If you buy ONE coffee... what's the max time you should spend there before it enters into 'taking the piss' territory?
1 hour? 2 hours? 3?!

Everyone knows that coffee and tea shops serve coffee and tea above boiling point. Usually the temperature of the sun

45-60 minutes per drink.

hohahagogo · 14/01/2026 20:03

Hour tops, 45 minutes is definitely fine but do be sensitive to how busy it is. when we didn’t have broadband McDonald’s were fine with me sitting there for 3 hours in the morning because nobody else needed the table, I did ask and buy food and a coffee initially, manager brought me another coffee complimentary most days, he generally was sat on next table doing paperwork on his laptop, dead inside though drive through had customers, i disappeared before lunchtime kicked in

2hrs for one drink is fine! Those hot milky drinks are expensive and also impossible to drink quickly - I need at least an hour for a large latte or similar, especially it needs at least 20 mins to cool down to sippable temp and at £4-5 a drink I’m not going to rush!

People go in to coffee shops to work / study and can sit there for hours at a time. The staff reserve the right to say ‘we need this table for other customers now’ after you’ve finished your beverage / snack but they rarely do tbh unless it’s one of the super busy branches.

ilovepixie · 14/01/2026 20:13

I have never had a hot coffee shop coffee! It’s always just warm and I could drink it in one go!

That doesn’t even give time to finish a coffee unless you’re a speed drinker or have disgusting milky beverages that are already half cold.

i’d say an hour per coffee is reasonable.

So you like your coffee cold? Or at least like warm?

Pineapplewaves · 14/01/2026 20:15

One hour but only if it’s quiet and there are plenty of tables for other people. If it’s busy and people are looking for tables you should leave after you finish your coffee - I would feel guilty, sitting at a table with an empty cup while other people have nowhere to sit.

LlynTegid · 14/01/2026 20:16

I think no more than one hour per coffee or other drink.

How cold do you like your drinks? I ask for extra hot and still drink it within 5-10 minutes.

I regularly spend a couple of hours in Costa or Starbucks when I'm working. Only ever buy one drink and a sandwich.

canuckup · 14/01/2026 20:58

Max one hour
