I just got pulled over for doing 32 in a 30

I’m shaking as I write this. I just drove out to walk the dogs and on my way back a police car pulled me over. I was doing 32 in a 30 and he said I was “lucky” that he’s not choosing to prosecute me over this.

AIBU or is this total overkill? It’s a dry sunny day, the roads are relatively quiet and I wasn’t driving erratically.

OP posts:

People acting like they’ve never done 2mph over the speed limit by accident 🤣

I've done over the speed limit, and if I get caught doing so, that would be fair enough.

The limit is 30. OP was doing 32.

32< 30. There isn't an argument here. OP just can't accept responsibility for her own actions. All this nonsense about it "only" being 2mph or that "she only got pulled over because she was a woman" is just pointless noise.

What target is this officer achieving by giving words of advice to someone driving 2mph over the limit?

completely agree. Which bit of it’s a limit so you shouldn’t go over it is difficult for people to understand I wonder?

PickledMuffin · 17/01/2026 20:54

@GinagogoI know right! 🤣🤣🤣

Oldgoatinaboat · 17/01/2026 20:54

This is right up there with the list this week of things that didn't happen

Skybluefrog52 · 17/01/2026 20:54

@Wanttohelpbuthow Fine? Well then lets hope your loved one doesn't end up being knocked down by someone doing 2 miles over the speed limit, as clearly you think it's fine for someone to do that

Yogibearspicnic · 17/01/2026 20:55

On the face of it it seems a bit OTT from your perspective. Could well be a bored Policeman, but often they’ll pull you for something ‘minor’ when they want to check out something else though. It might be you/your car are similar to something he was looking out for. Once he saw and established all genuine and okay then let you carry on with the ‘warning’ as that was the permissable reason for stopping you. You only have to watch those police type programmes to see how stopping people for things that might seem petty can often lead to uncovering other things.

MidWayThruJanuary · 17/01/2026 20:56

Was the op watching her speedometer?
Or the road?

Purplebunnie · 17/01/2026 20:59

I got caught doing 33 in a 30 by a camera. I did the speed awareness test to reduce the fine and and the points. You were lucky

People acting like it's outrageous that a police officer should have a quick word with someone exceeding the speed limit, whether by accident or otherwise 🤣

There's no guarantee she was even speeding in the first place - her car indicated she was travelling at the upper limit.

Handheld devices are not 100% accurate which is why there's usually a 10% tolerance by police.

In this instance, two dicks in a car (sorry policemen), pulled her over and gave her a warning. They couldn't do anything else without it being challenged in court which I would do on principle when men behave badly.

When I went to court, it struck me that the five people ahead of me while I was waiting in the courtroom were all female "speeders" and all got off because of the tolerance rule.

Astonishing that no men, who are known to speed well above any tolerance level, were ahead of me on my day in court. Strange that.

Edited

OP has said her speedo said 32, that’s over the limit

Nobody said it was a hand held device, OP implied it was onboard the police car.

Op said he, implying one police officer, not two.

Analysis based on the sex of 5 or 6 defendants when you went to court is hardly sound.

Oh, of course, all men speed – dear heavens…..

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 17/01/2026 21:08

I can still remember getting a right telling off from a copper who pulled alongside me twenty odd years ago, gestured for me to put my window down and then shouted at me for ‘dabbing my brakes’. I felt like a right idiot and it does make you feel a bit like a child. He was right of course, I was quite young and was driving too close to the car infront, hence needing to dab my brakes.

i agree with your sentiment and yet he was essentially correct, you were going two miles over. Best plan is always to be polite and grateful for the advice and be in your way with no fine.

Moonlightfrog · 17/01/2026 21:11

LaurieFairyCake · 17/01/2026 13:05

Do remember that your speed dial would have been showing 35+. It’s just the speed trap recorded you at 32.

This, you speedo would have been showing over 35 to record 32 on a speed camera/gun.

I have been caught a few times (and not got away with it). Luckily my car now tells me if I am 1mph over by beeping at me, it’s helped me a lot as I don’t always have my eyes glued to the speedo. There are also dash cams you can get fitted that have speed warnings on.

So it doesn't matter what the law is if you have science on your side ?

Over the speed limit is over the speed limit. If you think the limit is wrong you are free to argue it before the judge. As a person on my SAC came close to being made to do when they started explaining why speed limits are "a joke" to the instructors.

Its about being a pedant vs seeing the bigger picture.

The law isn't always logical.

The OP was 2 mph over the limit. That officer could have spent one hour on the beat instead.

Yes the speed limit is the law, but there are more important things that a police officer could use their time for.

A bigger risk is drunk or drug drivers. People on their phones. 40 mph drivers. The list is endless.

Its things like this that lose the police so much respect.

hattie43 · 17/01/2026 20:12

The police have better things to be doing than this . There should be a discretionary leeway

There was- she was spoken to and it wasn’t taken further

hopefullyme · 17/01/2026 21:25

You got pulled over and a warning. That’s what traffic policing should be. Don’t just wait until the person has the accident, have some times when drivers are warned.

For those maligning traffic police they deal with some harrowing cases. They aren’t there investigating rape and murder. Equally those police officers that do that aren’t at the scenes of horrific crashes, and comforting relatives on the carriageway. Occasionally they also die or have life changing injuries such as Adam Gibb and Paul Holroyd

Football agent who killed highways worker and paralysed another jailed for longer

Peter Morrison has his sentence increased by two years following the Solicitor General's action.

You think it took AN HOUR out of the police officer's day to have a quick word with the OP about watching her speed?

When I was a young, reckless Gaspery I was pulled over by a police officer and told to watch my speed. Including the time from when they noticed me riding a motorcycle like a twat being incautious regarding national speed limits, to pulling me over, to having a word, and to then drive off, was maybe 10 minutes at most.

Itsrainingloadshere · 17/01/2026 21:31

Wanttohelpbuthow · 17/01/2026 20:26

Oh my lord am I reading these responses correctly?! 😂 2 miles over the speed limit is not speeding or dangerous. No one keeps perfectly at 30 at all times. My god. You’re fine OP

I haven’t seen any responses on here saying that someone has never gone over the speed limit.

The OP has been stopped as she was speeding, was spoken to and hopefully will be more careful. She can argue till
blue in the face it’s ridiculous but any speed over 30mph is over the 30mph limit and I don’t see how that is so hard to grasp.

oh it’s only 2mph over or 3 over, or 5 over in a 50 mph area, or it’s ok it’s dry or daylight etc etc. There has to be a limit somewhere that can be enforced.

If you are in agreement for a police officer pulling someone over for being 2 mph over the limit then fair enough.

Personally I'd rather they spend their time doing something else.

Drink and drug drivers are often caught through speeding. OP is lucky she hadn't had a drink or spliff.

Traffic officers' 'beat' is the roads they police.

I'm surprised they've got time to pull someone for doing 2 mph over the limit. No officers available to deal with burglaries, robberies etc but happy to allocate resources to this?

32 is over the limit, that’s what speed cameras are for. A prosecution? Ridiculous! YANBU!

I must admit I'd quite like traffic police to spend a bit more time performing summary executions on those utter bell-ends who stick like glue to the middle lane of motorways regardless of traffic conditions. But I really can't object to them also taking 10 minutes every now and then to have a word with people who are breaking the speed limit.

i understand the sentiment but totally different officers. Traffic cops do the motorway stuff, local village will more likely be a neighbourhood officer or response officer.
when you see speed camera vans, they’re not usually police officers, usually civilians hired by police forces to do that job, so not ‘taking a cop’ off the streets.
Totally share your loathing of motorway middle lane hoggers though!

Traffic cops deal with traffic offences not burglaries 😂
