Balayage is done with foils OP. I have balayage with foil. I’m not a hairdresser but pretty sure balayage is just how it’s applied?

BillieWiper · 19/01/2026 17:45

I'm not sure what happened. You showed an inspo picture and said I want this please? If it was a pic of highlights but blended to look more natural towards to root that's what balyage could be described as. It doesn't really matter the semantics? I'd just say can you do this or not?

All sounds a bit confusing. But I understand if you felt you couldn't trust her and she wasn't listening.

I don't know why she said it's not possible to do highlights less bright either?

I wouldn't have forgone the money though.

Knittedfrog · 19/01/2026 17:47

Blimey, now I’m even more confused. The posts from what I thought were the OP have been deleted!

TorroFerney · 19/01/2026 17:52

I don't think any of this is related to your hair op, I think you are really stressed/tired as you have said and this arguably quite mild exchange tipped you over the edge when on another day you wouldn't have bothered.

Frillysweetpea · 19/01/2026 17:56

Sounds like you were vulnerable and the stylist did not have great interpersonal skills. Personally, I wouldn't go to a hairdresser who expected me to pay up front. Mine has a WL he can always fill at short notice because he's so good. Not that I use that as a reason to cancel on a regular basis, of course.

Solobanana · 19/01/2026 18:02

Ive had bayalage and I didn’t realise they also use foil. Bayalage is just how it’s applied- a softer more blended approach. Toner does cost more and does take more time- as they’ve got to wash hair then apply toner for a set time. If it’s not been booked in- then they can’t do it if other clients are booked in after you. But sorry you walked out crying.

BudgetBuster · 19/01/2026 18:06

The picture (now deleted), is balyage.
The root is darker and the "highlight" just blended to the bottom.

The difficulty with adding a less bright highlight to your hair (again pic deleted), is that yours wasn't a very bad root length, so you'd still have that bright brassy colour too. Obviously she could add it, but it wouldn't look anything like the picture you wanted.

Maybe her tone was off... maybe you're overly stressed and sensitive.
