Has anyone ever had an injury from a c-section?

Posting in AIBU for traffic as I really need solidarity!

I have recently suffered an injury to my ureter during a csection and I feel really alone as it’s so rare. During the surgery as I was in labour babies head was low and my uterus was torn on delivery. During the repair my ureter seems to have been damaged, diagnosed due to back pain leading to a CT showing the kidney was swollen due to urine not being able to flow from it.

Because of this my kidney function was suffering and I have a temporary nephrostomy bag. I am not sure what the future looks like as no one knows what the damage is or what has caused it.

I feel so low and alone with this as I only see stories where a csection has been an amazing experience. Has anyone ever suffered this injury?

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I had similar but caused by endometriosis blocking the ureter and damaging the kidney. I too had a nephrostomy bag for a few weeks until I had surgery to reroute and remove the damaged part of ureter. I can report that 20 years on I am completely fine. My kidney damage did not recover but as it was only one kidney it has not mattered.

Big hugs and hope it gets fixed soon.

Thank you the nephrostomy bag is not so bad, the thought of it was worse than it is. The most annoying thing is not being able to take a bath and the worry of infection, and waiting in for the nurse to change my dressing! My kidney function actually returned to normal as soon as they put the tube in so I’m hoping there’s no lasting damage.

I know you found my message on another post OP but for anyone finding this retrospectively, this happened to me too during my c-section. My ureter was stented and eventually everything healed and all has returned to normal.
Obstetrics maintained that it couldn’t possibly have been an injury from the c-section but urology said there was no other way it could have happened.
No mention of it on my notes etc.
Baby was born in poor condition needing resuscitation and ventilation so I’ve always just put it down to there being too much going on, but it doesn’t make it ok.

Sending so much love & have everything crossed that you have a positive outcome too

Updating this thread a few months later to say that I still have the nephrostomy bag. I have a reconstructive surgery planned in a couple of months, where my bladder will be moved and my ureter put back in above the damaged part. It’s a big surgery with a long recovery with a catheter and stent. Not really the outcome I ever expected but I am trying to think positive that at least I have a treatment plan! I have been in some very bad places in the past few months.

Really hope you’re ok, OP. That sounds horrible to go through and so tough with a newborn. Wishing you all the best for your operation.

Poor you

So sorry you've had this to deal with OP. I do hope the surgery is a complete success and you can move on with life.
