I just got pulled over for doing 32 in a 30

I’m shaking as I write this. I just drove out to walk the dogs and on my way back a police car pulled me over. I was doing 32 in a 30 and he said I was “lucky” that he’s not choosing to prosecute me over this.

AIBU or is this total overkill? It’s a dry sunny day, the roads are relatively quiet and I wasn’t driving erratically.

TLDR- The OP was pulled over for speeding.

He saw a lone woman and thought he'd put the shits up her. The Police are very good at that. His power trip probably gave him a hard on. Anyway, much easier box to tick than tackling the drug dealers and their snarling pit bulls in town.

Was going to say exactly the same thing. And I work in the criminal justice system. To say I'm cynical about the police is an understatement. I can say with almost certainty that he would not have stopped you for going two mph over the speed limit if you'd been male.

Dweetfidilove · 17/01/2026 14:16

jamandcustard · 17/01/2026 14:14

No, they can prosecute for 31 in a 30 if they want to.

Really 😲. I've always had the 10% rule in mind too, so will ensure I don't go over 29mph going forward.

BeverleyBrooks · 17/01/2026 14:16

I think I would have been shaken by being pulled over too. Probably overkill him pulling you over, maybe he was having a boring day.

I think most people who drive must have occasionally gone slightly over the speed limit without meaning to.

However judging by the idiots who drive right up my backside when I am driving to the speed limit and seem to be annoyed that I am not going faster, I guess there are a lot of drivers around who deliberately go over the limit too….

It’s 20 mph where I live which is difficult sometimes as the neighbouring borough is 30mph so you do have to pay close attention as to where it changes.
Also a lot of idiots seem to think that me driving at 20mph in a 20mph zone is some sort of nuisance, and will try to overtake me at any available opportunity (including going through red lights, driving into oncoming traffic, and driving the wrong way around a pedestrian crossing….) even though it’s highly likely I will be just behind them at the next lights. So it becomes quite stressful dealing with the other drivers. But I have never ever seen anyone pulled over for their terrible driving.

FixTheBone · 17/01/2026 14:16

Total lack of insight or contrition from OP. I suspect they thought you were going faster than 32 and only clocked you at that, then pulled you to teach you a lesson....

OP Admits they were over the limit...

Denies doing anything wrong....

What kind of mental gymnastics does it take to reconcile those two points?

You need to suck it up, admit you were wrong and try not to do it again... Seriously, some of the excuses make you sound seriously entitled, like you think the law doesn't apply.

randomchap · 17/01/2026 14:16

So you didn't even notice the police car behind you? Most people will rigidly stick to the speed limit if there's a copper behind them

Coulddowithanap · 17/01/2026 14:20

Can everyone honestly tell if the driver of the car in front is male or female? How would they have known until after op was pulled over?

WatalotIgot · 17/01/2026 14:20

If you have cruise control on your vehicle you could use it to keep to the speed limit. I agree it seems petty but limits are there for a reason. My daughter was hit by a car at 28mph and suffered a broken leg and hit her head on the road. If it had been going over 30mph she could have died or suffered a catastrophic head injury.

rhabarbarmarmelade · 17/01/2026 14:21

No sympathy whatsoever. Speed kills

It's not overkill, it's optics! How many other cars went past and slowed down as a result. Overkill may have been if he'd given her a ticket, but even that would have been perfectly legal.

rainforestalliance · 17/01/2026 14:21

My grandmother got a speeding fine for doing 31 in a 30!

Tbf we all creep a mile or 2 over the limit, I don’t believe anyone who says they never do.

MimiSunshine · 17/01/2026 14:21

MyLimeGuide · 17/01/2026 13:33

Maybe he has his own personal 'being a dick' targets to meet?

How about you have a think about what horrific scenes traffic officers see when dealing with a crash, often due to excessive speeding. Or when children have been hit by cars in 30 MPH zones.

now use that mental image to consider that they approach their job with the idea that if they can make more people aware of their driving and even their speed when going above the speed limit (even if not excessive) then they may just make that person more aware overall and would have less horrific car crash scenes to attend.

Piknik · 17/01/2026 13:48

I have been driving for 35 years and for most of my life London was 30mph minimum. 20mph feels un-naturally slow to me and my car. Most modern cars are not designed to drive at 20mph and it IS an effort to keep adjusting down.

But I am completely in control thanks. Sorry to burst your sanctimonious bubble.

If you can't keep your car at a given speed then you are not in control of it, despite any bullshit excuses about cars "not being designed to drive at 20mph".

This is just a fact. Nothing sanctimonious about that at all.

Of course you can. Especially if you were parked up first and she drove past you.

He’s not taking it further so how can it be overkill?

He stopped her for a difference of 2mph.
That's bs.
I wonder how many men he stopped for exceeding the speed limit by 2mph.
My guess is none.
It's a power play by a dickhead.
Anyone nitpicking like this should be in another job.

Yep, really. The 10% rule is just guidance that some forces choose to follow.

DH was on a speed awareness course a couple of years ago and there were people there who were going the same speed as OP. She's lucky she didn't get a fine!

NemesisInferior · 17/01/2026 14:24

1457bloom · 17/01/2026 13:53

There seem to be double standards, although maybe you are too immature to grasp my point. The police don’t seem to rigidly enforce speed limits on the motorway but they do in town. The messaging this sends is that the speed limit is flexible on the motorway but not in town which is confusing and opens them up to legal challenge.

Imagine using the phrase "Have the police got nothing better to do?" and then accusing someone else of being immature.

Anyone doing their job should be in another job? How does that work then?

OP is lucky she wasn't fined or given points/a course.

RaininSummer · 17/01/2026 14:25

It is annoying when here they seem to ignore the prats doing seventy in residential streets regularly.

This is how I feel. My town has a huge crime problem. But instead of spending time on that, they’re doing this.

Also, if his Speedo said 32, he must have been doing it too. So he was also just as in the wrong!

Crimes caused by common oicks in oicksville should be pursued but crimes committed by naice ladies walking their dogs should not?

You were speeding and failed to notice the police car behind you (so not paying attention). Most of us have been there, suck it up and watch your speed more carefully. I use the cruise controls to ensure I don’t go over the 20/30 limits because its so easy to do, especially if distracted by children or animals in the car. If he was on a power trip he would have given you the ticket.

Most of the injuries caused by speeding drivers are caused by urban drivers going over the 20/30 limits, not drug dealers speeding on motorways.

I tend to pay attention to the road ahead of me, which is what you’re taught to do.

I just think it’s a bit silly. About two miles away there’s a town full of drug addicts and drunks who make part of the town a no go area. But they’d rather pull over innocent people!

You aren't innocent. You drove without due care as didn't notice you had gone over the limit. Shaking over it is meant to get you sympathy but you just sound ridiculous.

ViciousCurrentBun · 17/01/2026 14:30

We all come across rules we don’t like or maybe disagree with. If there is a consequence to it being broken then we have to live with it. My MIL got a ticket, she was about 5 miles over the limit on a dual carriageway. Because she always thinks she is above mere mortals she wrote a letter, they still fined her and she had to do a course.
