Ridiculously indulgent things you have recently done for your children that you would only do for them?

Stood at bus stop for 40 mins in rain and howling wind to wait for DD 13 to get off bus as she had forgotten to take her hood attachment to school. The bus stop is maybe 200 metres from our front door.

Arrived at B&Q at 7am in order to get a heated blanket for DS 16, a journey of 8 miles out of my way to work because he casually remarked that he occasionally felt chilly in his bedroom at night and it was going to be the only opportunity of getting to buy before work.

What have you done recently that you accept it indulgent and would only ever do for your children?!

I sometimes drive to my kids school closer to lunchtime to drop off the lunch so that it’s freshly cooked and warm.

TheRealLillyAllenVerifiedAccount · 13/01/2026 17:54

We dont drive so I have ended up doing all sorts of ridiculous favours to get a lift somewhere for her. Including going camping. I hate camping.

Paying £45 to get her to and from a FREE ice skating event.

Seeing Baby Lasagna in concert.

It was actually great fun and I'm glad we went.

Not me but DH:

Teenage DD and her friends were home from Uni and decided they wanted to go to a club in our nearest city (we are in a relatively rural small town). Knowing that public transport options are limited, DH offered to arrange to collect them at the end of the night but DD told him in no uncertain terms that they were all ADULTS who do this sort of thing ALL THE TIME. They would get the last train home or call an Uber and absolutely did not want Daddy coming out to pick them up like toddlers. They had everything organised and we should just KEEP OUT OF IT. Rather predictably, they had not check the train times so were unaware that they last train on a Saturday we before 11pm, and hadn't realised that Uber drivers would not want to drive to the middle of nowhere in the early hours of the morning. DH did not say 'I told you so' when she called for help, but just directed them to the nearest 24 hour McDonalds where they could wait until he arrived. He didn't bat an eyelid when one of them needed to stop at the side of the road 'for some air' (= to vomit) and has never mentioned to any of them the content of the discussions in the back seat when they were seemingly all too pissed to remember that he was a parent and not a taxi driver.

I love that he is so discreet. Or is he just storing it away for future use...? 🤣

Took a £100 round trip to Aberdeen to move DDs car to avoid her having a £30 fine…

But why? If you didnt want her to pay the fine, you could have just sent her £30?

Or was it about seeing her too in which case I get that.

Hayfield123 · 13/01/2026 18:06

Lent one of my children my car. Theres had broken down and walked myself.

I think it was when PS3 came out ready for Xmas 2013. They were in such short supply in the run up to Xmas. There was a rumour that our local Asda were having a delivery of them & were going to open at 5am. I queued from 4am & managed to get one.

Actually the top one would be sitting through hours and hours of other people's children doing beginner ballet and interpretative dance in order to see my son do his 2 minute dance within a 3 hour show....

Oh god yes! For about 6 years my daughter did drama club and we had to sit through some right dross. There were different classes for different ages and they'd do a big gala thing every few months.

Watching the younger kids was boring but fine but when we got to the older kids it was awful. I remember one show where one of the lead actors was probably about 17 and he was so full of himself and thought he was hilarious (he was not). We had to be polite and titter at the appropriate times and I felt like I was encouraging this awfullness!

To make matters worse, they would suck us dry! You'd pay for the classes, then they'd "suggest" you wore the club t-shirts and you'd have to pay for the tickets for the shows obviously. They'd practically search your bag on the way in so you'd have to get a drink from them. Then they'd also waggle lottery tickets at you constantly. I refused to buy the lottery tickets but couldnt avoid the other stuff.

She does something else now. It involves a 1hr walk at 8am on Saturday mornings. After that she buggers off with her friends while I walk 1hr back home.

Soashamed60 · 13/01/2026 18:24

@Netcurtainnelly why don't start your own thread asking what nice things our kids have done for us?

Today I sieved the Rice Krispies to get rid of the flour / powder that always falls to the bottom of the bag, preventing my DC from finishing the packet. 🙄

I do that with my cereal. No sawdust for me 🤣

remotefly · 13/01/2026 19:03

Did at least 14 hours of driving practice with ds every week for 3 months so he could get to his dream job. I cried when he passed. Never, ever will I sit with a learner driver again.

Oh my god my mum used to do this for me cos I hated how it would go all mushy in the milk. ♥️

TimeForTeaAndG · 13/01/2026 19:09

DH and I take turns getting up at 6am on a Saturday to take DD to her skating practice. I barely get out of bed in time to get dressed for work normally but 6am alarm and I'm like ok, up, kettle on 😆

Arraminta · 13/01/2026 19:13

Got out of bed and drove 2.5hrs through the night to comfort DD2 when her long term boyfriend broke up with her.

Last year, spent nearly £1K on vet bills for DD1's bunny. Even the vet said it wasn't really worth it but she was distraught, so.......(bunny still alive and well).

Helped DD1 move out of her student house on the hottest day of 2024. Her room was in the attic and up 4 flights of stairs. I don't think I've ever fully recovered?

I genuinely don't think there's anything I wouldn't do for them.

Arraminta · 13/01/2026 19:30

Oh just remembered the latest indulgence. On her way back from the airport at Xmas DD2 messaged ahead saying she was full of cold and did I have any Lemsip max strength cold & flu tablets. I only had regular paracetamol, so obviously I drove to our local supermarket to get her some.

I also put together a little care package of vitamin c supplements, large carton of fresh orange juice, chocolate and her favourite tea bags. I also had a hot bath ready for her and a hot water bottle tucked into her bed.

Actually whenever our DDs come home, I always leave a chocolate bar on their pillow.

Dressed up in regency clothing at a stately home. DD(8) adores getting dressed up but was too self conscious to do it by herself, so DH and I joined in. DH loved poncing about pretending to be lord of the manor but I was cringing internally the whole time, it's just not my thing. The beaming smile on DD's face made it totally worth it though!

Disagree with the "builds resilience" posters. It's perfectly possible to make sure your children are prepared for the harsh realities of life whilst remaining a soft, cushioning place of love and indulgence for them. And no one is martyring themselves, I make sure I get plenty of love and indulgence too (including from DD!).

I love this! ❤️❤️

AhBiscuits · 13/01/2026 19:43

DH's parents will do anything for him. When he was a young adult his dad would wait up as late as necessary to go and pick him up after a night out. It could be 3am. They once did a 7 hour round trip to bring him his spare car keys because he had lost his.
My parents would have told me to get fucked 😄

6??? I can’t even fathom letting a 6 year old walk to her friends home alone. And not would I have been allowed to and I’m a child of the 80s!

Presumably, they were walking with the other child’s mother…..

Sorry, didn’t read the full thread!! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Also done this - spent hours and many unsuccessful orders and wasted money trying to find tiny Elsa dolls to fit into an Elsa castle she’d had a few years prior that was since discontinued

I'm glad I'm not the only one, these are magic mixies shimmerverse....little tiny gremlin-esque type things. I know most of their names at this point. Between that and the 4yos monster trucks my brain is choka full of useless info.

Danikm151 · 13/01/2026 21:00

Another one.
Birmingham did a bulls in the city trail over the summer. I thought we’d stretch it over the summer to find all 128.
week 1 -108/128 found as he had so much fun and asked each day to find more- all walking or getting the bus. Then there were some he asked to go back and see. I was exhausted!

Rushed out to pets at home on Christmas Eve a few years ago to get the cat a present from Santa because small child confidently announced that Santa would be visiting the cat too and it had never occurred to me....! (Had got cat a present from us but child had helped me choose it so couldn't use that). Not sure if that makes me an indulgent parent or indulgent pet owner or both....

A few years ago our autistic girl decided that her fave cat at her nanas, must have a “flippy fish” - a battery operated creepy af flipping fish, on Christmas Eve, at 3pm.
We got the bastard flippy fish. The cat didn’t like it. 😂

BePinkOrca · 13/01/2026 21:09

I love this thread 💖 I always do things for my kids they are old enough and capable enough to do themselves and get comments about it. At the weekend I de-iced and heated daughters car for her so she could go to work in a warm clear car..
I always do the drinks bottles for work/school
i will always try do small kind things to make life easier for them. I try to be the mum I wanted/needed.

Londonrach1 · 13/01/2026 21:13

I'm such a bad mum I do nothing special for dd that I know.
