To ask if there's a better straightener than GHD Platinum+, and if so what is it?

Was very happy with my GHD Platinum + straighteners - thought they were quick and produced good long-lasting results without too much sacrifice of shine and health. The only thing I didn't like was I was still left with the occasional 'bumpy bit' in my fairly curly hair, particularly at the back - but I think that's probably just due to me being hasty. If I straightened more thoroughly, pinning sections up in clips and working from the bottom of the hair to the top, I expect it wouldn't be the case.

However, I've unfortunately lost these great straighteners on holiday, and so I'm wondering whether to just replace them or try something else? The only one I've tried previously was the GHD original and I was much less happy with them than the platinum +, they made my hair pretty dry, thin and brittle looking.

Would anyone recommend anything as better than the GHD Platinum +? I've got quite tightly curly but also fairly fine hair. I'm open to trying anything, including more expensive options like an AirWrap. But one thing I do value about the GHDs is that the straightness tends to hold even in damp weather - important for me in an English climate, as I've got the type of hair that would quite easily frizz back up again. That makes me hesitant about an AirWrap, as from what I understand they don't make hair as smoothly straight as GHDs to begin with, so I'm guessing the straightness might not hold as well either. I've never tried Cloud 9s, though I know some people prefer them to GHD.

Hit me with your recommendations mumsnetters!

Just following as i want to know to

I used to use GHD (not sure what model though) but switched to Corioliss around 2018. Much better imo.

Hazlenuts2016 · 17/01/2026 21:17

I bought ghds for years. Then bought a much cheaper babyliss and never looked back.

Same here. One ceramic plate is very similar to another. I just replaced my babyliss ones with the wider version and they’re excellent too, as well as being about a quarter of the price

Cloud nine

I had ghd and didn’t rate them then went to Remington as a cheap temp pair and have never switched to any others! I have the rose gold ones and they’re fab in my opinion. I also curl with them and everything holds, they don’t snag my hair, have digital display and automatic shut off

I have fine wavy/curly hair. My workmate recommended cloud 9. Fab replacement for my ancient ghds

GingerMamaSheffield · 18/01/2026 06:41

Another vote for GHD Chronos

Milothebunny · 18/01/2026 06:50

Cloud 9 best straighteners I've ever owned.

MissedItByThisMuch · 18/01/2026 06:53

Another vote for Cloud 9. They’re also the brand my hairdresser uses.

Cloud 9, very decent hair straighteners (I used to use GHD and there is zero difference except the price) heat up fast, very quick to do my thick hair. However in terms of keeping your hair straight you may be better off popping something in your hair. I have to be at the swimming pool a lot and the humidity makes me hair puff up. Olaplex heat protecter does a decent job of keeping my hair straight.

Cloud 9's...... I'd been GHD fan for years. My first pair lasted 7 years then my second a year abd my third a year...moved to Cloud 9. Never looked back!

KimberleyClark · 18/01/2026 07:06

I’ve had my GHD Gold for 8 years, prior to that my GHD originals for 10 years. I’m very happy with the Golds, but may give Cloud 9s a go when they give up the ghost.

PeachyKoala · 18/01/2026 07:21

I had my original GHDs for years and tried replacing them a couple of years ago but the brand has changed and are not longer as good. The newer ones feel cheaply made and don't work as well.

I read somewhere that the original creator of GHD left the company and set up cloud nine so I asked for a pair for Christmas and they're great, on par with the quality of the original GHDs when they came out.

I also recommend Remington. They are
excellent. I got them as a temporary pair after my GHDs broke and they were only £20. I wouldn’t waste your money on anything else.

PotteryChuck · 18/01/2026 07:57

Since being a teenager I always used expensive straighters, GHDs etc, but on a trip a few years ago I forgot to pack them so I bought a cheap Remington pair from Argos.

They were better! Still going strong, now I see the expensive ones are a total scam.

I’ve always found cheap straighteners don’t work very well on my very thick, slightly coarse textured hair. I need heavy duty ones.

My hair is very similar - I was amazed how good the cheapo ones are. If you haven't tried a cheaper pair lately maybe the quality has improved? But appreciate we're all different!

I highly recommend an undercut too, really helps with managing super thick hair (and you'd never know!)

I was GHD all my straightening life and have switched recently to cloud 9 and my hair has never been in better condition. I bought pens with a curved edge and they have this vibration button to stop hairs being pulled and they’re soooo good. I have fine frizzy wavy hair. I can air dry it so I look like Monica from Friends and then use the straighteners and it stays smooth and silky for days. It’s also cut down how often I wash my hair. It is good at waving too although I’m not particularly good at that so still not mastered that skill. Plus I got sent a free few goodies with it one of which was a spray (half blue half clear bottle) which is amazing. Have ditched all other hat serums for this stuff.

AcidicTrifle · 18/01/2026 09:19

My old GHDs died and I tried replacing them with newer ones but they were crap. I switched over to Cloud 9 and never looked back:

PuppyMonkey · 18/01/2026 09:23

YABU and you need to just go on the Cloud Nine website and buy some of those.
